Product Description
This volume brings together Professor Cranz's published studies on Nicholas of Cusa with a set of seven papers left unpublished at the time of his death. Their subjects are the speculative thought of Cusanus and his relationship with the broader themes of Renaissance. Particular attention is given to patterns of development in Cusanus' thought as he wrestled with problems of divine transcendence and the limits of human capacities. Overall, these studies also reveal Professor Cranz's interest in the larger changes in Western modes of thought during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, which define our ways of thinking as different from those of Antiquity. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Book For Every Scientist, Theologian, and Religious Family
This book by the 15th century biship of the Roman Church, Nicholas of Cusa, is about God and the creation. But this is a new view of God and God's creation through the eye of Nicholas of Cusa who uses negative theology to (1) know the creation and (2) understand God, simultaneously. With this unified view of God and God's creation, God becomes truly absolute because a monotheistic God must create out of nothing and thus has no oppositions.

In this new view of a monotheistic God, the good/evil religious dualism, which is currently used by Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, must be replaced by the identity/difference religious dualism. Theontology of "identity is, in fact, the Christian Trinity and the ontology of "difference"is, in fact, the creation taught by St. Paul at Rom. 1:20. Since a true monotheistic God has no opposing forces, God is not jealous.Nor can opposing forces such as Satan, Devil, demons, and fallen angels exist. Accordingly, love, not fear, becomes the new relationship between God and Man

The true creation of a monotheistic God turns out to be a holistic theophany. In this new creation theory, the creation is eternal and has no end. This implies that the immortality of man is a natural process and that evolutionary theory is false. In Cusa's creation, God reveals Himself through contracted images of Himself. These images are infinite in God and are contracted by God with plurality and finitude. Since God creates out of nothing, God is thus found in all creature, that is, in a way that God is all actual creatures.

This book must be read by all godly persons.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent translation of brilliant Renaissance philosopher
If Shakespeare was the first (and last) person to understand what is a human being, Nicholas of Cusa (1401-1464) was the first (and last) person to understand what is God. God -- of course -- is the object of mathematics. Nicholas' most important book _On Learned Ignorance_ (De Docta Ignorantia), inspired by Plotinus and pseudo-Dionysius, uses mathematical models in an attempt to describe God as the Unknowable One; in the process, Nicholas stumbles upon ideas that will later be formalized in calculus, non-Euclidean geometry, and the transfinite numbers of Cantor. Although Nicholas is best read in Latin, Jasper Hopkins' translation is at once very precise and superbly readable; the commentary is intelligent and informed ... Read more

Product Description

Nicholas of Cusa (1401–1464), widely considered the most important original philosopher of the Renaissance, was born in Kues on the Moselle River. A polymath who studied canon law and became a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church, he wrote principally on speculative theology, philosophy, and church politics. As a political thinker he is best known for De concordantia catholica, which presented a blueprint for peace in an age of ecclesiastical discord.

This volume makes most of Nicholas’s other writings on Church and reform available in English for the first time, including legal tracts arguing the case of Pope Eugenius IV against the conciliarists, theological examinations of the nature of the Church, and writings on reform of the papacy and curia. Among the works translated are an early draft of De concordantia catholica and the Letter to Rodrigo Sanchez de Arevalo, which discusses the Church in light of the Cusan idea of “learned ignorance.”

4-0 out of 5 stars Important Ecclesiastical Writings from the Early Stages of the Reformation
Cardinal Nicholas Cusanus (1401-1464 AD) is generally accepted by scholars to be the most original thinker of the Italian renaissance--a most honorable distinction for a man who thrived during a golden epoch of history which was copiously adorned with creative intellects in every sphere of culture imaginable. In addition to being a first-rate philosopher, we must figure in Nicholas Cusa as one of the most prominent churchman of his era, being widely known for his mystical tractates, his efforts for the preservation of Church unity and for his massive corpus of sermons, theological and ecclesialogical literature, of which this volume contains a substantial selection.

In this volume, readers will be introduced, for the first time in English, to writings that predate the division of western Christendom by some fifty years (approximately) and are on that account of momentous value to readers interested in probing into these first-hand sources in order to evaluate some of the key factors which came into play in what would later become the Reformation.Topics such as the reception of the Eucharist in both species (in opposition to the practice at the time permitting only the Body and not the Blood of Christ to be received), the authority of the Councils in relation to the Pope, Church reform from within and sermons which elucidate and explicate central passages in scripture that are foundational in confirming the priority of the Roman See.

Overall, these selections from the writings of Cardinal Nicholas Cusanus have been long overdue in being rendered into the English tongue for readers devoid of proficiency in ecclesiastical Latin. But if it were not for the I Tatti series, it would have, in all likely-hood been next to impossible to gain access to Cusa's original Latin text, which is thankfully presented here as well. The renaissance scholar, reader, historian, theologian, or the reader simply enamored with articulate and brilliant theology and scriptural exegesis, will find a great abundance of material to digest in this volume.

Product Description

The doctrine of theosis means a salvation that is the deification of the saved. The saved actually become God. This unusual doctrine lies at the heart of Nicholas of Cusa's (1401-1464) mystical metaphysics. It is here examined for the first time as a theme in its own right, along with its implications for Cusanus's doctrine of God, his theological anthropology, and his epistemology.

Nancy Hudson opens her book with a historical introduction of the term "theosis" from its roots in the Greek fathers (Gregory of Nyssa and Maximus the Confessor) to its mature development in Pseudo-Dionysius. The two interdependent movements of divine self-manifestation and divine mystery, immanence and transcendence, are presented as the dynamic nexus out of which theosis arises. Divine self-manifestation is explored as both a prerequisite and a mode of theosis. The negative theology that results from divine mystery highlights the limitations of human reason as well as the human mind's potential for being the image of God. The Christological character of theosis is found in Nicholas of Cusa's doctrine of Christ as the Word of God, his understanding of the ascent of the intellect to divine Wisdom, and his concept of divine sonship. Nicholas of Cusa's emphasis on the intellect in salvation is controversial because it appears to privilege the mind over the body, undermine the goodness of creation, and ignore the place of repentance from sin in salvation.

In short, Nicholas of Cusa's doctrine of theosis reveals the strong influence of Greek philosophy. At issue is his orthodoxy and whether he replaces Christian doctrine with Greek thought, while maintaining only the language of Christian theology. The thorough analysis of theosis in this book reveals that Nicholas of Cusa does indeed follow tradition, though it is the tradition of the Eastern church. ...
