It is based on the introductory book The Study of Language ) by George Yule. We will look at selected chapters and additional materials on phonology, morphology, semantics, pragmatics, language history and variation. Students are expected to comply with the assignments. There will be a test at the end of the semester, which is part of the Zwischenprüfung . For all details, visit our introduction homepage Course SS 2002 HS Discourse Analysis Norrick / Bubel Do, 15-17 How do we know how to respond to "Can you pass me the salt?" How do we make sense of Inter Relay Chat interaction? How are misunderstandings in conversation cleared up? How do we know someone is only joking? All these questions can be answered by doing discourse analysis. This seminar starts off with a general overview of the field, followed by students working independently on discourse analysis research issues. Students are expected to report on their progress during consultancy sessions and in written form (2 page reading report, due at the end of June). Furthermore, to receive a "Hauptseminarschein" students are to hand in a 15-page term paper by the end of the semester.

    Extractions: Wednesdays 15-17 This course caters to future linguists, football nuts, and students who would like their listening comprehension to be put to the test. It will lead students through the different stages of a linguistic research project. We will set out by focussing on such linguistic theories as conversation analysis, interactional sociolinguistics, narratology, and ethnography. Next, we will see how spoken language can be transcribed into written form. Being thus fully equipped for linguistic research, students will then put their newly acquired knowledge to use: a number of recordings showing British football fans watching the World Cup 2002 will form the basis of our analyses. Their conversations in front of the television set are what I call the language of television viewing. All students will have a computer at their disposal. With the help of a programme designed for linguists, they will screen the different video files for passages they find striking. Interesting questions may include the interplay of the voices from the television set and the conversation going on between the football fans watching. Also, differences between “regular” conversations and ones which take place with the television on may be worth analyzing. Students interested in narratives will be able to look for passages in which the viewers start telling stories.

Yule's introduction to linguistics is certainly ambitious: no less than 21 sub-disciplines are presented in the space of 250 pages. Not only the "staples" of linguistics are covered, such as phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics, but also less well-known subjects such as sign language, and speech recognition systems. The breadth of coverage of Fromkin and Rodman's An Introduction to Language is also impressive, but that is almost twice the length of Yule's book. I am not aware of any introductory work of a comparable size to Yule's with a similar scope. This new edition claims that it "incorporates many changes that reflect developments in language study over the past decade." One of these developments has come in the field of animal language. The discovery that chimpanzees are capable of learning a symbolic language system purely by observing it in use, without explicitly being taught by humans, provides further evidence that some animals are indeed capable of learning "the barest rudiments of language", in opposition to Chomsky's belief. In the chapter on animal language, Yule pointedly takes certain scientists to task for their anthropocentrism, which one suspects has informed much discussion on this subject.
