Excerpt: Jean-Jacques Rousseau (28 June 1712 2 July 1778) was a major Genevois philosopher, writer, and composer of 18th-century Romanticism. His political philosophy influenced the French Revolution and the development of modern political, sociological and educational thought. His novel, Emile: or, On Education, which he considered his most important work, is a seminal treatise on the education of the whole person for citizenship. His sentimental novel, Julie, ou la nouvelle Héloïse, was of great importance to the development of pre-Romanticism and romanticism in fiction. Rousseau's autobiographical writings: his Confessions, which initiated the modern autobiography, and his Reveries of a Solitary Walker were among the pre-eminent examples of the late 18th-century movement known as the "Age of Sensibility", featuring an increasing focus on subjectivity and introspection that has characterized the modern age. Rousseau also made important contributions to music as a theorist. During the period of the French Revolution, Rousseau was the most popular of the philosophes among members of the Jacobin Club. He was interred as a national hero in the Panthéon in Paris, in 1794, 16 years after his death. A GREAT BOOK! BUT NOT FOR ENGLISH READERS!!!!!
I am a fanatic mathematical fan of Euler,to me his the greatest mathematician of all time. Of course, you would challange me. How about Newton, Gauss, and Archimedes, the universally claimed 3 of the greatest mathematician of all time. But read more, I give Euler this honor is including all other aspects of his life, and not just on maths and his achievement. Euler enjoyed his life, his maths, he adventured maths, even with one eye blind followed by the other,he never gave up. Even under the bad relationship with Fredrich the Great, he still did what he should do and never involved in politics. He enjoyed his family, he was approachable, he helped mathematicians of new generation. ( He held up his paper on calculus of variation in order to give full credit to Lagrange was just one aspect ). He was humble, he almost had good relationship with all his contempory mathmaticians. ( except a tiny quarrel with D"alembert on the problem of vibrating string ).
Can you find another scientist or mathematician in history like him ? But why I do not recommend this for english readers?? THIS IS BECAUSE THE BOOK IS NOT WRITTEN IN ENGLISH. This volume, together with Volumes 22 and 23 of the same series, contains Euler's contributions to the theory of the movement of the sun and especially of the moon. Time and again Euler worked on the program of applying Newton's principles of mechanics to improve our unterstanding of the movement of the celestial bodies. Euler's monumental "Theoria motuum Lunae nova methodo pertractata" of 1772 (his "Second Theory of the Moon") forms Volume 22, whereas Volume 23 mainly contains his early Astronomical Tables and his "First Theory of the Moon" of 1753. In the present volume the reader will find early papers by Euler pertaining to the preparation of his Astronomical Tables, a series of articles written between his two Theories of the Moon, and finally three substantial essays closely related to his "Second Theory of the Moon".
