Extractions: The following are some of my publications and research papers. Currently I am working on geometry images and global conformal parameterization in the graphics field, and computational conformal geometry in the mathematics field with collaboration with Professor Shing-Tung Yau Xianfeng Gu, Shing-Tung Yau According to Klein's Erlangen program, different geometry branches study the invariants of a space under different transformation groups. For example, topology studies the topological invariants of a surface, which are the holomogy groups etc. The topological invariants can be computed from triangulated meshes. The Euclidean transformation keeps the induced metric from R^3 on the surface. The curvature, area, and angles can be computed. Between topological transformation group and isometric transformation group (Euclidean group is a subgroup of isometric group), there exists a conformal transformation group, which has not been used in computer graphics and vision before. We present a method to compute the conformal invariants under this group, and to verify if two surfaces can be transformed to each other by conformal maps. The proposed conformal geometry method has many applications including texture mapping, remeshing, geometric morphing in graphics, surface identification and classification in vision.

Giese Date: March 7, 1994, pp.22 Carl Storm, former chief scientist and program manager for technology development at Los Alamos National Laboratory's Explosives Technology and Application Division Office, has assumed the position of director of the Gordon Research Conferences. Storm, 59, succeeded Alexander Cruickshank, who had held the position since 1968. Storm began his new job on December 1. Founded in 1931, the Gordon Research Conferences is a Rhode Island-based organization that sponsors meetings exploring topics at the frontiers of chemistry, physics, and the biological sciences. Convened in New England, California, Hawaii, and Europe, the conferences attract approximately 15,000 scientists worldwide and are characterized by a casual, off-the-record environment. Attendance at the individual Gordon conferences is limited to small groups of 100 to 130 scientists (J. Seiken, The Scientist, April 29, 1991, page 19). Storm, himself a regular participant in past Gordon Research Conferences, says his first priority is to sustain "the traditional high quality of the conference. Ever since I took this job, people have communicated to me how much of an impact the conference has had on them."

Extractions: Shing-Tung Yau (Harvard University) Seven dimensional manifolds with holonomy group G2 are always Einstein manifolds. Examples of them are constructed by Bryant, Salamon, Joyce, Kovalev and others. Even though we expect to have a lot of them, a general existence theorem is still lacking. G2 geometry can be interpreted as oriented octonion geomery (Lee and Leung). It has natural classes of calibrated submanifolds (Harvey and Lawson) and Yang-Mills bundles (Donaldson and Thomas). In M-theory, G2 manifolds play an important role, similar to the role of Calabi-Yau threefolds in String theory. There are many duality transformations for them. In particular Calabi-Yau 3-folds with D-branes are equivalent to M-theory backgrounds with G2 holonomy (Atiyah, Maldacena, Vafa). In this context G2 flop can be used to explain Large N dualities. Mirror symmetry in the context of G2 is very interesting to study in the context of T-duality (Acharya, Gukov-Yau-Zaslow, Aganagic-Vafa).
