5-0 out of 5 stars Read it from cover to cover.
This book is really beyond praise -- one of the most enjoyable and yet edifying books I have ever read. You can see clearly that the author has a real knowledge of the whole Spanish-speaking world, from Spain to Tierra del Fuego. (This is one reason why this book is considerably better than Keenan's book, which focuses on Mexican usage almost exclusively.) In addition to sound advice about False, Unreliable, and Good Friends, (words that appear similar in Spanish and English but whose meanings may or may not be the same) he has some absolutely fascinating tidbits of information: e.g., -barra- in music means the vertical bar-line; what we call a musical bar or measure is compás. Speaking of bars, I think he's had a few nights out with these -hispanohablantes-, and thus he understands the culture in a familiar and deeply amicable way. He has a fine sense of humor and insight. I read the book cover to cover and recommend the same without reservation.

5-0 out of 5 stars ?!Why aren't there more references like this!?
Tired of getting the wrong context due to routine translation? This gem is your answer. An incredibly useful companion for clarifying common usage and nuance, this book is actually fun to read because of its anecdotal format. The authors experience, insight and style are all a delight compared to typical fare in this category. It's a bargain at thrice the price! My only questions: Why hasn't there been an updated edition in many years and why isn't this book a part of every Spanish course

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
As a speaker of fluent Spanish, this book was invaluable in getting subtle nuances, learning false cognates and distinguishing between meanings from one country to another. It's a fun read as well. I have about 5 copies for my own references and to give away given how valuable and well-written it is.
What I don't understand is how a $7 paperback is going for $40 to $140 on the Internet! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Portable Identity: A Woman's Guide to Maintaining a Sense
Anyone ever to encounter and navigate the endless and exhaustive details involved with moving and living overseas will appreciate the meticulous care and thought that went into this primer. The exercises and for planning for and understanding the different stages, emotions and thought processes that accompany such a move are terrific, not just for the move itself, but for a very effective and smooth assimilation of this kind of life-changing experience.
I will be giving this one to many of my friends who are also contemplating living and working overseas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comments from a former expatriate wife
Like many other women who accompany their husbands overseas, I started to think I was going crazy! But, after attending a workshop facilitated by the authors, I realized what I was feeling was completely normal. By using the skills and exercises that Debra and Charise illustrate in their book, you can get back on your feet and transition into your new lifestyle overseas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Search Dog Training
This is one of the main books I used in training my own SAR Dogs. This is a wonderful book that they need to put back out in print so it is not so hard to find. If you are able to get this book you will treasure it for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for those entering SAR, with or without a K-9 partner
I first read this book in 1988, since then 5 copies have been permanently "borrowed." I would suggest this well-written book for anyone thinking of starting a young dog in SAR. Bryson gives excellent information on everything from picking puppies for the work, to how a scene can get screwed up. This book makes good reading for folks in EMS and law enforcement as well. It's an easy read, and packed with useful information. It remains one of my favorite, and most recommended dog training books. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Three Thumbs up from Bob Klein!
This book is a entrancing and resilient entry to any beer lovers library. Each brewery description lingers gracefully in your mind like belgian lace.Even at midbook, although more poignant, like a loyal friend, this tome does not fail to disappoint.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only guide you'll need!
This book is tremendous, and every state in our union should have one!

I knew there was a microbrew revolution occuring in this country, and especially in my state of Pennsylvania, but I wasn't aware of how quickly it occurred. As much as I enjoy brewpubs, I wasn't even aware of how many were so close by until I bought this book. Now I can find about 10 or so about a half hour drive from me.

This book gives a brief history of all of the breweries and brewpubs in Pennsylvania, and includes hours of operation, styles brewed, tour information, and most importantly--maps!

The only problem with this book is that so many brewpubs are appearing that the book will probably be outdated in a few years. No matter--I'll buy the updated editions. Overall I was very impressed with the book and plan on visiting many of the newer brewpubs in the area to make sure they thrive and are successful enough to encourage others to start their own business.

5-0 out of 5 stars "THE" beer and travel guide to PA.
This is, without a doubt, "THE" book for any true beer lover living in or, planning on travelling to, Pennsylvania. Even if you're not a beer lover (if such a creature actually exists), the comprehensive lists of other attractions, side trips, lodgings, pubs, restaurants, etc. make it an invaluable travel guide to the state. I'd say the brewers of Pennsylvania, as well as the Pennsylvania Department of Tourism, owe Mr. Lew Bryson a huge vote of thanks. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Boarding the Teenship!
As I read this book, I was blown away by how the author just made me feel like a teen again. Ms. Lewellen has captured the essence of being a teenager -the emotions, feelings, insecurities, & curiousities of discovering oneself & one's body. Ms. Lewellen covers a broad range of topics with sensitivity & best of all humor. I would have given it a 5 star rating had it not been for some crucial editorial oversights. Page 78 discusses the different types of STD's (sexually Transmitted Diseases) with a brief description for each. AIDS, Hepatitis B, Genital Herpes, Genital Warts are correctly identified as viral diseases. However, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, & Trichomoniasis are not viral but bacterial infections. Information concerning sex must be carefully reviewed especially STD's. With viral diseases, teens must be aware that they cannot be treated with antibiotics as stated in this chapter. Viral diseases like AIDS & herpes have no cure. Also, I wish they had mentioned something about oral sex. Some may disagree that oral sex falls into the category of "having sex" but it is an activity that includes the exchange of bodily fluids, nonetheless. So, yes, you can get some STD's by oral sex (i.e. herpes). Overall, it's a wonderful book but please inform our young people with correct information. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I have not read such a good mystery since THE DaVINCI
A TRACE OF SMOKE was fabulous! I stayed awake until almost two a.m. so that I could finish it. I didn't want to put it down. I have not read such a good mystery since THE DaVINCI CODE by Dan Brown. Finding a well-written book nowadays is difficult. They seem to be written so simply, and many are full of vulgarity and graphic violence. I am ready for the next book.

I really appreciated the colorful descriptions of the Smokies and the surrounding areas, as well as the true-to-life pictures you painted of the mountain people. Grandmother Dare made me think of my own family, especially my Granny (Mama's mother). As I read about Barbara's childhood, I thought of my own, growing up in the woods, climbing trees and building straw houses, feeding mud pies to my brother... so many fun memories.

I called Dad this morning and told him how much I enjoyed the book. He is anxious to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic story!
This book meant a lot to me because my mother died from ephysema 17 years ago at the age of 50 (she had smoked 3 packs a day for many years). Mr. Bryson's story is within the realm of possibilty - knowing how the Tobacco Industry tends to operate (I think it's gutsy of him to "attack" them.) Another commendable thing I noticed is that he didn't use one swear word in the entire book. That's rare in today's society. In my opinion, authors shouldn't use profanity as a crutch! The story was thrilling without being gory. I very much look forward to reading his next novel.

5-0 out of 5 stars MOST ENJOYABLE I'VE READ SO FAR...
I didn't start reading until shortly before my 65th birthday. That was sixteen months ago and since then I have read sixty-one (61) books - most of them by the heavyweights (Stephen King, Ken Follett, Dean Koontz, Jonathan Kellerman, James Patterson, John Sanford, Douglas Preston/Lincoln Child, Lisa Scottoline, the Left Behind Series, all of John Grisham's, and more). "A Trace of Smoke" is by far the most enjoyable book I've read so far. I can hardly wait for his next one. A couple more like this and this author will knock the big guns right off their perches. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Useful book
I am at a loss on what to say about this book. In some ways the book is not what it should be as in the analysis of spacecraft attitude control. The emphasis here is the simplification of the nonlinear Euler equations to simple linear equations to which bang-bang and other control types are then applied. Nothing wrong with that. But if he had left the equations nolinear and applied sliding mode control the results would have been virtually identical and more profound and usable. At the same time there is much information on spacecraft attitude control in the book which is nearly impossible to find elsewhere. The same is true of helicopter and airplane control. The complete emphasis on LQR control is quaint as it is the best possible control. What about more realistic control systems for real aircraft? There is a little in the book on this but very little. The sections on control of flexible systems correspond to the way many missle modelers approach the problem because of its simplicity and usefulness and several useful and interesting examples are worked out. Overall this is a useful reference for certain subject areas but it takes a sophisticated reader to separate the wheat from the chaff. It must be admitted, however, that learning the entire book would not be a bad thing for anyone. Just limiting. ... Read more
