Extractions: BOB THOMASON "Blending the past and the present through his art" Bob Thomason credits his growing up in Oklahoma, once known as Indian Territory, and his Cherokee heritage (NGED), as major inspirations to his preserving the folklore and history of America through his paintings. From the Native American and wildlife subjects, Cowboys and Mountain Men, through one-man exhibits and gallery shows across the country, as well as International exhibits, Bob continues to capture the rare qualities of this country's rich heritage in such a way as to draw growing public acclaim. Sensitivity would best describe the essence of Bob's work. The desire to express his inner feelings and emotions of his work and imagination through his art has not dimmed but intensified with each plateau Bob raises his art. The canvas has become his looking glass into this country's human experience. "The figure is the focus of most of my work. Although my paintings are primarily rooted in the past, in history and telling the story of people, places, and the character of the land, I'm always in search of new subjects and enjoy bridging the gap of time from our country's formative years to include current day subject matter. Balancing my work between the past and present makes me realize that the same human spirit of another time is still alive today." Bob approaches his subject and actual painting with the confidence of a God-given talent and an intense appetite for learning. "I believe I will always be an artist-in-progress, trying to raise my art to the next higher level, with self-imposed demands for excellence that, at times, seem unattainable. I never feel completely comfortable when I begin a painting. There's nothing easy about it, but I love having experienced the creative process and, hopefully, by this experience, I've gained some insight for the creation of my next painting."

Extractions: Modal Strains of a "Mountain Romance" by Jill Adams-Lacey A Mountain Romance , the latest recording (1994) of Bob and Melody Thomason, is an apt title. It's a simple blending of the many talents of this north Georgia mountain music couple. Their music is central to their marriage. Both of them sing, and Bob accompanies them on his self-made lap dulcimers, as well as frailed banjo and guitar. The arrangements they deliver are worth archiving for posterity's sake, but the Thomasons are not doing it for posterity. They're doing it for now. The singing comes straight from the hills, without apology. Folk hymns share a mixed repertoire with early country ("Railway to Heaven"), Stephen Foster classics ("Hard Times, Come Again No More") and mountain masterpieces ("Shady Grove" - played at near warp speed on the banjo). "'Folk music,'" Melody opines, "is such a big term." She shakes her head slowly and smilingly puts aside any analysis of what they're up to. When all is said and done, it's simple enough. "I love old hymns, and I just love to harmonize!"

Nationally we were 24th out of 161 colleges for Round 1. Full-time Faculty Hiring : The proposed hiring guidelines would require a distinct hiring committee for each position. Math has 8 new positions. The Dean would divide the applications with each committee receiving one-eighth of the applications. The task force was extremely displeased and will send the Faculty Senate a letter about the proposed process. Concerns were raised about the issues of quality, fairness, workload, legality, and balancing the department. COMAP International Modeling: Allison Sutton announced that while we had entered a team in the COMAP competition they were unable to work on a problem due to class workloads. We'll try again next year.

Extractions: Like many of his colleagues, Bob Thomason hated to waste energy on trivial matters, like fashion. He made the decision early in life to dress only in black clothing, thus simplifying that portion of his life. With his pointed goatee, he looked like a beat poet to outsiders, but mathematicians knew him as one of the greatest talents of his generation. Few have had the simultaneous grasp of topology, algebraic geometry and $K$-theory that Thomason did.
