Herndon aspired to write a faithful portrait of his friend and law partner, Abraham Lincoln, based on his own observations and on hundreds of letters and interviews he had compiled for the purpose. Even more importantly, he was determined to present Lincoln as a man, rather than a saint, and to reveal things that the prevailing Victorian conventions said should be left out of the biography of a great national hero. A variety of obstacles kept Herndon from writing his book, however, and not until he found a collaborator in Jesse W. Weik did the biography begin to take shape. It finally appeared in 1889, to decidedly mixed reviews. Though controversial from the outset, "Herndon's Lincoln" nonetheless established itself as a classic, and remains, as Don E. Fehrenbacher declared, "the most influential biography of Lincoln ever published." Great Book, but not a great edition
Herndon's Lincoln, originally published over 100 years ago, is an essential and very readable personal account of Lincoln's law partner. What does this recent edition have to offer that other, less expensive, versions do not? (Essentially, it's the same book, of course.)

There are two main, new features of this edition. First, there is a new "editors' introduction," that is interesting and helpful in describing the history and evolution of the early editions. Secondly, the editors have added some 42 pages of their own, new footnotes at the end of the book. Most of those new footnotes are primarily of academic interest and are likely to be of limited interest to many readers. And, with the new footnotes placed inconveniently at the end of the book, referring to them while reading the book is awkward and disruptive to somebody "just reading the book," as opposed to an academic researcher.

This edition also omits many of the pictures included in original versions of the book. The original footnotes of Herndon (and his co-author, Weik) have been set in a font that is too small to read comfortably - a smaller font, in fact, than employed for the editors' 42 pages of newly added footnotes.

I would look for other, more economical editions. My overall rating applies to this particular edition, not the original book itself.

Herndon's Lincoln, Edited by Douglas Wilson and Rodney O. Davis
I recently attended the 200th aniversary of Lincoln's birthday in Springfield and was able to meet both Wilson and Davis, two very fine men. The are arguably two of the most revered and knowledgeable scholars on Lincoln of all time, certainly in the last twenty-five years.
The two gentlemen have taken previously written books from the Knox College (Illinois) Studies Center such as Herndon's Informants, and have added additional research beyond where Herndon's interviews and affidavits left off. The result is a resounding hit! They have a book that though from 2006, is released in conjunction with the Lincoln-Douglas Debates 150th anniversary in 2008, and the birthday Bicentennial in 2009, as mentioned in the book. You will enjoy this as it stands alone in sorting out the defects and criticisms of the original Herndon research, deficient due to the rift with Weik and Robert Lincoln. In short, it helps to fill in some of the gaps left in previous attempts by others. It is a good book and your time reading it will be well spent. Rob Hutchins

required reading
I ditto the first 5-star. Maybe we could say that there are popular biographies, scholarly biographies and personal recollections. There is no substitute for Herndon's recollections, a man who spent thousands of hours with Lincoln in everyday life. Sure, he's no Boswell; sure, some factual claims may be in dispute...but there are still those thousands of hours. This may not be the only - or even "best" - biography of Lincoln, however, if you're reading two biographies, I'd say this should be the second.

I actually didn't have a problem with the book's format and I'm 66 and read most of it in bed. It's more well produced than the average 21st cent volume. I was disappointed that the editors chose to leave out some of the original illustrations. Whatever they thought of them, I prefer to see volumes as they originally appeared, if possible.

There are some spots that drag (the duel episode, for instance) but it's quite an easy read and this edition, in the notes in the back, clarifies all controversial points. ( These endnotes that modern books almost always substitute for footnotes ARE something to gripe about!) I don't think I've gotten such a feel for Lincoln, the walking, talking human being, from another source.

A voice as close to Lincoln as you can read
Herndon's Lincoln almost ignored by everyone, but Lincoln scholars has been republished. Editors Doug Wilson and Rodney Davis both of Knox College have made the source of much Lincoln history available to today's reader. Herndon was a great researcher, but his writing style is very odd sounding to modern ears.His partner Jesse Weik is the primary author of the text and is very readable.It was published late in Herndon's life and never reached the wide audience he had hoped.It is an essential source for anyone interested in who Lincoln was and how he came to be the great nineteenth century politician. You will arrive at a much fuller appreciation for the political climate of early Illinois and the Western states as they were known at that time.Lincoln is revealed by the reflections of his contemporaries as an admirable man, as a complex man, and as an imperfect man.Herndon relates events he was directly involved in as a first hand witness to who was A. Lincoln.He spent a great deal of time collecting correspondence from those who knew Lincoln before he became President.It seems that Herndon struggles to find the words to capture the true man, he is never satisfied with his efforts.You can almost hear him thinking the plow won't scour. His collected letters speak for themselves. History is greatly in debt to Lincoln's law partner, William Herndon, and modern readers seeking to learn more of Lincoln are greatly in debt to Wilson and Davis. If you are not a Lincoln scholar, I would skip to "a note on the text and annotation" and then start reading, you will come back to the preface with a much better understanding after you are done.Lincoln as he was, neither all saint nor all sinner.I can't imagine a more essential book for those who are interested in studying Abraham Lincoln.

Herndon Revisited
This is a reprint of the Lincoln biography published in the 1880s by his former law partner, Billy Herndon.Lincoln biographers have spent 95 years telling why Herndon was mistaken about this or that--until recently.Now they are beginning to say the earlier historians were wrong and Herndon was probably right.I had never read Herndon, but only had seen him quoted selectively. Billy comes through as a very honest man and a bit like Lincoln.One can see why the latter asked him to be his partner, and stuck it out in partnership with him for a good 20 years.The editors say Herndon was a better back-room lawyer than Lincoln, but Lincoln a much better courtroom lawyer, and the partnership complemented itself that way.Billy was better at research, and that suggests Billy did very good research on his Lincoln biography, too.Shortly after Lincoln was shot Herndon interviewed and corresponded with scores of people from Lincoln's family and his early life.It's easy to see why the law firm was successful, because Billy was a real bulldog.But his book was not well received in the 1880s when first published, largely because many thought it too crude in those days to point out Abe's mother's illegitmacy, etc.But Herndon was going to put down whatever the facts bore out.He adored Lincoln, and believed his greatness would be enhanced more by the truth than by lies...I now have a much higher regard for Herndon than formerly...On the other hand, the editors and publisher deserve low marks for the smallness of the type face, which goes down even smaller in the footnotes, making this important book more difficult to read than it should be.Don't be put off by the first Preface, either, which should be either buried at the end of the book or deleted. ... A major contribution to Lincoln studies
With Herndon's Informants Douglas L. Wilson and Rodney O. Davis have made a tremendous contribution to Lincoln scholarship.Much of what we know of Lincoln's pre-presidential years, especially, was compiled through interviews and correspondence by Lincoln's last law partner William H. Herndon.Although many of these items were published decades ago in Emanuel Hertz's anthology The Hidden Lincoln, that collection's limitations have long frustrated Lincoln students.The only alternative was the expensive and awkward-to-use microfilm verison of Herndon's papers available from the Library of Congress.

Now, however, Wilson and Davis have made this treasure trove of firsthand information available in an affordable and convenient format.Moreover, they have carefully tried to reproduce texts exactly, retaining oddities of spelling and punctuation, a feature entertaining to ordinary readers and valuable to scholars.The book's presentation of documents in chronological order is welcome.Scholars will probably be the main consumers using this product.

This volume is a major contribution to Lincoln studies.

The Real Lincoln!!
Forget authors, historians with agendas.Read what the people who actually knew Abraham Lincoln said about him.

Before Lincoln's body was cold, William Herndon, Lincoln's law partner for 17 years and friend for longer, began interviewing Lincoln's friends, family members, enemies, acquaintances, neighbors, etc. His goal was to collect as much information as possible about his friend, so he could write a completely truthful biography. "Warts and all" Herndon said.Unfortunately, Herndon soon realized he could not use some of the information he collected because it was very personal and Lincoln's image would be tarnished.Fortunately, some of this information he could not use you will find in this book. While 98% of this book contains very interesting information about all aspects of Lincoln's life.It is the remaining 2%, the unsavory stuff, that is so fascinating! For instance, I was surprised to read about the number of Lincoln's friends who told stories about Lincoln's involvement with prostitutes (before his marriage). Some friends even speculate about Lincoln maybe having one or two illegitimate children. This book contains information I never learned in school about Lincoln!

A Masterpiece in Scholarship
In the preface to his "Life of Lincoln", William Herndon expounded that when writing the history of Lincoln's early life "the whole truth concerning him should be known" and there should be "nothing colored or suppressed." Having set the standard Herndon failed to follow it, for there were something's even Herndon must have felt should not be put into print. Scholars wishing to explore Lincoln's early life beyond the insights offered by Herndon's biography had to turn to examining the letters and notes collected for over a twenty year period by himself and his collaborator Jesse Weik. This often proved to be a daunting task. As the editor's in their introduction noted even though available on Micro roll film specific documents are "very hard to locate" and even if located are "very hard to read." To further complicate matters the index to the Herndon collection prepared by the Library of Congress is "neither accurate nor complete." What Editors Douglas L. Wilson and Rodney O. Davis have done in their "Herndon's Informants" is to transcribe all of the known Herndon, Weik letters and notes into a readable and properly indexed Documentary Edition. What they have also done is create a masterpiece of scholarship that will be used by students of Lincoln for decades to come. "Herndon's Informants" offers the student the complete Herndon collection, unabridged and un-editorialized. More, please
"Mom, can we read Duncan's War?!" Is the plea I have from my son every morning. He loves Duncan's adventures and I love that he's also becoming familiar with history: 1600s Scotland. The church v. the king, there's persecution, a drunk vicar catching fire during the sermon that's supposed to be on Sunday but he holds it on Saturday (he's drunk, remember), old castle ruins, a stand for what's right, and fun scottish accents. It's funny, intense, suspenseful. I've kept the dictionary close by and I've stopped and explained a few things but basically it seems my 8 year old is able to grasp the happenings (he WANTS MORE)! (He couldn't read it on his own, I'm reading it aloud.) I'd probably suggest it is a bit beyond him, but at this point we're both hooked. (I'm tempted to read on without him because I can't wait to see what happens.) My 4 year old daughter is less than impressed (not enough pictures you know!)

Fascinating historical novel

Duncan must grow up quickly as he sees the price others have paid for their devotion to the Covenant and Jesus, the only true Head of the Church. And in the end he must take an extreme risk to keep his father from paying that same price. Infused with historical fact, "Duncan's War" makes us believe, for a short time, that we are truly in early Scotland. And it accurately depicts the struggles our predecessors faced to follow Christ.

excellent historical fiction
I bought this for my Scottish history enthusiast child, but after reading them myself, it turned into a must read to the whole family of eight, including Dad. Since then, we have purchsed every Douglas Bond book we can acquire. This is a time of Scotland and Scottish Covenanters that I have found few people are familiar with. It is an important addition to a study of the American Revolution in that so many Scottish Covenanters fought in that in Europe it is also referred to as the Presbyterian Rebellion. Mr. Bond also lines out for the reader at the end which characters are documented nonfiction, and which are not, what of the story is fiction, and what is clearly not, and how he changed them. A very valuable addition to our large family library, and to the education of our children. It also shares principles and values that we very much want to instill in our 6 children.

These are great books!!!!!! There's three in this series, DUNCANS WAR, KINGS ARROW, AND REBELS KEEP. I read them all in six days,and altogether there are over seven hundred pages. This one's about duncan M'Kethe who helps the covenanters fight the cruel British soldiers. When they capture the British Dragoons leader, what will they do with him? Some say shoot him... You'll have to read it yourself to find out. I highly reccomend these books, and if anyone gives them less than five stars, they surprise me a whole lot.

We started reading Duncan's War by Douglas Bond together as a family sometime during the fall.We became so excited about the story that we had to put the children under strict orders not to touch the book during the day, but they had to wait until family reading hour."No Peeking!" was the command they would hear when their hand would reach slyly for the book on the end table.

Duncan's War is followed by The King's Arrow and then finally Rebel's Keep.This series, called the Crown and Covenant, follows the lives of the M'Kethe family during 17th Century Scotland as they endured brutal persecution at the hand of King James and King Charles.Those that remained loyal to King Jesus called themselves the Scottish Covenanters.This is the story of those who must wrestle with honoring God and applying His word while living amidst a government that is trying to obliterate Christianity.

As a reader, I was particularly struck with what I would do if I were in this situation with my own family.While reading these stories, I had to grapple with the scriptures as I put myself in their shoes.As a father and a Christian, I want to honor God and obey His word above all else.And yet I desire desperately to protect my children from all outside harm.In the story, the children watch their father's actions as he attempts to obey King Jesus above all others, and while they do not fully understand them at the time, they come to appreciate them more fully later as they grow and mature.The father never compromises his integrity in the midst of war.He clearly keeps the perspective that this life on earth is not the only one we live for.There is one to come.How we live and die here will show Whom it is we honor.This is how I want to live.I want to set a strong example for my children as I live out God's word even during difficult times.While reading these stories, I was struck once again that how we live in this life has implications in the next.We are to live for the Audience of One.

I just finished reading The Formula for Happiness, and wanted to thank the authors for presenting a very easy-to-read, practical manual for learning about what makes us happy and how we can become happier by taking very simple steps toward that goal.
I'm a 62 year old grandma who is always looking for ways to help my grandkids grow up healthier, happier and more successful. I will insure that all my grandchildren read this book and believe that if they use the formula presented, they will be much better prepared to handle the choices they must make along the way to be happier and more sensible adults.

This one is a MUST read!
Finally! A commonsense approach to improving one's life! Unlike other authors and psychologists who insist that one's level of happiness is dependent on how you were raised, your station in life, or biochemistry, this book puts it firmly in the reader's control.
