Excerpt: Anthony Windham Jones also known as Windham Jones or Wyndham Jones (1879 - 23 October 1959) was a Welsh international rugby union half back who played club rugby for Cardiff and Mountain Ash. Jones was capped just once for Wales, but this was during the 1905 Home Nations Championship, making Jones a Grand Slam winning player. Windham Jones came to note as a rugby player when he played for Cardiff during the 1902/03 season. Despite playing for one of Wales' premier clubs, by 1905 he was representing Mountain Ash, a second tier club of the period. It was while playing for Mountain Ash that Windham Jones was given his one and only Welsh international cap. The 1905 Home Nations Championship saw Wales win the Championship and the Grand Slam, and in the opening game of the tournament, Swansea pairing Dicky Owen and Dick Jones, the 'Dancing Dicks' were the preferred half back option. Jones was injured after the English game and was replaced by another Swansea player Billy Trew. When Trew also retired injured, Windham Jones was given an opportunity to fill his role in the half back position. Windham Jones was central to both Welsh tries, scoring the first under the posts after dummying through the Irish defence; and then setting up the second try for Teddy Morgan. Even with a key role in his first international game, he was replaced for the next year's Championship by Percy Bush, and never represented Wales again. Excerpt: Sir Samuel Walker Griffith GCMG QC, (21 June 1845 9 August 1920) was an Australian politician, Premier of Queensland, Chief Justice and a principal author of the Constitution of Australia. Griffith was born in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, the younger son of the Rev. Edward Griffith, a Congregational minister and his wife, Mary, second daughter of Peter Walker. Although of Welsh extraction, his forebears for at least three generations were natives of England. The family migrated to Queensland when Samuel was eight. He was educated at schools in Ipswich, Sydney, Maitland and Brisbane (from 1860), towns where his father was a minister, then at the University of Sydney, where he graduated B.A. in 1863 with first-class honours in classics, mathematics and natural science. During his course he was awarded the Cooper and Barker scholarships and other prizes. On his return to Brisbane he studied law and was articled to Arthur Macalister, in one of whose ministries Griffith afterwards had his first portfolio. In 1865 he gained the T. S. Mort Travelling Fellowship. Travelling to Europe he spent some of his time in Italy, and became much attached to the Italian people and their literature. Many years after he was to become the first Australian translator of Dante (The Inferno of Dante Alighieri in 1908). Griffith then studied law in Brisbane, where he was called to the bar in 1867. Excerpt: Daniel Evans, (born 31 July 1973), is a Welsh actor and director. Evans started acting early in life, going to the Urdd Eisteddfod, and beginning to compete there from the age of 5 or 6, as well as going to many amateur productions. He realised it was what he wanted to do aged 8, and aged 17, he won the Richard Burton Memorial Prize at the National Eisteddfod of Wales. A year later, he won the Chair at the Urdd Eisteddfod. He attended Ysgol Gyfun Rhydfelen near Pontypridd, a Welsh language secondary school which has nurtured many actors. He is openly gay and has been out his entire career. Evans trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama from 1991-1994, but joined the Royal Shakespeare Company before completing his course. With the RSC he had small roles in Coriolanus and Henry V, before playing Lysander when Adrian Noble's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream toured in New York and on Broadway. He appeared in the controversial play Cardiff East at the Royal National Theatre in 1997, and as the title role in Peter Pan, alongside Ian McKellen and Claudie Blakley. Directed by Trevor Nunn, he appeared in The Merchant of Venice and Troilus and Cressida, and was then cast as the hero in the operetta Candide, which also starred Simon Russell Beale. It was his first singing role, and saw him nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical in 2000. As well as Shakespeare and traditional theatre, Evans had starred in several more experimental plays.
