A very interesting and informative read
In 1853, Reverend John Quincy Adams (1825-81, not to be confused with the sixth President of the United States) of the Baptist Church in Caldwell, New Jersey, delivered a series of lectures on the general principles that underlie the Baptist denomination. Shortly thereafter, these lectures were expanded and printed in book form. This book is generally recognized as the first of the great books on the distinctive Baptist beliefs. Unlike many other denominations, the Baptists do not have a formal creed, so theological writings like this one are important for defining what a Baptist is.

This book took the Baptist world by storm when it came out in 1853. Indeed, Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-92) was so impressed with it that he used it as a textbook in his Pastor's College, regarding it as, "the best Manual of Baptist principles he had met."

Overall, I found this to be a very interesting and informative read. Admittedly, as was the style of the day, it is a pugnacious work, and is likely to cause some offense to non-Baptist readers. But, that said, it is a great foundational work of Baptist thinking, and gives the reader a real understanding of where Baptists came from, and what they really believe. I highly recommend this book!
