Product Description
Charles Fox has composed more than 100 motion picture and television scores, among them the themes of many iconic series, including Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, Love, American Style, and Love Boat. Twice nominated for the Academy Award and a two-time Emmy winner, Fox has also written music for the concert hall and the ballet. Among the hundreds of songs he has written is the Grammy Award-winning 'Killing Me Softly with His Song,' a number one record in just about every country in the world, by two different artists: Roberta Flack in 1973 and the Fugees, 20 years later. In this memoir, Fox recounts his development as a musician, beginning with his formal music education in Paris. From letters he wrote home between 1959 and 1961, Fox recounts his studies under the tutelage of the most renowned music composition teacher of the 20th century, Nadia Boulanger, whose influence Fox carried throughout his entire professional career. Following his return to the states, Fox describes the cornerstone events of his musical and personal life. He reflects on the highlights of his career, working with some of the greatest names in entertainment, film, television, and records, including Jim Croce, Barry Manilow, Lena Horne, and Fred Astaire. Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2004 and a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Composers & Lyricists, Fox's memoir is a compelling story of a musician and composer whose work continues to entertain and inspire listeners around the world. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely lovely biography - A true talent
Charles Fox is a musician who began his career in Paris.Almost immediately, the reader is brought onto the propeller-driven plane where he and other students would be attending the Conservatoire de Musique. What follows are some wonderful chapters that are the actual letters from Paris that Charles Fox sent home in the years 1959-1961.The letters offer a fantastically intricate and fun look at how Charles Fox became what he became.

The love of music can be "seen" washing over this man like a security blanket that would keep him comforted for the rest of his life. The people and instructors that he met while training in that unbelievably gorgeous town completely draw the reader in, especially his tutor, Nadia Boulanger, who is, to this day, regarded as one of the most renowned and expert composition teachers of the twentieth century. She was certainly the main focus of Fox's life, and he carried her wisdom and talent throughout his career. After reading the pages devoted to Paris, I can tell you that all readers will want to live, eat, and breathe, this time period, and wish with all their hearts that they could follow in Mr. Fox's footsteps.

From the very intricate and lovely beginning of this memoir, we are then brought back to the U.S. and are instantly amazed and, more than a little star struck, by the highlights of this man's career.I mean...really, guys and gals, Mr. Fox has worked with everyone from Barry Manilow to Lena Horne, and even Fred Astaire. He worked on movies, television scores - everything that a composer would kill to accomplish. He is the man behind some of the most recognizable works in history.I mean...who doesn't know the theme to the Love Boat? And, come on, Laverne and Shirley?Happy Days?God, I practically grew up on the compositions of this amazing musician. Not only that, but the Grammy Award-winning song - "Killing Me Softly with His Song" - was not only a big deal in the 1970's coming out of Roberta Flack's mouth; but also, twenty years later, the Fugees decided to resurrect the fabulous words that this man so effortlessly put on paper.

I not only recommend this wonderful story (with great pictures, by the way) to musicians, composers, and people desperately trying to make their musical dreams come true, but I also recommend this bio to all readers in general. Not only does this man represent a piece of our history, but his life and his writing are truly entertaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book
Virtually every line in this book contains material recommendations regarding contract drafting. All lawyers should read this book at start of career and keep it handy. This book is hard to put down.

4-0 out of 5 stars Especially Good for Financing and Acquisitions Contracts
This is a good book on contract drafting, which I recommend if you write contracts dealing with financing and acquisitions, which is the author's specialty.

For a more comprehensive resource on contract drafting, I recommend Manual of Style for Contract Drafting, Second Edition by Ken Adams. That book, and Ken's web site AdamsDrafting are, in my opinion, the best sources available for advice on contract drafting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fantastic
My only regret is not reading this book earlier in my career. For all first years and law students, it is a must read.If you are a transactional attorney, this book is a great resource.

Charles Fox deserves an award for creating a road map for junior associates.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the new lawyer on contracts drafting and negotiating
I am a new attorney who just started practicing as a transactional lawyer. I ordered 14 books on this subject. There is no other book that summarized the contracts writing process and the relevant set of legal skills that help in it like this book.
I learned how to darft contracts by doing it while working for a large software company in Seattle. Since I became an attorney, the process became even more interesting (I had many reference points) as I now have the legal skills to add. This helped me combine the hands-on knowledge with the legal theories I learned in school to improve my drafting skills.
The language used is so readable; analogies are thought provoking; techniques explained are useful; and review and interpretation guides are invaluable. Great resource for a new lawyer!

The first steps to greatness

The blood tide that swept away the Bourbons in the terror of the French revolution also heralded the Revolutionary Wars in which Republican France not only sought to spread its doctrine through Europe, but also had to initially contend with French Royalist forces who fought to re-establish the old regime. In 1793, the coastal town of Toulon in Southern France lay under siege. Its defenders were French monarchists supported by Spanish, Sardinian and British forces. Outside the defences, among the guns of his beloved artillery, was a 24 year old major in the Republican Army. His genius for war was here given free rein and was instrumental in breaking the siege and bringing about a decisive victory for the cause he espoused. Recognition of his achievement elevated him swiftly to the rank of brigadier general and placed him at the hub of French power in a Europe then seething with unrest and ripe for sweeping change. That young man was, of course, Napoleon Bonaparte. What may have occurred had anyone realised that this single man was capable of overturning regimes and bathing the Continent in fire and bloodshed until his eventual downfall over 20 years in the future we may only speculate. This book explains that pivotal moment in the history of the Western world as the man who would become an emperor took his first steps on the path to greatness. Available in softcover and hardcover with dust jacket. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Geared for classical mechanics
Good books on the calculus of variations are not thick on the ground, and this one is pretty good. It is organised around explicating Hamiltonian mechanics, but with mathematical rigor and clarity. Why not 5 stars then? Some proofs skip a lot of steps. There are not a lot of examples. The typesetting is from 509 years ago, with equations and so on in the text not on a separate line. There are few diagrams.

If your interest is in physics this is a FAR better book to choose than Sagan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on the Calculus of Variations
Thorough, concise, enjoyable and CHEAP book on the Calculus of variations. One of the few mathematics books that is simultaneously rigorous and entertaining. Illustrated with many examples and applications, drawn fromphysics and engineering. The proofs are brisk, though there is enough thereto guide you on your way to complete understanding. A DEFINITE read for anymathematician or scientist! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great background reference
I have been reading novels set in Victorian England and had been puzzled by some of the references and words peculiar to that age. This book was essential to my understanding of the society mores, taboos, and rules. It greatly enhanced my enjoyment of the books of Anne Perry.Reading this reference was enjoyable, and the glossary was the biggest help when reading the Anne Perry novels.Well worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding 130 page glossary makes this a worthwhile purchase, main reading text just average
What Jane Austen Ate and Charles Dickens Knew
One of my favorite authors is Jane Austen (especially Pride and Prejudice and Northanger Abbey).I also enjoy North and South by Elizabeth Gaskins, and several other novels set in (and written in) the 1800s.Of course, much that the 19th-century British author shares of life in that time and place is mentioned very matter-of-factly and without much explanation, as their readers wouldn't have needed it. But, often the modern reader misses nuances, and the reading experience is richer if they can understand these details better, thus, my interest in this book.

On the whole, this book gives a good overview of many facets of life in 19th-century England, while maintaining a conversational style and sharing quotes and examples from many novels of the day. There are explanations on a wide array of topics from British currency to social status to debt to occupations to transportation to clothing, etc; these are relatively brief but, in general, decent overviews.

There were some topics that I felt were covered rather inadequately.British monarchs during this time merited only 1/4 page, which allowed only a mere listing of the dates of their reign, and the sharing of the brief fact that George III was insane for his last 10 years and his son served as prince regent.I thought that there should have been at least a 1-paragraph overview of each ruler. The clothing section had some nice information, but almost all in written form.Additional sketches (there is only one of a crinoline) would have helped to make this subject matter clearly, especially for those who are more visual.

For those who do enjoy 19th-century novels, the main part of the book is good to sit down and read sometime to give a broader overview. The portion of the book likely to be most useful while reading is the glossary. It is a whopping 135 pages with almost any term the reader may be unfamiliar with and a brief explanation.A few examples:

"armoire--A big clothes cupboard that was either freestanding or set into the wall."

"crush hat--So called because that was what one could do to it.Also called an opera hat or Gibus. There were springs inside so that when one wore it to the opera one could remove it and fold it up flat."

"housewife (pronounced "huzzif")--A small case for carrying around little clothes-mending items like needles and thread.Sometimes spelled "huswife."

"packet--A ship carrying mail regularly from one place to another and also, sometimes passengers."

"sweetmeat--A sweetmeat was a candy, particularly a candied fruit, although also a hard, fruit-flavored candy."

I'd give the main reading portion of the book 3.5 stars and am not sure whether I'd round up or down. But the glossary takes this up to 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5, as it makes the book into an invaluable reference to have on hand while reading 19th century British literature. There is also a helpful 9-page bibliography for those interested in further reading on 19th-century Britain, as well as a 13-page index.I would definitely recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful history book!
As a huge fan of Victorian literature as well as Victorian history, I must say that this is one of the best accounts of history I've ever read. Entertaining as well as accurate information make for a great book! As a high school student, I bought this book to supplement my textbook in AP European History, and it had some great info on the social trends of the 19th century. Great, and highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars What We Once Knew...
It is easy to forget, in reading the novels of Jane Austen or Charles Dickens, that their characters inhabited a world almost 200 years removed from our own world of prepackaged food, mechanical aids, and information technology.Daniel Pool's delightful "What Jane Austen Ate and Charles Dickens Knew" is a fascinating attempt to close the knowledge gap about the facts of daily life in 19th Century England.

In a series of short topical essays and an extended glossary of key terms, Pool examines some relevant facts about the 19th Century. He starts with the basics of currency, the calendar, and measurements, then moves on to the public world with its hierarchies, classes, and customs. He discusses transportation, country living, and the private details of everyday living. This book is not exhaustive in its coverage, but it was certainly both enlightening and entertaining to this Jane Austen fan.

"What Jane Austen Ate and Charles Dickens Knew" is very highly recommended to Brit Lit fans, who can enjoy reading it straight through or using it as a reference for t19th Century terms and conditions no longer obvious to 21st Century readers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but uncited information (sometimes wrong!)
An interesting book, but the author doesn't tell us where any of the information comes from. I don't know how many inaccuracies crept in, but I was more than startled when he explained that a mangle - the hand-cranked squeezer that was used for removing excess water before hanging up your hand-washed laundry - was in fact used after IRONING to make your clothing super flat. I don't think so..... ... Read more

Product Description
Charles James Fox was one of the most colorful figures in eighteenth-century politics.Notorious for the excesses of his private life, he was at the same time one of the leading politicians of his generation, dominating the Whig party and polite society. As the political rival of Pitt the Younger and the intellectual rival of Edmund Burke, his views on the major issues of the day--the American War of Independence, the French Revolution, parliamentary reform--formed the character of Whiggery in his own time and for years to come.Fox's historical reputation has been hotly disputed. Some have hailed him as one of the founding fathers of Radicalism, others have dismissed him as an irritating and irresponsible impediment to the statesmanship of Pitt.Mitchell's scholarly biography shows that in many ways Fox was a politician through circumstance, not kinship and friendship which to an astonishing degree dictated Fox's politics, and offers striking new assessments of Whiggery and its most potent personality. This penetrating and readable study reveals the man and his mind, and sets Fox firmly within the political and social context of the late eighteenth century. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars First-class treatment of the subject
After finishing this book, it is hard to imagine there can be anything left to say about Charles James Fox. The familiar picture emerges of a politician who didn't have the skills or temperament of Pitt the Youngerand hence was in opposition for most of his career. Yet Mitchell also makestwo very interesting observations. First, Fox often preferred his privatesocial life to politics. Did he, in fact, spend more time at the race trackand at his London club than at the House of Commons? Secondly, Fox was lessof a radical than most of his contemporaries thought. He was not, forinstance, especially keen on far-reaching parliamentary reform. A bigthumbs-up for this biography, not least for quoting verbatim from thestrong language of certain original sources! ... Read more

Product Description

This book provides new factual material on Charles Darwin, following many years of research into Darwin’s relationship to his cousin William Darwin Fox. It is a biographical and historical account of the letters exchanged by these two men and the diaries of W D Fox have never been accessed before. The relationship between Darwin and Fox has been acknowledged as a major biographical source on Darwin. Here the life of Fox is carefully pieced together and compared and contrasted with that of Darwin. Since Darwin and Fox were undergraduates together at Christ’s College, Cambridge, and corresponded with each other for the rest of their lives, dying within two years of each other, the diaries allow us a vivid insight into the unique relationship of these two naturalists and family friends. Both were studying to be clergymen of the Church of England, when Darwin was offered a place on The Beagle. Thereafter their lives diverged, as Fox became the country parson that Darwin might have been. Never the less, Fox supplied many facts to Darwin, which were used in the "Origin of Species" and later books. The views and opinions exchanged between these two men greatly enlarge our appreciation of the life and contribution of Charles Darwin at a profoundly personal level.

This book fills a large gap and will be very timely for the Darwin Bicentenary in 2009

Charles Fox and Jason Wolf have brought together leading researchers to produce a cutting-edge primer introducing readers to the major concepts in modern evolutionary genetics. This book spans the continuum of scale, from studies of DNA sequence evolution through proteins and development to multivariate phenotypic evolution, and the continuum of time, from ancient events that lead to current species diversity to the rapid evolution seen over relatively short time scales in experimental evolution studies. Chapters are accessible to an audience lacking extensive background in evolutionaryy genetics but also current and in-depth enough to be of value to established researchers in evolution biology. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent information.
I'm not well versed in biological knowledge.I never have taken a chemistry course and I only have high school level biology education.I know little of genetics. But, I've learned much from this book. The reading is a bit over my head in some ways, but plain enough in others.I have read into it to learn more about the processes of evolution at work.It is an engaging and exciting read.

I won't bother readers with my rudimentary understanding.I recognize that I'm sort of out of my league here. But, I believe that knowledge is precious and that everything we can do to expand our knowledge is important, and thusly worth my time. When theory is applied to the practical mechanics a booming picture of the evolutionary process is powerfully displayed.

You may have no interest in technical knowledge concerning biological formations, but I urge you to at least consider expanding your knowledge base with real information.Don't buy popular level books which only cover someone else's agenda to promote their own view of the world.Actually take the time to learn about the real information, the real world. You won't understand evolution simply because someone else said so.But, actually looking at what happens in evolution brings you all the more closer to real understanding.

That's the goal, right? ... Read more

The main goal of this book is to encourage and formalize the infusion of evolutionary thinking into mainstream conservation biology. It reviews the evolutionary foundations of conservation issues, and unifies conceptual and empirical advances in evolutionary conservation biology. The book can be used either as a primary textbook or as a supplementary reading in an advanced undergraduate or graduate level course - likely to be called Conservation Biology or in some cases Evolutionary Ecology. The focus of chapters is on current concepts in evolution as they pertain to conservation, and the empirical study of these concepts. The balanced treatment avoids exhaustive reviews and overlapping duplication among the chapters. Little background in genetics is assumed of the reader. ... Read more
