Moore and some other students influenced by him, and we give some information about them, in the belief that a teacher is best known by means of the activities and accomplishments of his students. Hallett did not enter academia; instead, he had a long career in public service, beginning with a post as Secretary of the Proportional Representation League. In 1937 he wrote Proportional Representation: The Key to Democracy . He taught courses in government at several colleges in New York City: Brooklyn, Hunter, NYU, and CCNY. He was given special awards from LaGuardia Memorial Association (1963), New York City Club (1964), and Citizens Union (1947, 1969). During the Second World War he was active in the Committee for Civilian Defense.In his book Creative Teaching: The Heritage of R.L. Moore, D. R.Traylor quotes Hallett as saying, ".. I think such success as I've had in the field of government probably has a good deal to do with that [ Moore's teaching] - because they don't catch me up very often in theories of logic in bills, or different parts of bills, that don't hang together." 3.     Extractions: Posted March 6, 2000. AtlasImage version Jones was born in Cisco, Texas, on November 22, 1910. His father, a pharmacist, was also a local politician, serving in various positions in Shackelford County, Texas. As a result, Jones was thrown into contact with lots of lawyers during his teens and first aspired to be one himself. Since he was valedictorian of his high school class, he qualified for a Regents' Scholarship to the University of Texas, where he started the pre-law program. Jones soon discovered a problem; he had a poor memory, especially for dates and history. He switched his major to chemistry, but he took math courses, more than just those necessary for a science major. In the beginning calculus course, Jones came under the influence of R. L. Moore. When Jones graduated in chemistry in 1932, Moore offered him a part time job as a math instructor. Jobs were scarce, and Jones accepted the offer. He received his doctorate in mathematics from the University of Texas in 1935. Jones was a member of the faculty at the University of Texas from 1935 until 1950, except for the years of World War II. During those years (1942-44), he was a Research Associate at the Harvard Underwater Sound Laboratory. There he was part of a six-man team that developed scanning sonar for the Navy.

    Extractions: VALE MARION WINN Marion Winn died at the end of June and the "Service of Thanksgiving to God" for her life was held at the War Veterans' Chapel, Collaroy Plateau, NSW, on August 12. The service, not mournful, but one of joy and deep faith, was conducted by the Rev. Geoff Parish. Marion's photograph faced us - showing her in WAAAF uniform, with the navy cap upon her fair hair - that young Marion remembered by so many Cbers as Marion Manson. Her sons were there, and her family had gathered. Jill Ritson, her niece, gave the first reading, and talked of her much admired "Auntie Marion" who was so kind to children, who would always respond to the words "God Bless You" with "He has". There were hymns. Joy Grainger, Cber, played the organ. Don Robinson, Cber, and former Anglican Archbishop of Sydney, gave the second reading. Then he spoke of his long friendship with the Winns, of how he first met Stan before the war. Stan Winn gave the eulogy. He'd come back from service in the Middle East, in Greece, Palestine and Syria to find himself in Adelaide. There he noticed a strange thing, People in Intelligence started to disappear. Where were they going? Soon he was involved in this mystery, and was sent to Melbourne, to an organisation called Central Bureau. General MacArthur's chief signals officer, Brigadier-General Spencer Akin was there, as were people of many services. Stan Winn found the number of women at CB quite terrifying. In the Middle East Army nursing sisters or VA's had been distantly glimpsed. But in Melbourne, said Stan, there were WAAAF, AWAS, American WACs.

    Extractions: The purpose of the University of Virginia Women's Club is to promote sociability among its members and to be of service to the University community. The University of Virginia Women's Club was founded in 1948 as The Faculty Wives Club of the University of Virginia. The name was changed on May 6, 1991 to The University of Virginia Women's Club to more accurately reflect the current membership which is no longer limited to faculty wives. In 1948, there were 24 founding members. A letter was sent to Faculty Wives of the University in February of 1948. The letter said that since the University had become so large and scattered, the time had come, they admitted somewhat belatedly, to form a club for faculty wives so that they would have an opportunity to know each other. Mrs. Colgate Darden, Jr. consented to act as Honorary President, if and when a club was formed. It was suggested that there be 5 meetings a year and NO PROGRAMS just tea and talk. The dues would be nominal. At this first meeting Robert's Rules of Order would be followed. The temporary chairman would ask for drafts of a proposed constitution and by-laws, and the nomination of officers for the year. It would not be a long meeting. It would be on Feb. 24, 1948 at Madison Hall at 3:30 p.m. There were 125 ladies who met on Feb. 24. An article in the paper stated that the Faculty Wives Club of the University of Virginia was formed and that it was a purely social group that would have 5 meetings a year. Ann Vaughan, Mrs. Joseph L. Vaughan was elected president.
