   Extractions: The prize is awarded by the University of Oxford since 1911 every 2-3 years for outstanding contributions to Biometric Science. The prize is given without regard to nationality or membership of any university. Weldon was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1890. In this year he succeeded Professor Sir E. Ray Lankester as Jodrell professor of zoology at University College, London. His tenure of the Jodrell chair (1891-99) was a period of intense activity. A brilliant lecturer and endowed with the power of exciting enthusiasm, Weldon soon attracted a large class, and his association with Professor Karl Pearson led to increased energy in the special line of research which he had initiated. In 1894 Weldon became the secretary of a committee of the Royal Society for conducting statistical inquiries into the measurable characteristics of plants and animals. In 1894, Weldon stated that "the questions raised by the Darwinian hypothesis are purely statistical, and the statistical method is the only one at present obvious by which that hypothesis can be experimentally checked." In 1899 Weldon was elected to the Linacre professorship of comparative anatomy at Oxford. Though the Oxford life afforded opportunities for greater intellectual leisure, Weldon disdained to make use of them. He had on hand numerous exacting projects and he tried to deal with them all at once. His leisure hours at Oxford were spent in long bicycle rides, during which he studied the fauna of the neighbourhood. His vacations were spent in journeys to various parts of the continent, where he worked at his statistical calculations and collected material for fresh lines of research.

After graduating he went to Naples working at the Zoological Station. He undertook research June to January, teaching at Cambridge for two terms each year. His teaching was described in these glowing terms:- Seldom is it given to a man to teach as Weldon taught. He lectured almost as one inspired. His extreme earnestness was only equalled by his lucidity. He awoke enthusiasm even in the dullest, and had the divine gift of compelling interest.

At Cambridge, Weldon came under the influence of Francis Balfour and abandoned medical studies for zoology.

During intermission we were entertained by Joe Bedus who played harmonica and accordianfirst time entertaining a crown and doing a greatjob. Also playing during intermission were Ray Crouch, Carol McGinley, Rod Macomber and Jim Hackettas usual doing a super job. Thanks to all.

    Extractions: ACTIVITY REPORT FFRC hosted the Final Research Coordination Meeting 10-14 July 2001. The meeting was attended by participating members from Vienna, Greece, Italy, USA, Philippines and Argentina, and invited Australian observers from ANSTO, NSW Ag, SA Primary Industries, MIA Fruit Fly Committee as well as Dr Max Scott from New Zealand. FFRC presentations were given by Alfie Meats, Stuart Gilchrist, Cindy An, JingTing Zhao and Deborah Shearman. FFRC thanks the Dean (Professor Beryl Hesketh) and the Head of School (A/Professor Roz Hinde) for financial support for this meeting. This contract was awarded to FFRC in July 1999 with the work subcontracted to Glenn Graham at the University of Queensland. Glenn advised on 17 October 2000 that he had been involved in considerable negotiations with various government and non-government agencies, and had not finished the work. Deb Shearman agreed to undertake the work needed to complete the contract using contract money sent to UoQ and not yet used. The final report was sent to AQIS in August 2001 The NSW, Vic, SA and WA State Departments of Agriculture through PIRSA contracted the FFRC to analyse fruit fly outbreak data held by these states to determine whether the existing suspension zones for Med-fly and Q-fly were valid. Drs Alfie Meats, Alan Clift and Merryl Robson undertook this work. A draft report was presented to a workshop organised by FFRC on campus in October 2000. The final report was presented to the Plant Health Committee for ratification in June 2001. The findings will be used by AQIS for discussions with Australia's horticultural trading partners to reduce suspension zones.
