Product Description
In this biography of Sir Cyril Fox, Charles Scott-Fox discovers that his father wasan extraordinary man, a creative and wide-ranging scholar, an inspiring teacher, an effective administrator, a humanist, and an influential archaeologist during the golden years of 20th-century archaeology.

Fox left school at age 16 to become an apprentice at a nursery garden; he became interested in archaeology as a hobby, but within several years of entering Cambridge at the mature age of 36 he had become an internationally renowned scholar. Fox's The Archaeology of the Cambridge Region (1923) revolutionized the study of British archaeology. His innovation was to bring a geographical approach to the analysis of standard archaeological distribution maps, relating patterns of culture to the physical environment, and producing in his own words ?economic history?. He developed the geographical approach in multiple editions of The Personality of Britain: its influence on inhabitant and invader in prehistoric and early historic times, and although many of the assumptions that Fox made about the environment were soon refuted as overly deterministic, this essay had a profound influence on both archaeological and geographical thought. Fox soon moved from the university to the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff. In parallel with the story of the man is the story of the museum, a cultural institution which had pretensions of serving a nation but which at the end of the First World War was literally bankrupt. By the end of his term as Director in 1948 it had become a truly national museum, and had even produced a daughter museum at St. Fagans to house the Folk collection that Fox had ardently nurtured throughout his period in office. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Oh, please quit whining
Prince Charles wrote this book for one reason. He wrote it because Princess Diana had just accomplished having a best selling book secretly written about her by Andrew Morton and Charles wanted to make the public believe that he was the victim and not Diana as he so often points out in this poor excuse for a book. All this book manages to do is show us what a sniveling wimp Prince Charles is.We get to read how he was constantly harrassed by his father, Prince Philip, as he was growing up.

What he doesn't tell us is the story of his affair with Camilla while still married to Diana. He also doesn't tell us about the constant verbal and mental abuse he imposed on Diana by making snide remarks about her weight issues.Even though I only gave this book one star, I'd still recommend you read it if only to see what a whining liar Charles actually is.Since the death of Princess Diana has set so many records straight especially about his constant belittling of her (which is not in his book), his boring life style which she had to put up with day in and day out (which he doesn't mention in his book) and many other things, this book actually makes me sick because now we all know what a bunch of bull it actually is.And if the truth be known, Prince Charles married Diana for one reason and one reason only.He needed a baby machine and Diana was perfect for the job per his dad, Prince Philip.THIS fact is also, NOT in his book! ... Product Description
"Reefer Charlie" Fox rode the rails from 1928 to 1939;from 1939 to 1965 he hitched rides in automobiles and traveled byfoot. From Indiana to British Columbia, from Arkansas to Texas, fromUtah to Mexico, he was part of the grand hobo tradition that has allbut passed away from American life.

He camped in hobo jungles, slept under bridges and in sand houses atrailroad yards, ate rattlesnake meat, fresh California grapes, andfish speared by the Indians of the Northwest. He quickly learned boththe beauty and the dangers of his chosen way of life. One lessonlearned early on was that there are distinct differences among hoboes, tramps, and bums. As the all-time king of hoboes, Jeff Davis, used tosay, "Hoboes will work, tramps won't, and bums can't."

Tales of an American Hobo is a lasting legacy to conventional society, teaching about a bygone era of American history and a rare breed ofhumanity who chose to live by the rails and on the road. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Tales of An American Hobo review
Tales of an American Hobo was a collection of short stories about the life of a Hobo. This book taught me a lot of lessons in life one being, "Treat everyone with the respect that you would liked to be treated with."The hobo in this book was always disrespected and discriminated against in his life. The cops in the towns that he traveled to would tell him to leave and never come back. They didn't even give him a chance to start over and get his life going. He meet some nice people on his journey. He was as kind as possible to them and never took more than he would need to survive. There were the other people who tricked him into thinking that they where nice and gave him water that was bad and made him sick. ... A society so broad and strongly based that within its own borders it can safely permit absolute liberty of thought and speech; whose members are so numerous that they are able to believe, with some show of reason, that the interests of the State are identical with their own, and at the same time so privileged that they are sure to get the best of everything which is to be had, is a society uniting, as far as those members are concerned, most of the advantages and all the attractions both of a popular and an oligarchical form of government. It is in such societies that existence has been enjoyed most keenly, and that books have been written which communicate a sense of that enjoyment most vividly to posterity. The records of other periods may do more to illustrate the working of political forces and to clear up the problems of historical science ; the literature of other periods may be richer in wealth of thought and no... ... Product Description
This widely acclaimed work provides a lively counterbalance to the standard assessment-measurement-accountability prescriptions that have made showing you did your job more important than actually doing it. Now extensively revised, it articulates a postmodern theory of public administration that challenges the field to redirect its attention away from narrow, technique-oriented scientism, and toward democratic openness and ethics. The authors incorporate insights from thinkers like Rorty, Giddens, Derrida, and Foucault to recast public administration as an arena of decentered practices. In their framework, ideographic collisions and everyday impasses bring about political events that challenge the status quo, creating possibilities for social change. "Postmodern Public Administration" is an outstanding intellectual achievement that has rewritten the political theory of public administration. This new edition will encourage everyone who reads it to think quite differently about democratic governance. ... Read more
