Product Description
Robert Boyle (1627-91), one of the seminal figures in the origins of modern science, yet a complex and tortured personality, has been the subject of much scholarly attention in recent years. Here, Michael Hunter, the acknowledged expert on Boyle, makes use of much hitherto unpublished material to offer a novel and distinctive view of the man. Hunter's re-evaluation of Boyle focuses on an elucidation of his religious life, and particularly his concern with matters of conscience, which Boyle pursued with an obsessiveness that contemporaries characterised as `scrupulosity'. This arguably lay at the root of the convoluted intellectual personality revealed in many aspects of Boyle's ideas and activities. In addition, by studying works that Boyle wrote but never published, Hunter illustrates the extent to which he was constrained by his fear of being at odds with groups like the medical profession and with public opinion more generally. In these essays, Boyle emerges as a troubled figure, plagued by religious doubt, ambivalent about magic, and convoluted in his relations with the wider world. ... Read more

In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.

Product Description
The image of the 17th-century scientist Robert Boyle owes much to a series of evaluations of him written shortly after his death by men who had known him well, such as John Evelyn, Gilbert Burnet and Sir Peter Pett. These key early appraisals of Boyle by friends and contemporaries were selectively drawn on by Thomas Birch in his 1744 "Life of Boyle" and, through him, they have influenced all subsequent accounts of Boyle. Some of the most important of these documents - including texts by Burnet and Pett - have never been published. In this book, these unpublished and, in some cases, previously suppressed texts, provide a new and fuller image of Robert Boyle and allow a revaluation of his life and work. The book includes Boyle's own autobiographical sketch, "An Account of Philaretus during his Minority", amongst other early biographical texts, and also contains the hitherto unpublished surviving fragment of an ambitious early life of Boyle by William Wotton. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Boyle's Paper on Boyle's Law (PV=k). And other Gas and Liquid Related Papers Done by Others
The Christian Chemist, Robert Boyle's classical paper "A Defence of the Doctrine Touching the Spring and Weight of the
Air" (1660) , which is the main argument for the development of one half of the Ideal Gas Law (PV = k), is reproduced in this anthology. Here any reader will learn of the apparatus, methods, results and discussions by Boyle on on the relationships between pressures and volumes on gases like air. Boyle's paper is only 10 pages long, but it lays a foundation for the derivation for the Ideal Gas Law (PV = nRT). There is a longer work on this called "New Experiments Physico-Mechanical" but the paper found here is the most essential for the Ideal Gas Law.

The rest of the book is on E. H. Amagat and hist experiments and discussions on Marriotte's Law and the derivation of Boyle's Law, though he gives credit to Marriotte for the law. The compression of gases is his main focus on his first paper in the book. The empirical evidence in support of Mariotte's Law is discussed in detail and compression of air analysis is introduced along with apparatus' and procedures documented by E. H. Amagat. The final section is an empirical discussion on thermal expansion and elasticity of fluids at high temperatures.

Overall it is a great read. This book does not give the whole derivation of the Ideal Gas Law, but does show, implicitly, how temperature, volume, and pressure relate to each other in PV = nRT.

The book itself is a copied version of an older book, with the pages being gray. You can tell this book was virtually xeroxed, but it's still a great copy to have and to see how PV = k , where k is a constant, was derived by Boyle.
