Product Description
Although the science of acoustics is fundamental to the art of music, relatively few musicians understand the scientific properties of musical sound. The original purpose of Professor Backus's book was to collect and organize the scattered results of research, past and present, in the areas of scientific knowledge that are relevant to music: the physiological properties of sounds; the effect of acoustical environment; the acoustical behavior of musical instruments; and the various applications of electronics and computers to the production, reproduction, and composition of music. The aims and organization of the second edition remain the same; the results are more complete and up-to-date. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great introductory textbook for college students on acoustic
Dr. Backus is a professor of physics but also a pianist and has a deep appreciation of both the intricacies of physics and the relationship of physical phenomena to musical instruments. This is a superb text forcollege music majors or physics majors although the latter would bedisappointed by the lack of equations and obvious attempts to suit the bookto music majors. I am a semi professional musician and found that this textsatisfied much of my perpetual inquisitiveness about acustical instrumentsand how they work. ... Read more

Product Description
In volume one of his epic post-apocalyptic adventure saga, master storyteller John Phillip Backus brings this not-so-distant vision of the future to life with intriguing characters, gifted narrative, believable settings and mythic heroes and villains. Driven by a riveting storyline brilliantly illustrated by Asheville, NC artist, Chad Schoenauer, the author weaves his linguistic magic until the reader is utterly immersed in this brave new world and dare not fail to turn the next page for fear of missing out. On his own in the Wyoming wilderness, fourteen years after the End War and its aftermath nearly wiped out the human race, self-exiled survivor, Hunter Macintosh, is suddenly faced with more than he bargained for-three sisters and a child crossing the uncharted wilds alone. Suspicious at first, Hunter soon discovers they've traveled more than three hundred miles to find him, at the request of their father, Adam Planchet-Hunter's former commander and comrade-in-arms-whose besieged Colorado community is at risk of being overrun by lawless hordes! Honor-bound by a pledge made many years earlier, Hunter agrees to return with Elise Planchet to help turn the tide before all is lost. Set against the majestic backdrop of the North American Rockies, Hunter - After The Fall is an engrossing tale of adventure, betrayal and hope, where the true character of an individual is thoroughly tested and the outcome uncertain at best. Join Hunter and Elise as they battle bands of outlaws, enraged grizzlies, numbing blizzards, armed militias and their own stubborn hearts in an epic tale of good-versus-evil in a potential future all too easy to conceive!

5-0 out of 5 stars A different kind of post-apocalyptic adventure
First of all, I have to say that I am a HUGE fan of the post-apocalyptic genre.I devour every PA book, movie or game I can get my hands on.When I picked up the Kindle version of Hunter - After The Fall, I thought I knew what to expect; your average "man against the dregs of the post-nuclear wasteland" story. That preconception didn't stay with me very long.

Hunter is a hard book to pigeon hole.Is it a post-apocalyptic adventure? Yes.Does it rely on the same PA plot devices that most books of this genre do; not really.Actually, Hunter is more of a wilderness adventure book that just happens to be set in post-nuclear war America.Hunter is the kind of story that would have been just as compelling if it was set in the Alaskan wilderness of the mid 1850s, or on the American frontier during the westward expansion of the early 1800s.

Two things set Hunter - After The Fall apart from other books of this genre: deep character development and a rich, expansive world.

During the course of the story, I got to know Hunter Macintosh, Elise Planchet and the rest of the cast on a personal level.I understood their motivations; I actually cared what happened to them.Having read many stories in which I was actually relieved when a supporting character bit the dust, this was refreshing.

My favorite aspect of Hunter was the depth of the world that Backus has created. It's obvious that there is so much more happening just off screen than we get to read about in this book.I love reading a story that has references to things happening in other parts of the world, or with other people, or organizations. After reading Hunger, I can't wait to see what's happening on the Northwest coast, and find out who are The Old Ones.

I enthusiastically recommend Hunter - After The Fall to anybody who loves a well-crafted adventure story. This is a book that makes you wish for a rainy day, a roaring fire, and a comfortable sofa.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hunter has it all!
I was pulled into the story right from the start, it continues to evolve and makes you want more when you're finished.Bring on "The Gathering"!N. Guarino,

2-0 out of 5 stars For the young reader
This book seems to be written for a younger reader. There is a nice story line but it has no "grit".It plods along in a very predictable fashion and by the end of the book you just want it to be over.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great adventure!
Writer John Phillip Backus grabs you roughly by the arm and pulls you into this exciting story of the future world, where only the toughest (and the strangest) manage to survive.Whether it be the way a horse's lips twitch when it's hungry or the way an axe cleaves off a man's arm, this writer's special gift for description transports his readers into scenes of epic gorgeousness, intense and brutal action, or tender thoughtfulness, with ease.

The interesting and unexpected twists in the tale keep readers' fingers busy, turning pages. Also, the development of the romance between the male and female characters--based on respect and admiration for one another--is remarkably satisfying and a nice change! While the main characters are as ruggedly handsome or charmingly winsome and feisty as one mighty expect for this genre, all of the characters are well wrought. These are bad guys we can understand! You almost feel sorry for them as they get their just deserts (and boy, do they ever get their just deserts...).

But the most compelling aspect of the writing is the author's ability to infuse the adventure with the sensibilities of his main character, Hunter. He is a likeable, responsible hero who makes us hungry for the next book in this series!

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read! You will LOVE this book!
Hunter - After the Fall is destined to become an instant classic in the genre of post-apocalyptic science fiction. If you like post-apocalyptic sci-fi, you will LOVE Hunter! ... Read more
