Van Oldenbarnevelt studied law at Leuven, Bourges, Heidelberg and Padua, and traveled in France and Italy before settling in The Hague. He was a Calvinist, so he supported William the Silent in his revolt against Spain, and fought in William's army. He served as a volunteer for the relief of Haarlem (1573) and again at Leiden (1574). In 1576 he obtained the important post of pensionary of Rotterdam, an office which carried with it official membership of the States of Holland. In this capacity his industry, singular grasp of affairs, and persuasive powers of speech speedily gained for him a position of influence. He was active in promoting the Union of Utrecht (1579) and the offer of the countship of Holland and Zeeland by William (prevented by Williams death in 1584). He was a fierce opponent of the policies of the Earl of Leicester, the governor‐general at the time, and instead favoured Maurice of Nassau, a son of William. Leicester left in 1587, leaving the military power in the Netherlands to Maurice. During the governorship of Leicester, Van Oldenbarnevelt was the leader of the strenuous opposition offered by the States of Holland to the centralizing policy of the governor. Excerpt: Johan de Witt, heer van Zuid- en Noord-Linschoten, Snelrewaard, Hekendorp and IJsselveere (Dordrecht, 24 September 1625 The Hague, 20 August 1672) was a key figure in Dutch politics at a time when the Republic of the United Provinces was one of the Great Powers in Europe, dominating trade routes and thus the wealthiest and mightiest nation in the world. In the mid 17th century he controlled the Netherlands political system in close cooperation with his uncle Cornelis de Graeff. Johan de Witt was born as the son of Jacob de Witt, an influential burgher from the patrician class in the city of Dordrecht which, in the seventeenth century, was one of the most important cities of the dominating province of Holland. Johan and his older brother Cornelis de Witt grew up in a privileged environment in terms of education, his father having important scholars and scientists, such as Isaac Beeckman, Jacob Cats, Gerhard Vossius and Andreas Colvius as good acquaintances. Jacob de Witt greatly valued stoicism. Johan and Cornelis both attended the latin school in Dordrecht, which impregnated both brothers even more with the values of the Roman Republic. As Johan proved to be a highly gifted student, he was rewarded by being allowed the role of Julius Caesar in a school play. Wendela Bicker (1659), by Adriaen Hanneman Johan de Witt married 16 February 1655 Wendela Bicker (1635-1668), daughter of Jan Bicker (1591-1653), an influential patrician from Amsterdam, and Agneta de Graeff van Polsbroek (16031656). Jan Bicker served as mayor of Amsterdam in 1653. De Witt became a relative to the strong republican minded brothers Cornelis and Andries de Graeff and to Andries Bicker. Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Christiaan Huygens, FRS (English pronunciation: , Dutch: ; 14 April 1629 - 8 July 1695) was a prominent Dutch mathematician, astronomer, physicist, horologist, and writer of early science fiction. His work included early telescopic studies elucidating the nature of the rings of Saturn and the discovery of its moon Titan, the invention of the pendulum clock and other investigations in timekeeping, and studies of both optics and the centrifugal force. Huygens achieved note for his argument that light consists of waves, now known as the Huygens-Fresnel principle, which became instrumental in the understanding of wave-particle duality. He generally receives credit for his discovery of the centrifugal force, the laws for collision of bodies, for his role in the development of modern calculus and his original observations on sound perception (see repetition pitch). Huygens is seen as the first theoretical physicist as he was the first to use formulae in physics. Christiaan Huygens by Bernard Vaillant, Museum Hofwijck, Voorburg Christiaan Huygens. Il est un fervent défenseur de l'Union d'Utrecht, proclamant l'indépendance des Provinces-Unies en 1579. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Grand Book about a Grand Man (and a Grand Time)
Professor Rowen is one of those rare historians who seems to possess both the grace of the English amateurs and the precision of their earnest German counterparts. While his books often focus on the ruling classes -- or on a particular member, as in this case -- he does not neglect to express what is going on with everyone else and with the culture as a whole.Historically curious Americans will find great instruction in learning about the Dutch who were our truest ancestors both in terms of religion and cultural mores and in terms of the endless quest for financial success. And Rowan is a very serious and gentle teacher. One cannot go wrong with this book. ...
