    Extractions: John Wallis 's father was the Reverend John Wallis who had become a minister in Ashford in 1602. He was a highly respected man known widely in the area. The Reverend Wallis married Joanna Chapman, who was his second wife, in 1612 and John was the third of their five children. When young John was about six years old his father died. John went to school in Ashford but an outbreak of the plague in the area led to his mother to decide that it would be best for him to move away. He went to James Movat's grammar school in Tenterden, Kent, in 1625 where he first showed his great potential as a scholar. Writing in his autobiography, Wallis comments [28]:- It was always my affection, even from a child, not only to learn by rote, but to know the grounds or reasons of what I learnt; to inform my judgement as well as to furnish my memory. In 1630, still only 13 years of age, he considered himself ready for university [28]:-

He was a prodigy and at a young age could calculate numbers in his head with remarkable speed and accuracy. During the English civil war he was a successful and valuable cryptographer for his army. He deciphered enemy codes and encrypted messages for his own army. Later he became a minister and bishop of the church, before being appointed the Savilian professor of geometry at Oxford. In 1655 he published Arithmetica infinitorum , a major work in the development of calculus His work on the conics, Tractatus de sectionibis conicis , was published in 1656 and was the first to generalize conics as curves of the second degree. Wallis's work Algebra: History and Practice was the first to graphically display complex roots of quadratic equations. Wallis, 1810. pp. 52-54 BATHING, that salutary and pleasant custom, that chief avowed reason for which such numbers every year quit the towns, and crowd to the coast of our island, and so important an article to the invalid, is, at Sidmouth, both commodious and reasonable. Eight machines, which are conveniently placed a little to the westward of the town, are constantly ready: the terms are, one shilling for each gentlemen the first time, and sixpence for every time afterwards. Ladies one shilling and sixpence the first time, and one shilling after. WARM SEA BATHS, fitted up in an extremely convenient and comfortable stile [sic], have been established both by Mr. Hodge, and Messrs. Stocker. and Longmore; they embrace every mode of bathing. The former having been exclusively used by their Royal Highnesses the (late) Duke and Duchess of Kent and suite, are best known as the Royal Baths .—The New Baths are charmingly situated in the centre of York Terrace. To assist these means of preserving and restoring health, there is a resident Physician, Dr. James Matthews, with four or five Surgeons and Apothecaries.

    Extractions: march 29, 2003 i just was im-ing malcolm in sydney and was struck with the realization there is most likely someone on every continent praying for sydney, our new children and me and the 8 here. wow, now if thats not the church i dont know what is. this has been a crazy week. sydney has had a wild ride trying to navigate the fog that surrounds everything in ethiopia, who to trust who to stay away from. i have another interview tuesday, i pray that goes well. i also had a inquiry about pastoring a small multi-racial church in cincinnati and also have been mentioned to help be part of a vision team to plant a church in the community around the university of cincinnati. when i was talking with jason, wednesday he said dont worry about what the situation looks like, just try and figure out if its where God is leading you. i have stopped trying to ponder everything so much and just need to follow more. it sounds easy but its not.
