For the Higher classes of secondary schools and colleges
The title actually does say Elementary Algebra.Volume II develops continued fraction(Chapters 32-34)topics like Gauss' continued fraction and Hypergeometric functions, and CF's as Continuants, Determinants, series and the transformations between them.The Exercises contain as many gems of theory as the text, some of which I had never seen.Limits, infinite series, infinite products and probability are introduced. The books are easily readable but dated eg 'Number of Years' Purchase of a Freehold' which was of interest in 1889.This is not like Brezinski's History of CFs, but Chrystal clearly had a truely Encyclopedic knowledge of math properly crediting Euler for things sometimes absurdly given to those of this century. This is a readable reference book that is interesting for its Math as well as its historical references. Chrystal did seem to find just the right balance between using too much ink and too little ink in the 1200 pages. The Table of Contents is excellent but the index does not exist, so one has to dig to find the gems. The publication references are without index and buried in the text.Volume I is much less interesting than Volume II.
If this was elementary math in 1889, something has degenerated.
