Product Description
Evariste Galois' short life was lived against the turbulent background of the restoration of the Bourbons to the throne of France, the 1830 revolution in Paris and the accession of Louis-Phillipe. This new and scrupulously researched biography of the founder of modern algebra sheds much light on a life led with great intensity and a death met tragically under dark circumstances. Sorting speculation from documented fact, it offers the fullest and most exacting account ever written of Galois' life and work. It took more than seventy years to fully understand the French mathematician's first mémoire (published in 1846) which formulated the famous "Galois theory" concerning the solvability of algebraic equations by radicals, from which group theory would follow. Obscurities in his other writings - mémoires and numerous fragments of extant papers - persist and his ideas challenge mathematicians to this day. Thus scholars will welcome those chapters devoted specifically to explicating all aspects of Galois' work. A comprehensive bibliography enumerates studies by and also those about the mathematician. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The short life of Evariste Galois.
When asked, friends tell me that they think a mathematician or a scientist would typically have lived a long, and comfortable life. Perhaps that is so, but far from all the time: not now, not a hundred, or two hundred years ago. In mathematics, two romantic heros stand out, N. H. Abel, and Evariste Galois. Both lived at the start of the Nineteenth Century, and both died tragically, Galois in a duel.
The author Infeld is a romantic, and great writer; and he happens to also be a scientist. In addition to this book, Leopold Infeld wrote other captivating books. He was one of the first scientists who sucessfully intertwined science with popular writing. Infeld himself escaped from the Jewish Ghetto in Cracow, Poland, at the time of WWI. As he matured, he lived as a refugee scientist and writer, and miraculously overcame an incredible web of adversities that were stacked up against him.
Other books by Infeld include an autobiography, called "Quest", and a popular science book, "The Evolution of Physics", co-authored with Albert Einstein. Both books were bestsellers when they first appeared. I stumbled over Infeld's Galois biography purely by accident: Started to read late in the evening, were immediately hooked, and I didn't put the book down until the end, at sunrise. In the book we read about the last night of Galois's short life, the night before his fatal duel the next morning ("There is so little time" he wrote!). The young Galois hurriedly scribbled his original and profound ideas of matheamtics, and he gained imortality through the power of his insight. The life of Evariste Galois is a truly captivating drama, and written by one of the great story tellers. I am convinced that Infeld's stories, and his books, are less well known than they deserve to be.

While still inhis teens, he was able to determine a necessary andsufficient condition for a polynomial to be solvable byradicals, thereby solving a long-standing problem. His work laid the foundations for Galois theory, a major branch ofabstract algebra, and the subfield of Galoisconnections. He was the first to use the word "group" as a technical term inmathematics to represent a group of permutations. 5-0 out of 5 stars Best text on this subject
In my opinion this is without a doubt the best text on the subject. Do not be fooled by the small size of this book. It is lean, to the point and refreshingly laconic. A masterpiece!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a Self-Contained Book on Galois Theory
Galois Theory is in traditional mathematical format. The major elements of the book are definitions, lemmas, theorems, and proofs. The book introduces the major topics of Galois Theory. They are fields, extension fields, splitting fields, unique decomposition of polynomials into irreducible factors, solvable groups, permutation groups, and solution of equations by radical.

The last part of the book contains the major results of Galois Theory with proofs using the theorems from the second part of the book. They are theorem 5: The polynomial f(x) is solvable by radicals if and only if its group is solvable; theorem 4: The symmetric group G on n letters is not solvable for n > 4; theorem 6: The group of the general equation of degree n is the symmetric group on n letters. The general equation of degree n is not solvable by radicals if n > 4.

This is my second Galois Theory book. What impress me most is the involvement to prove the major results of Galois Theory such as theorem 5 and theorem 6. In order to prove the theorems, mathematicians invent many mathematical objects. They are root, group, symmetric group, solvable group, field, extension field, splitting field, Kummer field/extension, Abelian group, normal subgroup, normal extension, factor/quotient group, homomorph, fixed field, extension by radicals field, and more. Nowadays, we put all these objects under the domain of abstract algebra.

The book is certainly not self-contained because one would need an abstract algebra textbook for reference to the mathematical objects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Artin is the man
Any student (graduate or undergraduate) who is learning Galois theory will benefit greatly from reading this book. Artin has a very elegant style of writing and many parts of the book read like a novel. At its current price, there's no reason to not buy this book; you may actually want to buy a few extra copies as they make great gifts and/or stocking stuffers.

I would also recommend Artin's Geometric Algebra.

4-0 out of 5 stars the source!
This is modern Galois Theory, straight from the horse's mouth! Galois Theory is taught today using field extensions rather than by actually solving polynomials, students also learn to view a field extension as a vector space over the smaller field; both of these things were pioneered by Artin. The book also has short, clear proofs of all the main theorems. The only problem is that there are no problems to work on, so I have to say this is only a good reference for Galois Theory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Succinct exposition of modern Galois theory by a pioneer.
Emil Artin's short book gets a mention in most texts on
Galois theory. It is very short - only 60 odd pages. Yet
it is a very clear, complete and readable account of the
essential elements of modern Galois theory. It is based
on lectures he gave over 50 years ago but you might think
it was written only yesterday and is comprehensible to
anyone familiar with current abstract algebra terminology.
And the price makes it a bargain. There are no worked
examples, exercises or index here. ... Read more

Product Description
In abstract algebra, a finite field or Galois field (so named in honor of Évariste Galois) is a field that contains only finitely many elements. Finite fields are important in number theory, algebraic geometry, Galois theory, cryptography, and coding theory. The finite fields are classified by size; there is exactly one finite field up to isomorphism of size pk for each prime p and positive integer k. Each finite field of size q is the splitting field of the polynomial xq - x, and thus the fixed field of the Frobenius endomorphism which takes x to xq. Similarly, the multiplicative group of the field is a cyclic group. Wedderburn's little theorem states that the Brauer group of a finite field is trivial, so that every finite division ring is a finite field. Finite fields have applications in many areas of mathematics and computer science, including coding theory, LFSRs, modular representation theory, and the groups of Lie type. Finite fields are an active area of research, including recent results on the Kakeya conjecture and open problems on the size of the smallest primitive root. ... Read more

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! In mathematics, more specifically in abstract algebra, Galois theory, named after Évariste Galois, provides a connection between field theory and group theory. Using Galois theory, certain problems in field theory can be reduced to group theory, which is in some sense simpler and better understood. Originally Galois used permutation groups to describe how the various roots of a given polynomial equation are related to each other. The modern approach to Galois theory, developed by Richard Dedekind, Leopold Kronecker and Emil Artin, among others, involves studying automorphisms of field extensions. Further abstraction of Galois theory is achieved by the theory of Galois connections. ... Read more

He was four times President of the council of ministers of the Third Republic, twice consecutively. Product Description
