5-0 out of 5 stars thomas cook of rhode island

Great work! Invaluable tool for Cook research. Mrs.Fiske has done
an outstanding job!

5-0 out of 5 stars Careful primary research clarifies some previous 'knowledge'
Mrs. Fiske has carefully sorted through early documents and developed a thorough and friendly history of the Thomas Cook line. She presents new thoughts, supports them with evidence, and makes this book a very valuable resource for those working anywhere along this line. Two fat! volumes may be obtained (be sure to tell Amazon which, or both, that you want) and you'll learn more than you ever dreamed possible about the Cooks. There are a few errors as can be expected in a work of this size (Grandpa's middle name was Orlando, not Oleander) but they appear minor in relationship to the vast number of entries. ... "Two Arms and Three Elbows", "The Day the Python Pooped" and many other favorite stories for teen-age kids and their parents lie in wait for readers. Following, maybe stumbling, in the footsteps of James Thurber, Robert Fulghum, and William Bennett, the author tells stories about raising kids and being raised, about strange science and even stranger history.Written to be edifying, the stories are true, they have points (sometimes morals), and they entertain. They are perfect for the school teacher who has a few minutes to spend between lessons or until the bell rings, and wants a story fo rhis or her students. These are stories about envy, gun safety, the terrors of parenthood, racism, the pledge to our flag, uses of magnetism, and digging up a privy. What more could a person ask for? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars HISTORICAL FICTION WITH PLENTY OF HUMOR AND DETAIL
Fiske tells the true story of his great-grandfather, Jim Walker, who was assassinated in Owen County, Kentucky in 1874 for standing up to the KKK. Fiske tells the story from the point of view of a German-born government agent who travels to the area incognito to investigate rumors of Klan activity. Fiske tells the story in historical novel form, but the period detail and facts about the murder are thoroughly accurate. Readers who enjoy "The Courage Place" should also read Fiske's historical novel "A Time to Heal," which concerns another of his ancestors who was shot to death on a public street in a small Missouri town in 1856, also for his stand on civil rights. ... Taken from files in courthouses and old newspaper is the evidence of a pre-Civil War conspiracy to murder anybody who might stand in the way of pro-slavery forces in western Missouri. Their goal was to have Kansas enter the Union as a slave state. One hundred and forty-four years later, wealthy, single businessman Stokely Towles breaks a leg and pauses from his schedule to recover from surgery. To take his mind off the pain he begins researching his family history. It isn't long before he comes across the name of Henry Vallandingham, who was murdered in a small town in Missouri in 1856. Strange dreams guide Stokely to find out what really happened. He meets attratictive Ariadne Edwards and together they untangle the web of events that led to his ancestor's death. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An intensely autobiographical mystery
Thomas Fiske is a retired manufacturing executive who had a chance to investigate some family history after breaking both legs while falling up some stairs. While he was recuperating, he had an opportunity to visit the homes of his great grandparents in Kentucky. He unraveled the mystery of an ancestor's death and produced this very readable story for public consumption.

In this intensely autobiographical mystery, single businessman Stokley Towles takes a sabbatical from his career when a broken leg lands him in the hospital and on the disabled list. While he is recuperating, he has a series of dreams involving conversations with his grandmother about a murder of an ancestor named Henry Vallandingham. Vallandingham was murdered in a small town in Missouri in 1856, just before the outbreak of the Civil War. Towles begins his own investigation, and is joined by Ariadne Edwards, who turns out to be a DEA agent investigating smuggling in the area. When they are followed and harassed by some of the locals, the journey into genealogy becomes something else:

"'What do you want?' Stoke said as he tried to get in front of Ari. He thought she might be able to get her gun out of her purse. But the men didn't like what he was doing. 'Stay where we can see you both,' the tall man commanded. Stoke stood still. 'Is this a robbery?' Ari asked the men. 'For the moment,' the man said, and added, 'so gimme your purse.' He handed The gun to his partner."

With his expertise in genealogy, Fiske is able to piece together an amazing story that reflects on a much wider arena than just an old family murder mystery. With the start of the Civil War, Fiske uncovers a conspiracy by pro-slavery advocates to murder anyone advocating for abolition of slavery in western Missouri. With the prize of Kansas as a possible slave state, these men would stop at nothing to preserve their lifestyle. A Time To Heal is a wonderfully crafted historical-mystery that is timeless in its conception. Mr. Fiske has offered an invaluable lesson to not only the children he substitute teaches, but to the world in general. A great read!... ... Read more

Product Description
THE volume called Higher Mathematics, the first edition of which was published in 1896, contained eleven chapters by eleven authors, each chapter being independent of the others, but all supposing the reader to have at least a mathematical training equivalent to that given in classical and engineering colleges. The publication of that volume is now discontinued and the chapters are issued in separate form. In these reissues it will generally be found that the monographs are enlarged by additional articles or appendices which either amplify the former presentation or record recent advances. This plan of publication has been arranged in order to meet the demand of teachers and the convenience of classes, but it is also thought that it may prove advantageous to readers in special lines of mathematical literature. It is the intention of the publishers and editors to add other monographs to the series from time to time, if the call for the same seems to warrant it. A

This story of heroic American physician Tad Benson is true. Tad really spent nine years of his life in and out of the USSR during the Space Race, helping to keep Soviet cosmonauts alive. Despite official denials-to this day-that the U.S. had a man inside the USSR, Benson did his humanitarian work as a physician and scientist behind the scenes and without recognition. He was a wonderful friend who began to tell me of his secret career when he found that his life would soon end. Grudgingly, US Intel agencies have admitted that Tad was one of their own during the Space Race years, but little else. International politics prevent me from revealing his true name. That is why this book is a novel and not a history. ... Read more

Product Description
This book is not an advanced engineering text. Rather, it is a practical presentation with traffic accident reconstruction principles presented in a simple, understandable manner so that the reader will easily retain these important concepts. The engineering principles involved are introduced at the elementary level, and in many cases equations used in freshman physics are derived. The authors believe that the derivations are presented in the simplest manner possible so that the reader will retain this material. The book is the result of an effort to compile over a period of years useful forensic engineering data, information, and analytical techniques over and above those taught to non-engineers. Many of the mathematical treatments are original. In general, the book reflects the authors’ combined over forty years experience of forensic investigations involving thousands of cases. It offers something for everyone interested in forensic engineering. In the new second edition, Chapters 3 to 5 have been substantially modified, and the remainder of the text has been edited to bring its various parts up to date. The experienced investigator will find a wealth of new ideas and relationships to fill in gaps in his knowledge and reinforce his analytical approaches. Those starting new in this work will have an advantage on their competition after studying this material. For the non-technical reader, most of the book is eminently readable. To an investigator, attorney, or insurance adjuster with only a nodding acquaintance with freshman physics, the book should be totally comprehensible. ... Read more

How did Caltech contribute to the Atomic Bomb project during WWII? Who was supposed to have run the project instead of J. Robert Oppenheimer? Why did this famous institution become a rocket factory and build the famous China Lake facility? Ploughshares gives little-known one-time secret answers to these questions as it recalls how civilians lived their lives and contributed to the winning of WWII. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No Matter How Much You Know About WW2, This Book Will Surprise You
Fiske's book is a fascinatingly detailed examination of an often overlooked topic: how civilians (particularly the scientists at Caltech) helped win World War Two. Using an impressive variety of sources, Fiske reveals much information that was top secret at the time. The book covers a huge range of subjects in a very readable style, including capsule glimpses into the popular culture of the 1920s-1940s.

5-0 out of 5 stars History Made Real
I grew up in Pasadena and was a teenager when WW2 started.I knew where Cal Tech was but, at that time, did not know a thing about the important work they were doing. This book is extremely readable and makes history come alive. Mr. Fiske puts all the pieces in order, with many details unknown to the general public at that time. He makes the war story personal through the lives of "Mel" and Lannea Melzian.I highly recommend "Ploughshares into Swords".

4-0 out of 5 stars G-R-E-A-T !!!
You know, of course, that there are actually 1,000's of books about WWII. But this book---Ploughshares into Swords---is distinctive, perhaps unique.

It does not report the politics, maschinations, documents, intrigues of leaders, lives if VIP's, or such. Rather, it "evolkes the lives of civilians during the period of 1940-45, and what they did to win a war in Europe and a war in Asia at the same time." That's the "goal" of this book, as stated by the authors on page 11 of their introduction to the book.

And the authors attain that goal admirably! Here you'll read about the Melzian family--he an engineer and she a talented artist--and what they did to help America win its conflicts. And you'll also read bits about dozens of other such people, few of whom ever were mentioned in news reports.

This is a book you'll most likely think about for months after you've read it!

Enjoy! ! ... Read more

From the author: Composite samples consisting of ferromagnetic asymmetric particles incorporated into a polyolefin binder were injection molded using custom designed molds which produced preferential fiber orientations. The relative magnetic permeability values of the composites were measured as a function of the filler volume fraction, injection rate, gate diameter, temperature, aspect ratio of the fibers, and fiber orientation. Fiber orientation was affected by the molding conditions and controlled the relative magnetic permeability of the composites. The degree of fiber orientation was significantly affected by the size of the opening (gate) to the mold, or by the mold geometry going from an edge-gated cylindrical to a center-gated disk cavity. Relative permeability values of the composites were observed to increase when the fiber orientation and the applied field were parallel to one another. For instance, highly aligned composite samples exhibited up to 30% greater relative permeability values compared to those samples which exhibit fiber orientation distributions approaching a random distribution. To our knowledge this is the first study that provides data linking the fiber orientation distribution functions of ferromagnetic asymmetric particles to the relative magnetic permeability values of injection molded composites.
