5-0 out of 5 stars Clever Concept!
My daughter just had a birthday last week, and so my brother sent her some books. One of them was "Under the Sea" and the other was "Under the Ground". They are both being enjoyed by my kids (5 and 3) and me! They aren't very long, but they are VERY CLEVER. Every two-page spread has information and drawings on one side, and then a plastic page on top of a black page on the other. You punch out a paper 'flashlight' that is located in the back of the book, slide it under the plastic and are then able to see/highlight what is hidden underneath. We've been looking at them daily and are happy to have them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Under the Sea (First Discovery Book : Hidden World)
I was amazed at how my two and a half year old was totally taken by this book. The concept so simple but so very effective. The flashlight is a definate asset. The animal descriptions are short and concise and the pictures are just perfect. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An extremely helpful edition!
Quainton & Vinestock have produced an extremely helpful edition of Ronsard. From his hundreds and hundreds of poems, they excerpt 85, presenting French text complete with running English translation and relatively complete endnotes. Moreoever, their edition includes a long, robust introduction and a helpful appendix on metre. This book is, in my view, a model of the way in which Romance literature ought to be presented for Anglos. Indeed, the production and design of the volume reminds one almost more of one of the newer Loebs or of the I Tatti Renaissance Library! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WHEN WILL THE TIDE COME BACK IN ?
.

The << Seashore>> is an essential member of the First Discovery series and deserves to be put back in print. There is no doubt many people (and libraries) would like to have a complete set of these titles.

These First Discovery books never cease to amaze. They pioneer the innovative technique of the "double sided overlay", a brilliant illustrating tool which brings excitement and almost dynamic movement to story telling.

The concept of the Seashore book is to emphasise the interface between land and sea, and that place where man and nature interact. The environmental message is strong eg. " Always replace the stone in the same place when you look in rock pools".

The overlays allow us to see the top and bottom of a crab in great detail. We also see inside the hermit crab's shell and the time he does his house-moving!

If you love to eat shell-fish, you will adore the pictures of the oysters, mussels and scallops. By turning the page you see inside the shell. They look good enough to eat. By the way, why do so many chefs discard those gorgeous roes on scallops?

The scene of the wading birds (curlews and oystercatchers) is done particularly well, We get an "underground view" of the burrowing molluscs and the long curving beaks of the birds at the surface hunting for their supper.

The illustrator's art is at its most brilliant when we are looking at a curtain of brilliantly colored seagrasses. There is something lurking behind here. Turn the page and you are face to face with a moray eel.

Track this book down or lobby the publishers to re-print it. It deserves to get a wider audience. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A new translation of The Phenomenon of Man
"You hold The Human Phenomenon" in your hands and one way to understand this is to point to your human agency in grabbing the book. But it is just as true to say that you hold this book because the universe has labored for billions of years to reach a point in its complexification where it can now bring forth something new through you. It comes to you with its own ideas for your future, for what is needed now for the universe's unfolding story is not a new galaxy or a new star. What is needed now is a new form of human being. -- From the Foreword by Brian Swimme, author of The Hidden Heart of the Cosmos

This work by the priest, paleontologist and geologist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin is his book of the Earth, a discovery and an epic journey to open the way out for humanity in a time of world conflict and release the spirit of the Earth. Teilhard guides the reader back in space-time to experience the birth of our planet as it emprisons the human future in its globe and motion, then forward, through the emergence of life, the birth of thought and socialization, and the unique mode of human unfolding as humanity covers the whole planet in an entirely new membrane, the Noosphere. Through a close study of Teilhard's essays, letters, notebooks and retreat notes, his autobiography and key biographical and interpretive studies, poet and scholar Sarah Appleton-Weber aims to represent Teilhard's thought accurately in this translation which is based on a careful comparison of four versions of the French text. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book !
The Art Firm investigates how to apply the methods artists use to create value in their work to the methods managers use to run their businesses. Cases of aesthetic management are cited to illustrate the range of possibilities inherent in this type of application and to understand the potential of this type of operation in the art-based economies of tomorrow.
Absolutely great book, I recommend it to everyone who

5-0 out of 5 stars An introduction to John of the Cross in pratical application
I love these authors! This work was my first introduction to Nemeck and Coombs. Not only is it an excellent introduction to the tenets of St. John of the Cross, it also provides tremendous insight into addiction and attachment, both of which are prevelant in the human condition. Although he lived in the 16c, John of the Cross offers much to contempary Christians interested in being freed from the bondage to self. I highly recommend this, and all books by Nemeck and Coombs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars They did not see the bourgeoisie was coming
An instant scandal when first published in 1782, 'Les Liaisons Dangereuses' remain as one of the most controversial books of all times. Not because it has detailed sexual descriptions --although it has a lot of sexual tension in its pages--, but because it has a candid portrait of the desire and showed the nobles in a way that they weren't used to seeing. Even the Queen, Marie Antoinette, had her copy and read the book with a different jacket, so that nobody wouldn't know she was reading Choderlos de Laclos' masterpiece.

The book is the collection of a more of 100 letters exchanged by a group of nobles in the end of the 18th Century. One of the things that make this novel so brilliant is that is supposed to be a work of nonfiction. The first thing we read is an Editor's disclaimer, where he tells his doubt on publishing these letters. Moreover, he states that the adventures told in those letters could not happen in their time. Then we read a preface written by the author where he tells that he didn't write the letters; therefore, it is not a work of fiction.

And 'Les Liaisons Dangereuses' is so well written that one can believe it is not a work of fiction. Laclos is able to switch his point of view in every new letter; but what is more remarkable is that every person has his/her style and the letters seem to be written by different persons.

In the story there are so many webs perfectly linked that it is almost impossible to put 'Liaisons' in a nutshell. It is easier to state what it is about, albeit different people can have different conclusions on a given work. This novel shows how empty and self-centered the nobles were; that they couldn't notice how much power and money the bourgeoisies had acquired. More than a sexual analyzes, this book is a sociological study of the emptiness of the French nobles.

This book has been adapted to the cinema a couple of times, and my favorite versions are the French one made in the 60s by Roger Vadin, that has a jazzy cool appeal; and the 1988 version directed by Stephen Frears, with a script written by Cristopher Hampton, based on his own stage play --needless to say, based on the novel.

5-0 out of 5 stars and you thought WE were wicked....
Many people have seen one of several movie productions of this book and assumed that it is a modern story that has taken the 18th century as its setting. In fact, the book was written at that time, and it provides a shocking, thrilling, sexy window into the lives of the french aristocracy. It is a thing of beauty. The exploits of the central characters make your average daytime soap opera look tame, and it is all done with a cunning and an evil grace that went out of style with the french revolution. Language is used as an aphrodesiac, a lever, and occasionally a cudgel, and since the book takes the form of the published letters of the main characters we hear it straight from the pens of those involved. "Les Liasons Dangereuses" will make you mourn the invention of the telephone. Such skill with the written word! The double meaning was king, with muddied intentions as its queen. Read this book: you really must. If you love language it will become a favorite of yours, just as it did for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic Worthy of a Spot in Any Booklover's Collection
I must admit, I have to force myself to read the "classics" since I am usually drawn to whichever modern book is getting -- or has recently received -- quite a bit of hype from the media. It made for an interesting literary journal to skip from The Corrections to Les Liasons Dangereuses. Beautifully bound and typeset, this edition of Les Liasons Dangereuses tells a twisted story of the plotting and eventual downfall of two young rich lovers whose evil schemes end up getting the best of them. If you are like me, you may have read this novel after you had seen films based on this 18th century French novel (including -- but not limited to -- 1988's Dangerous Liaisons with Glenn Close and John Malkovich, 1989's Valmont with Annette Bening and Colin Firth, or even 1999's Cruel Intentions with Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon). If you enjoyed these movies, reading the original book -- as is the case in most see-the-movie-then-read-the-book situtations -- will only heighten your appreciation for Pierre C. De Laclos' artful, and at times erotic, storytelling. ... Read more

Customer Reviews (1)

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding architectural history of the "good life"
Rarely, perhaps once in a generation, does an enterprising scholar step forth with a truly novel research idea and the capacity to see it through. Du Prey¹s Villas of Pliny is just this: an utterly fascinating, deliciously composed, and copiously illustrated treatment of a neglected theme in architectural history. Although it is the author¹s object to document the perennial allure for post-medieval architects of Pliny the Younger¹s literary picture of villa life in ancient Rome, the book¹s overall theme could be equally understood as the enduring architectural potency of one man¹s idea of ³the good life.² Du Prey succeeds triumphantly both in the close compass of the historian¹s exercise and in broader quality-of-life issues. The book opens with a leisurely literary examination of Pliny¹s Como letters and proceeds to articulate the four ³cardinal points² of a villa described in the epistles to Gallus (bk. 2, ep. 17) and Apollinaris (bk. 5, ep. 6). Judiciously, Du Prey furnishes translations of these missives as appendices; the translation upon which he relies is John Boyle¹s unsurpassed mid-eighteenth century text. After setting forth some of the basic themes that unite various projects across the centuries, the author proceeds through a historical sequence of reconstruction exercises and built designs each determined by a conscious reflection upon Pliny¹s descriptions of his Laurentine and Tuscan villas. From the Medici¹s documented interest through various ³ruins and restitutions² and ³emulations,² Du Prey offers the reader an engaging tour through one of the most imaginatively fertile corridors of architectural history. Although some of this material will be familiar to reader¹s of James S. Ackerman¹s recent study , Du Prey¹s fidelity to the literary exigencies of his topic keeps him from wandering back to familiar stylistic comparisons with survey material. In fact, it is Du Prey¹s tenacity in seeking out new imagery that keeps one eagerly turning the pages to digest the projects of Francesco Lazzari, William Newton, Stanislas Potocki, Friedrich August Krubsacius, Karl Friedrich Schinkel, Louis-Pierre Haudebourt, Jules-Frédéric Bouchet, and Hubert Stier. Not only has Du Prey expanded our understanding of historically well-established figures like Palladio and Félibien, he has also tilled the fields of relatively obscure talents to great advantage. The author dedicates the majority of one closing chapter to detailed discussions of several designs for a 1982 exhibition and colloquium in Paris; this amounts to a sustained essay in architectural criticism, and many readers will agree that, compared to his historical labors, this section constitutes the least successful portion of the book. Nevertheless, one hopes this study will generate an increased awareness of the significance of the Pliny theme and that other treatments ‹ such as Constantin Lipsius¹s 1889 project in the archive of Dresden¹s Academy of Fine Arts ‹ will find their way into future editions. The opportunity to survey such a rich thematic vein as Pliny¹s legacy invites one to make new connections and associations. One such thought isThe Villas of Pliny should be regarded as a signal contribution to a growing awareness that, in terms of the History of Ideas, the overall continuity of much of nineteenth century art and architectural theory with what has been called the ³RenaissanceBaroque system² is more in evidence than ever before. In other words, while generations of scholars have tended to locate the formal sources of ³modernity² in the late-eighteenth century , the strands linking nineteenth-century ideas about art and creativity to much earlier periods are increasingly difficult to deny. Although such a perspective tends to attenuate the rupture of the ³High Modernism² of the 1920s, the conceptual lineaments of historicism are perhaps better served. Regardless of the book¹s manifold historiographic value, its significance as a stirring, unforgettable read is impossible to deny. [This review originally appeared in The New Criterion.] ...
