Source of legend and lyric, reference and conjecture, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is for most children pure pleasure in prose. While adults try to decipher Lewis Carroll's putative use of complex mathematical codes in the text, or debate his alleged use of opium, young readers simply dive with Alice through the rabbit hole, pursuing "The dream-child moving through a land / Of wonders wild and new." There they encounter the White Rabbit, the Queen of Hearts, the Mock Turtle, and the Mad Hatter, among a multitude of other characters--extinct, fantastical, and commonplace creatures. Alice journeys through this Wonderland, trying to fathom the meaning of her strange experiences. But they turn out to be "curiouser and curiouser," seemingly without moral or sense.

For more than 130 years, children have reveled in the delightfully non-moralistic, non-educational virtues of this classic. In fact, at every turn, Alice's new companions scoff at her traditional education. The Mock Turtle, for example, remarks that he took the "regular course" in school: Reeling, Writhing, and branches of Arithmetic-Ambition, Distraction, Uglification, and Derision. Carroll believed John Tenniel's illustrations were as important as his text. Naturally, Carroll's instincts were good; the masterful drawings are inextricably tied to the well-loved story. 4-0 out of 5 stars Childhood Favorite
This is a childhood favorite. This version of Alice in Wonderland has some of histories greats (Carol Channing, Sammy Davis Jr..) I have seen better acting, but the imagination and costumes out-weigh the bad acting. I won't watch any other version!

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful
When Alice in Wonderland first aired on TV in 1985, we taped in on VHS. Since that time we have worn out the tape and were delighted to find that it was available on DVD! This is THE best version of that wonderful story. The celebrities who assumed the roles of the characters add to the fun! No matter what age you are, you will enjoy this DVD!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Walrus and A. Carpenter
Angelica Carpenter has added to her impressive catalogue of author biographies written for children this one on Carroll, and the acknowledgement page indicates that she took pains over its accuracy by consulting the works and/or persons of several leading members of the Lewis Carroll Society. But she clearly had the good sense not to be overawed or confused by so many viewpoints, and has written here a clear and comprehensive survey of Carrollýs life which covers most of the important occurrences in a way which is accessible and appealing to the young audience at which she is aiming. Presumably on the relatively safe assumption that most of her readers will only know Carroll's Alice books (and maybe even only the Disney film version), she sensibly begins by recounting the story of the original telling of Alice's tale on a nineteenth-century July afternoon, and having enticed her young and therefore easily distracted audience in, is then able to segue neatly into the authorýs actual history. The book is profusely illustrated, and although few if any of the images are unfamiliar to adult devotees of Carroll, their very variety ý ranging amongst others from reproductions of Carrollýs and Tennielýs drawings, to photographs of and by Carroll and others, to ýMr Walker, Profilistýsý 1840 silhouette of Charles Dodgson as a child ý should help to ensure the continued attention throughout the book of the wayward young reader, as well as providing a valuable pictorial background to the biographical information.

I confess I was slightly taken aback to see reference made to the contentious topic of Carrollýs nude photography in Chapter 8, although the author deals with it there accurately and in the laudably proper context of both its perfect normality at the time and the extremely small number of such photographs that Carroll took. My unease was solely at whether this was, in view of the unhealthy interpretations imposed upon it nowadays, an appropriate subject to be mentioned in a childrenýs book at all, but I suspect that I am both very out-of-touch with how sophisticated young people have grown these days, and also with how widespread the wicked rumours are about Carroll that make it no longer possible to write such a book without in some manner dealing with them. Angelica Carpenter expertly dispatches the matter in little more than a page, pulling off the difficult feat of making it clear that the photographs were wholly innocent without implying any suggestion that they might not have been, and if the subject must be dealt with, I doubt it could be done much better. I am less comfortable with the second reference to the subject in the final chapter (Morton Cohenýs discovery of several nude child photographs in the Rosenbach Collection in the 1970s, which fuelled if not initiated the contemporary distrust of Carrollýs motives), but that chapter looks at Carrollian developments since his death, so I suppose this occurrence could not be omitted without rendering the biography dishonest.

In any event, I do not want to give a false impression of Angelica Carpenterýs book by dwelling too long on things which are beyond her control. Her biography is written for twenty-first century children, and although there are difficult matters to be briefly addressed along with the more agreeable account of Carrollýs unblemished life, she presents all her material with the same light touch, deftly ensuring that her young audience will be entertained whilst scarcely realising that they are being thoroughly informed at the same time. I think this excellent biography by Angelica Carpenter might well be helpful in creating enthusiasm among modern youngsters for Carroll himself, a delightfully funny and whimsical author whom they really should read! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars an adapted version
Be aware - this is an adapted version!I was not aware of it when I bought the item - it does not say so clearly anywhere in the book description, only in the reviews."Through the looking Glass And What Alice Found There"that it is paired with is not an adapted version, though

5-0 out of 5 stars This should not be your first introduction to Alice
An occasional review will focus on this point. Alice in Wonderland is no more children's book than, "The Lord of the Rings".

The reason this five star book gets less stars occasionally is not because of its contents or purpose; it is because of either being mistaken for a kids book, in which case one wonders why it is forced on kids, or it is so dated that even the reader thinks it is gobbledygook.

You will find the book full of references to items of the time and play on words of the time.

If you fall into either of these categories then you need to first purchase "The Annotated Alice: The Definitive Edition"; this will clear this understandable confusion.Be aware that every sentience is a play on words for a jab at the culture of that time.

I will not go through the story, as that is why you are buying this book. However I will say that it is a classic and should be part of everyone's cultural education.

When you make it through this book and enjoy it the next challenge should be "Alice's Abenteuer Im Wunderland" German Translation.

If you are also interested in sci-fi then try to get a copy of "Mimsy Were the Borogoves" by Henry Kuttner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Alice in Wonderland
Well the book has all the text, and some of the pictures I remember. But the type is very small, and the introduction very long.It will do, but I really wanted one like the Alice I enjoyed as a child.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderland?
Wonderland?

People today consider Alice in Wonderland a nice children's story.I was looking forward to a simple story similar to the movie. However, upon reading it, I was surprised by the obscure symbolism and meaning Lewis Carroll incorporates into the text.He tells the story from an innocent child's point of view and uses a confusing and random plotline to create a satire of society.Initially, the story is very puzzling. Some chapters must be read multiple times simply to absorb what happened. This wackiness and disorderly organization, although it may lead to making the reader confused, serves a higher purpose in understanding the story.Written in 1865, during the very beginnings of the "Guilded Age" in America, the book strongly emphasizes corruption and insensibility in society.
Overall, I enjoyed Alice in Wonderland. It helped me gain a new perspective on our society.Initially, I was skeptical about the quality of the book. However, as I continued reading, I became used to the writing style and began to appreciate the themes and messages it contained.Everyone should read Alice in Wonderland. Not only does it contain powerful theme about corruption and chaos in society that everyone can learn from, it can also be read in a very short amount of time. However, it should not be read only once, lest much of the meaning be initially misconstrued as unimportant nonsense. It must be examined thoroughly to obtain the most amount of personal growth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Age 6 to 10
A book to be cherished by a child of age 6 through 10 Alice in wonderland tells the story of Alice and her adventures in an unusual land called Wonderland. There have been various cartoons and movies based on the book. They too are enjoyable but if your child is in the reading habit then this book is surely for them. There's no excuse for not reading the book. Gift this to your child and they will not be disappointed. ... Read more

Book Description
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is Robert Sabuda's most amazing creation ever, featuring stunning pop-ups illustrated in John Tenniel's classic style. The text is faithful to Lewis Carroll's original story, and special effects like a Victorian peep show, multifaceted foil, and tactile elements make this a pop-up to read and admire again and again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative and fairly entertaining.
As a self-proclaimed James Barrie freak, I've read numerous books and newspaper-magazine articles about him. The Barrie chapter in Inventing Wonderland is definetly one of the most informative, but it loses a few points in the entertainment department. I read the Carroll, Barrie, and Milne chapters and thought that Jackie Wullschlager tends to examine her subjects a little too closely. At times, her meaning becomes lost in a pile of pop psychobabble, but the overall impressions were very clear (especially Carroll's disturbing fixation with little girls). Especially touching were A.A. Milne's bittersweet descriptions of pride in his adult son Christopher Robin, but at the same time longing to play with his little boy just once more. Such nostalgic, personal pieces make the book is beautiful, but it would be about a hundred times more beautiful if the author had kept the stories a little simpler.

4-0 out of 5 stars Those Strange Victorians
Victorians are experiencing something of a comeback after decades of censure as the strange, repressed, half-crazy relatives we don't want to tell anyone about. We are discovering that the Victorians were not so different from us.

The Victorians did, however, produce their own brand of eccentricity and none are as delightfully eccentric as the Victorian/Edwardian writers for children discussed in Inventing Wonderland. Jackie Wullschlager starts with that greatest of all Wonderland writers, the master himself Lewis Carroll and ends with Jazz Age Pooh creator A.A. Milne.

The eccentricity of these Victorian writers is their confident, and sometimes troubling, obsession with childhood itself. Wullschlager assures us, correctly, that these writers' obsessions did not cross the line into pedophilic behavior. To 21st century sensibilities this seems scarcely creditable, especially after reading letters by Lewis Carroll to various girl children. Carroll, Lear, Barrie and Grahame's effusions about childhood can only be understood within the context of the Victorian age, the age that produced and adored Wordsworth's overly quoted (then and now) "But trailing clouds of glory do we come/From God, who is our home" (Ode: Intimations of Immortality From Recollections of Early Childhood).

Wullschlager is, I think, a bit too dismissive of Milne, who is regarded in the text as a has-been, clinging to the last remnants of the Victorian celebration of childhood. Wullschlager's overall point in this regard, however, is well made. The Victorians invented and took seriously the concept of childhood as a wonderland. Consequently, they produced children's writers of a truly magnificent stature. When the concept of childhood=innocence & pleasure was abandoned, in the early 20th century (thank you, Freud!), the result was an almost tongue-in-cheek parody of the earlier writers. It just wasn't possible to take childhood that seriously anymore.

Writers for children have of course continued to producemasterpieces, largely in the fantasy area, but that particular brand of unself-conscious Victorian nonsense and idyllicism may be lost forever. The Victorians are not as strange to us as we may like to believe, but they are certainly unreproducable.

Recommendation: Interesting, well-written, well-paced. Not the most complete biographical sketches but a complete analysis of biography and art. Give it a try. ... Read more

Alice in Wonderland is a great book that i very much enjoyed. The story was very interesting and enjoyable. I liked how the author made things symbolize something else. 5-0 out of 5 stars alice's adventure in wonderland
A classic book turned into a Disney movie. Alice's Adventure in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, was a very interesting book. Most would think that it would be just like the Disney movie but in fact it is very different. The reader first starts off with Alice following a white rabbit down a hole which she thinks would never end. Then the reader reads that Alice is in a hall with a key trying to open all the doors but cant and realizes that the door she needs to open is very tiny. Alice sees a table with something on it that says "eat me". So Alice eats it and becomes very small but then realizes she forgot the key. She grows back to normal and gets the key and goes through the door. Alice then is outside house and sees the white rabbit and follows it and is given a child to hold which turns out to be a pig. Alice sees the rabbit again and follows it and on the way meets a cat and Alice asks which way should she go and the cat gives her the choices. So Alice starts to walk and finds two creatures sitting at a table having tea and joins them. Later Alice is at the palace and the queen is yelling to have everyone's head removed and invites Alice to play croquet with her. Alice starts to play and realizes it's not the normal game. Later on Alice goes to the trial and tries to help but keeps getting bigger and last the reader reads is Alice waking up and telling her sister about a dream she has just had. I really enjoyed the book. I thought it wasn't going to be that great but it was. I enjoyed all the characters Alice meet and all the weird situations Alice found herself in. My favorite part of the book was when Alice played croquet with the queen and had a flamingo as the stick. I would recommend this book to anyone above the age of 14 because of the content of the book. Also because I'm not quite sure they would understand fully what the book was about. They might also be confused because it's very different from the movie. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A VERY FUN BOOK TO READ WITH THE YOUNG ONES
I cannot think of a better way to introduce the poetry of Lewis Carroll than this small volume. The selection is excellent and of interest you the young reader. The commentary is quite relevant as are the pictures which accompany it.I find that often now, our young people go all the way through the early grades in school and many of them have never heard of carroll, much less read their poetry. This was the sort of stuff my generation and the generation before it grew up on and cut our teeth on.I do not feel I am any worse for the wear.I am fearful that we are bringing up an entire generation (rightfully or wrong, although I feel it is the later) of young folks who will have no appreciation to this great art form and will miss a lot. This book helps. This entire series helps, as a matter of fact and I certainly recommend you add this one and the others to your library.Actually, it is rather fun reading these with the young folk and then talking about them. Not only do you get to enjoy the work your self and perhaps bring back some great memories, but you have the opportunity to interact with your child or student. It is actually rather surprising what some of the kids come up with.I read these to my grandchildren and to the kids in my classes at school. For the most part, when I really get to discussing the work with them, they enjoy it.Recommend this one highly. ...
