Excerpt: Theodore Beza (Théodore de Bèze or de Besze) (June 24, 1519 October 13, 1605) was a French Protestant Christian theologian and scholar who played an important role in the early Reformation. A member of the monarchomaque movement who opposed absolute monarchy, he was a disciple of John Calvin and lived most of his life in Switzerland. Theodore Beza was born at Vezelay, in Burgundy, France. His father, Pierre de Beze, royal governor of Vezelay, descended from a Burgundian family of distinction; his mother, Marie Bourdelot, was known for her generosity. Beza's father had two brothers; Nicholas, who was member of Parliament at Paris; and Claude, who was abbot of the Cistercian monastery Froimont in the diocese of Beauvais. Nicholas, who was unmarried, during a visit to Vezelay was so pleased with Theodore that, with the permission of his parents, he took him to Paris to educate him there. From Paris, Theodore was sent to Orléans in December 1528 to receive instruction from the famous German teacher Melchior Wolmar. He was received into Wolmar's house, and the day on which this took place was afterward celebrated as a second birthday. Young Beza soon followed his teacher to Bo...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=40322 ... Read more

Product Description
In mathematics, more specifically general topology andmetric topology, a compact space is an abstractmathematical space in which, intuitively, whenever onetakes an infinite number of "steps" in the space, eventually one must get arbitrarily close to some otherpoint of the space. Thus a closed and bounded subset (suchas a closed interval or rectangle) of a Euclidean space iscompact because ultimately one's steps are forced to "bunchup" near a point of the set, a result known as the Bolzano? Weierstrass theorem, whereas Euclidean space itself is notcompact because one can take infinitely many equal steps inany given direction without ever getting very close to anyother point of the space. Apart from closed and boundedsubsets of Euclidean space, typical examples of compactspaces include spaces consisting not of geometrical pointsbut of functions. The term compact was introduced intomathematics by Maurice Fréchet in 1906 as a distillation ofthis concept. ... Read more

Product Description
In mathematics, the Fréchet derivative is a derivative defined on Banach spaces. Named after Maurice Fréchet, it is commonly used to formalize the concept of the functional derivative used widely in the calculus of variations. Intuitively, it generalizes the idea of linear approximation from functions of one variable to functions on Banach spaces. The Fréchet derivative should be contrasted to the more general Gâteaux derivative which is a generalization of the classical directional derivative. The Fréchet derivative has applications throughout mathematical analysis, and in particular to the calculus of variations and much of nonlinear analysis and nonlinear functional analysis. It has applications to nonlinear problems in physics, and in particular to quantum field theory. ... Read more
