1-0 out of 5 stars Longwinded...
First off, I am a physics major so i am quite familiar with Bohr and his fantastic acheivements!I read this book for a history of science and technology class and found it to be quite longwinded. The author goes into detail about events she has no knowledge of, for instance she says describes how Bohr looked at the water in the fountain of the Institute - there is no way she could know that(the only on being Bohr himself), just that he sat out by the water thinking about something. My other gripe with this book is the chronology - while generally sticking to the right order, several chapters moved forward a few years then back again. In once chapter the author talks about Bohr and his going to America to work on the Manhattan Project, at one point it's 1940 and he is in sweden, next page it's 1943 and Bohr and his son have gone to the USA, only to find two paragraphs down it's back t0 1941, Bohr writing a letter to a colleage about his proposed trip to the USA.Now this book does contain a lot of information on the man who turned the quantum world on it's head, but something better could be written...and doesn't a man of Bohr's stature deserve a good biography?

4-0 out of 5 stars Biography of Niels Bohr
This biography recalls the entire life of Niels Bohr, one of the preeminent scientists of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; the author even likens his influence to Aristotle's. Though focusing primarily on his scientific life, the book traces his life from his promising beginnings in Denmark until his death in 1962. Also included is the author's assertion that Bohr was nearly able to halt the nuclear Arms race that spawned the Cold War. Other notables that are mentioned in conjunction with Bohr include: James Franck, Lord Rutherford, Werner Heisenberg, Enrico Fermi, Sir John Cockcroft, Ernest Lawrence, and Adlai Stevenson. ... Excerpt: Alan John Percival Taylor, FBA (25 March 1906 7 September 1990) was a renowned English historian of the 20th century. Taylor was born in Birkdale, near Southport, of Scottish descent and was brought up in Lancashire. He was educated at various Quaker schools including Bootham School in York. As a student he was described by his headmasters to be brilliant and rebellious. Initially he had an interest in archaeology, and as a young man he was an amateur expert in the history and archaeology of churches in northern England. His interest in archaeology led to a strong interest in history. In 1924, he went to Oriel College, Oxford to study modern history. His wealthy parents held strongly left-wing views, which he inherited. His parents were both pacifists who vocally opposed World War I, and sent their son to Quaker schools as a way of protesting against the war. In the 1920s, Taylor's mother, Constance, was a member of the Comintern and one of his uncles a founding member of the Communist Party of Great Britain. Constance was a suffragette, feminist, and advocate of free love who practised her teachings via a string of extramarital affairs, most notably with Henry Sara, a communist who ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=140444 ... Life and career Bohr was born in Copenhagen in 1922, and grew up surrounded by physicists such as Wolfgang Pauli and Werner Heisenberg , who were working with his father at the Institute for Theoretical Physics (now the Niels Bohr Institute ) at the University of Copenhagen . In 1940, shortly after the German occupation of Denmark, Bohr began his physics degree at the University of Copenhagen. In October 1943, shortly before he was to be arrested by the German police, Niels Bohr escaped to Sweden with his family, later travelling to London and on to work on the Manhattan Project . During this time, Aage Bohr travelled with his father, acting as his assistant and secretary. The Bohrs returned to Denmark in 1945, and Aage returned to University, graduating with a master's degree in 1946, with a thesis concerned with some aspects of atomic stopping problems. Following graduation, he became an associate at the Niels Bohr Institute. Bohr worked at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton in early 1948, and later at Columbia University from January 1949 to August 1950. Excerpt: Tycho Brahe (14 December 1546 24 October 1601), born Tyge Ottesen Brahe (de Knudstrup), was a Danish nobleman known for his accurate and comprehensive astronomical and planetary observations. Coming from Scania, then part of Denmark, now part of modern-day Sweden, Tycho was well known in his lifetime as an astronomer and alchemist. His Danish name "Tyge Ottesen Brahe" is pronounced in Modern Standard Danish as . He adopted the Latinized name "Tycho Brahe" (usually pronounced or in English) from Tycho (sometimes written Tÿcho) at around age fifteen, and he is now generally referred to as "Tycho", as was common in Scandinavia in his time, rather than by his surname "Brahe". (The incorrect form of his name, Tycho de Brahe, appeared only much later.) Tycho Brahe was granted an estate on the island of Hven and the funding to build the Uraniborg, an early research institute, where he built large astronomical instruments and took many careful measurements. After disagreements with the new king in 1597, he was invited by the Bohemian king and Holy Roman emperor Rudolph II to Prague, where he became the official imperial astronomer. He built the new observatory at Benátky nad Jizerou. Here, from 1600 until his death in 1601, he was assisted by Johannes Kepler....More: http://booksllc.net/?id=30027 ... Read more

Read more
