"Melbourne actually provides great fodder for characters," he says. "I think it's one of my all-time favourite cities. It's full of the most amazing characters, especially the city, this square mile here. And some of the characters I encounter on a day-to-day basis just walking down Swanston Street, you know, if you put them up on stage people would say you're over-acting." On the stage a ball of intense, frustrated energy, off stage by the banks of the Yarra, Wenham is calm and easy-going. He's been kept up beyond his bedtime by the noise of post-Logies revelry, but he resisted the urge to party, keeping his focus tightly on the play.

Garden help and stablehand at 13, joined Brunnings Nursery and attended night-school to qualify as a state schoolteacher, taught at Tatura and Murungi, farming editor "Shepparton News" for some years, founded the "Euroa Advertiser" 1885, bought land (Milvina) in the first irrigation settlement in Victoria 1886, supplying vine cuttings for Chaffey Bros and propagating peach, pear and apricot stock for Ardmona, studied irrigation in California for the Australian government 1890, trained horticulturalists at Milvina till 1903, staff of the "Argus" 1903-retirement, farmer at Toolern Vale after retirement. In terms of speed, accuracy, and ruthlessness, there was probably no one better. He led a life of hatred, murder, and constant fear of being captured. Throughout his 7 years of gunfighting, he is attributed with at least 41 killings. The first 31 killings did not concern most people because the kind of people that had been killed may have had it coming to them. That all changed when former Texas Ranger Charlie Webb was gunned down. He was born John Wesley Hardin on May 26, 1853 at Bonham, Texas, the son of a Methodist minister. His father named him for the founder of Methodism, John Wesley. There were big plans in store for Wes, none of which came about. Wes, who may have been pathologically racist, cut down his first man at the age of 15. In a burst of rage over an incident, Hardin shot a former slave 5 times. In Washington County, Texas, he also shot the 3 Union soldiers who pursued him. Young Hardin was quite skilled with a six gun by this time, and troubles followed. In that time, anyone who killed Union soldiers and slaves was revered in Texas. He soon had a following of loyal supporters. By the time he was 17, he had killed at least a dozen men. To escape the heat, he joined a cattle drive to Kansas. This is when his true reputation began.

When fur companies brought supplies by wagon to trappers at their annual rendezvous, it demonstrated dramatically that wheels could make it across the rugged slopes. The attraction of the West was played with increasing intensity across the pages of eastern newspapers reporting the adventures of mountaineers and explorers. The West became an image of wide open spaces, where land was free for the taking, and a person's troubles could be left behind. The first wagon teams gathered at the Kansas River in May of 1841. They were nervous about the journey before them. One headstrong, rather overbearing individual, John Bartleson, insisted on being elected captain and threatened to pull out of the enterprise if he were ignored. It was obvious that "Captain" Bartleson knew little more about Plains travel than the next man, but the immigrants obliged him anyway.
