Product Description
A House by the River. IN 1884 Professor George Darwin, newly married to an American bride, was looking for a house i Cambridge. He bought Newnham Grange, and with the aid of a talented and sympathetic architect, J. J. Stevenson, altered the house and adjoining granaries to make an unusual and uniquely attractive family home. Margaret Keynes, who was Sir George's younger daughter, gives in this account of the house in which she was born a fascinating and intricate history of the many transformations of a site which has been in constant use for the last 500 years, and this will deeply interest the topographer and all who know Cambridge... ... 2-0 out of 5 stars What?
In Europe now for almost 2 years I have done a lot of page flipping with this book ... back and forth...searching for useful information. There is some but certainly not worthy of over one thousand pages. Now I am headed for France and this will be my first time in Paris and was planning a trip to Normandy so I opened my book and there is absolutely no mention of anything. They have a map of France with some of the cities in this region and have chose to exclude everything else. I have heard so much about the museums and memorials, as well as the towns, scenery and atmosphere of this region. It is a shame this book does not describe it. 2 stars for effort...but my niece came to visit during her Europe trip and she had Rick Steves Travel Book...she loved it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Frommer's Europe--Missing Poland
I purchased this book because of a cruise I will be taking in the fall.I was looking for background on all the countries I would visit in Europe. This book has nothing on Poland--only listed on the map.Otherwise I felt there was a lot of excellent information.

2-0 out of 5 stars Glad it was cheap
Def not a good book for those who don't like to travel to just the big cities. It has a basic synopsis of 2-3 major cities in each of the countries. It mostly focuses on hotels and restaurants instead of sights.A better book tobuy is Lonely Plants On a Shoestring, it at least gets cities that aren't complete tourist attractions and gives you some sights to see. It's sad that I now have to buy a book specifically for each country that I'm going to visit and so far that's gonna be over 7 books to tote around.Def save your money and do internet research or get lonely planets book

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for yourself or as a Gift
Gave this as a gift to a friend who traveled Europe for 3 months on a study abroad program with her college. She used it every step of the way. Some people just don't think to buy something like this for traveling because they don't know that it even exists!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good guide

5-0 out of 5 stars Darwin's first great achievement
On the voyage of the Beagle--before he had ever seen a coral reef--Darwin had deduced an explanation of the geological processes that created them by applying Charles Lyell's explanation of uplift and subsidence.Accordingly, he posited that the Chilean coast had been rising while the ocean floor was subsiding. When he finally explored some barrier reefs, he knew that since the polyps could not live deeper than 120 feet, and all the coral below that was dead, the confirmation of the reefs' great depth was evidence of subsidence--a theory that has stood the test of time. This is an attractive and affordable edition of Darwin's treatise. ... Read more

Product Description
Who would have thought that a how-to manual, a pastor's guide, could be witty, charming and fun? Unbinding Your Church, the Pastor's Guide to the Real Life Evangelism Series, by author, researcher, pastor and attorney Martha Grace Reese, is all that.

It will help you lead your congregation through a year of life-changing and church-changing study of prayer and faith sharing. Based on the a major, four-year study of superb evangelism, funded by the Lilly Endowment, the Real Life Evangelism Series sparkles with life, practicality, and spiritual depth. The Series has been enthusiastically endorsed by eight heads of denominations as well as by professors of evangelism, leading experts, and pastors. Unbinding the Gospel, the basis of the Series, was selected by The Christian Century as a featured "Take and Read" book in its 2007 Book Issue

Church leaders should first study Unbinding the Gospel (the church leaders' study) then use Unbinding Your Heart for the whole congregation. Unbinding Your Church (the pastor's guide) will help you use both books to maximal effect.Be sure to order Church early. It will help you teach and plan effectively from the very beginning. You will spend your time on what matters--praying, teaching, working directly with your people.

Unbinding your Church offers:

Worship resources: Seven engaging, theologically-rich, inspiring sermons you can adapt or adopt; short Bible teaching on texts; children's activities, prayers and complete coordinated music plans from four stellar and diverse church musicians.

Step-by-step planning tools: Advice for pastors, church staff, organizers, small group leaders, prayer group leaders, and leaders of childrenand youth. Calendars, check-lists, rosters, forms, impact diagrams, invitations, Web site and e-mail ideas will help you organize the E-vent, establish and intercessory prayer group, recruit small group leaders, form new groups and help existing groups commit to the all-congregation study.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbinding Your Church
There are churches dying all over the country. Here is a handbook, with step-by-step illustration and endearingly relateable stories, to help reverse that trend.

The book is chock-full of inventive ideas, some even drawn out into visual illustrations, such as informative and educational tables (also accurate, not some fake Google web page information floating around). This book sparkles with suggestions in this reliable, solid literature; technological nudges to get the church out of the dark ages [=)], quirky yet effective sweet ways to connect with children (such as permissions slips to take a little time off to realize how much God loves you), and encouraging groups to form a powerful part of the congregation, instead of only relying on the pastor for spiritual guidance...it goes on, in an easy-to-read format, designed for accessibility.

If you want to be more involved in your church, pick this book up. If you want to examine how you look at your spiritual life, the conceptual aspects of faith and prayer, ways to practice those concepts, what it means to be in a church (or not in one), and the meaning of religious-related words you might never think twice about, pick it up. If you want to spread the love of your congregation but don't quite know how, pick this book up. In general, I'd say....check out the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Advice for REAL Church Transformation
Easy to read, easy to understand, this book follows the well written style of Unbinding the Gospel. On the surface, through a quick read, it would appear that this text is a step by step guide on leading a church through transformation.Well, yes, kind of, sort of, no.There is no question that this text provides outstanding guidance on HOW to lead a church, from 20 members to 2,000 members, through a period of transformation. But a deeper read makes it clear that it is NOT about a process, program or "ministry", it is about reconnecting to the fundamentals of who we are as a believing body.

As an example, the text recommends that a church conduct an "E-vent" where for 6-7 weeks EVERYTHING stops (except for worship)...no meetings, no boards, no teacher training or new member luncheons...EVERYTHING stops. Why?So that ideally the ENTIRE church family may pause for a 6 week period of Bible study and prayer. After all, for a Christian, what is MORE impotant than connecting with God?If the guidance is followed, a small group ministry will just NATURALLY develop (oh, it is SO tricky how THAT happens...first there were none, now there are a dozen or more...reading, praying, studying, loving God and one another)!!!

The author is quick to point out that the text is not to be WORK, but rather about merely allowing God to transform the church from the inside out. And, like the other texts in the series, it avoids using one of the most toxic words in a postmodern world, "evangelism" YET, it is evangelism at its very best (shhhh, keep that word a secret...but it really DOES work!).

Want an easy read that is theologically sound, crosses denominational lines, can be used by any size church, and can help make a lasting difference in your life and your church?THIS is the one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Problems with Kindle version of Unbinding Your Church - please buy a physical copy
I love this book (okay, I'm the author!), and I ADORE my new Kindle2, but just for a while, please buy the physical version of this book, not the Kindle option.Unbinding the CHURCH has great formatting - with sidebar quotes and space for you to write notes.Unfortunately, the Kindle version pulled the sidebar quotes INTO the main body of the text. This is really goofy!Chalice Press and Amazon are working to straighten it out, but until they do, please buy an actual book.I'll pull this review down when this has been corrected.

Great news:the Unbinding the Gospel books are in over 12,000 congregations, and they are actually working.People are starting to pray, talk about their faith with each other, and to invite friends to church.See our website (GraceNet.info) for information, videos, or to join a discussion community about using the books in your church.Blessings on your ministry - Martha Grace Reese

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Resource!
Martha Grace Reese has done it again. In this second book, Reese gives us the tools and the road map that we need to revitalize our churches! The whole Unbinding process is mapped out in this book. You spend the first 8-24 weeks going over the first book with core leaders in your church, then 12-16 weeks planning the E-vent, then 6 weeks where the entire congregation using the third book, engages in the E-vent.The E-vent is done in small groups.

I recommend this book as required reading for all church pastors who are starting or renewing churches.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for Growing Mainline Churches
In early 2007 Martha Grace Reese (aka Gay Reese) saw the publication of her best-selling book Unbinding the Gospel: Real Life Evangelism. It became a hit because it spoke to Mainline Protestants about an issue we Mainliners like to steer clear of - evangelism - in a way that we could understand and appreciate. It challenged us to see things differently. Gay makes this point clear when she speaks of God doing something different in our churches.

"In some ways, mainline churches have operated like a minority political party, the 'loyal opposition' for too long. We have critiqued, held back and said what's wrong with other parts of Christ's church. Many of the things we've said may have a lot of truth in them. But it's holding back that's the problem. That's us planted in playground dust. Many of us haven't done as good a job of putting our beliefs and lives on the line to follow the Spirit. We don't have a lot of experience leading in new, positive directions. It is going to take vast divinely inspired imagination for us to shift if we want God to use us in powerful, creative ways for new things" (p. 15).

Too often the evangelism resources we use are geared to Conservative Evangelicals and they simply don't sit well and so nothing happens. Unbinding the Gospel, however, was just the first salvo, the first offering in a series of three books. It is an introduction to the issue and the process, written with church leaders in mind. At the heart of this series is the belief that our ability to share our stories of faith with others is rooted in a committed and living relationship with God. The series is intended to help stir the spirit within us and give us the courage to share those stories with others, that they might find God and perhaps find their way into our communities of faith.

Book 2 in what has become the Real Life Evangelism Series, is entitled Unbinding Your Church. It is designed for pastors and those leaders who will guide the process. Gay is assisted in this process by Dawn Darwin Weaks, a Disciple pastor who provides sample sermons (yes this process involves a bit of preaching) and worship suggestions, and Catherine Riddle Caffey, who designed the charts and forms available online for use in a six week intensive church wide study. The final book is a revision of the first book designed for use by congregation members that includes a forty day prayer guide. This final book is entitled Unbinding Your Heart.

My attention here, however, is on the book for pastors and key leaders of this event. What Gay has provided is a step by step process of planning and enacting what she calls an "E-vent" - an Evangelism Event. If you read this manual, at times you will find yourself overwhelmed - especially if you are like me and you're a small church pastor. Fortunately Gay sprinkles through out the book a reminder that each church needs to adapt this process to their own situation. What is most telling in this guide, is the reminder that anything worth doing requires time and energy and planning. This isn't a process that you undertake at short notice. You must spend time reading, praying, planning, praying, recruiting, praying, and on. Her goal: changing habits and not just minds.

I tend to be an optimist, full of hope, and as Gay suggests we have a tendency to get all fired up about something, but then let it slide away due to lack of planning and commitment. The realist on the other hand, sees the dangers and the difficulties, focuses on the details and never gets started. The key then is balancing our hopes and optimism with enough realism to stay the course once we get started.

The book is composed of two parts. Part 1 lays out the process of planning and carrying out the event. She suggests spending 8 to 24 weeks in step 1 - using in Unbinding the Gospel - to discern whether to move forward (that is where my congregation is currently at - our elders are reading the book, just starting the book). After or concurrently with Step 1, another 12 to 16 weeks is spent utilizing this book - Unbinding Your Church - as pastors, staff, music team, small group leaders, and prayer team, work to discern the way forward and to organize the event itself. Finally there is Step 2, the E-vent using Unbinding Your Heart (Chalice 2008) which lasts 6 weeks, followed up by evaluation and implementation.

This book is the key to the success. It is methodical, overwhelming, detailed, but ultimately the key to understanding the way forward. The books themselves are only part of the package. Other forms are available online (the password is in the book) for downloading.

If you want to get a better sense of the process and its foundations, check my review of Unbinding the Gospel here. Check too the website -- http://www.gracenet.info/ -- and see what is available to review. I do think this is an exciting opportunity for the Mainline churches to discover their voice. The key, however, is rediscovering the conversation with God called prayer, something I like many find difficult to attend to with any consistency and diligence.
