5-0 out of 5 stars They used this book at my hospital.
I bought this book because I saw a copy lying around the ICU and flipped through it. It's a great reference text if you need to know how to do something. I actually have it as bedside reading and it does that job poorly because it reads like a manual rather than a book. Also, despite Dr Marino's credentials, he is only one man and is of one opinion and he gives many recommendations that are contrary to current protocol (he also gives reasons and references as to why his way is better). I like his "advantages and disadvantages" evaluations for each procedure/drug/treatment.

4-0 out of 5 stars icu book
the book has excellent summaries of pathophys behind what we see/diagnose/measure/do in the icu. the book does have significant drawbacks, though, namely that it is highly biased towards the author's occasionally contraversial opinions. my attendings (all critical care experts) have debated some of his recommendations. also, with the most recent version published in 1997 (and knowing that the acutal revisions were probably done a year or so before that) the book is 5 years behind the times.

in summary, good book for basics, for understanding how and why, for explanations of procedures and basic protocol. be wary of marino's unusual recommendations. be aware of more current recommendations. use other references as well for broader picture.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite
This book is rare because it is original. It welcomes you to the real world of critical care as seen by one expert physician. It was probably never intended for quick reference or board prep. The relatively large print and generous spacing make the book bigger but more pleasant to read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT FOR TRIP PLANNING WITH OR WITHOUT CHILDREN
For this survey book, Zagat teamed up with PARENT MAGAZINE to come up with a guide that is particularly helpful for parents traveling with children. It is broken down geographically, and within each geographic area, it is further broken down into "Attractions," "Hotels," and "Restaurant Chains."

Of particular value to parents is the fact that attractions are rated by their interest level for adults and, seperately, for children.

The way the book is laid out, it is convenient to use to plan a trip either around visiting major attractions s your starting point, or around finding attractions in a specific area that you might be visiting for other reasons.

There is a very handy section of Travel Tips for families with children that is from PARENT MAGAZINE.

There is also an extremely useful special feature index. Again, it is useful to both adults traveling sans children and those with children. For example you can find a listing of Hotels or Attractions that provide educational opportunities, or parties for kids, or babysitting service, or which have cradles and cribs, or for the adults, Spa Treatments and/or Golf. What makes these categories so useful is that they are categorized by the type of service offered with the hotels or attractions that provide the services listed alphabetically within each category. Then, for more information, you can go to the appropriate geographical location for fill-in information, including pricing.

In my opinion, Zagat's "U.S. Family Travel Guide" just might be the one indispensible guide for family trip planning. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BLUEPRINTS SERIES - GREAT
As with most of the blueprints series for clinical rotations, the book for Peds is an excellent source to use early on in the rotation to pump knowledge into your brain. Use this text to weave the fabric connecting the entire rotation. Use UpToDate or big, fat peds texts (Nelsons, Rudolphs) to learn specifics about your patients. And finally use a question book (Appleton and Lange, for example) to prepare for the shelf.

4-0 out of 5 stars The ONLY book to buy for step 2 peds
this is THE pediatrics book to buy if you are preparing for the step 2. i found the questions asked on the step 2 exam were not as demnading as one may contemplate upon reading this book. Its great if you have the time..(the first reading takes a while)..and some tables (eg baby's milestones table) are very long and boring, sometimes even so detailed that they seem silly for a review book. I had no problems with any pediatrics questions after i read this book.....i got a cool score on the step 2. the other fabulous BluePrints book is the OBG one. DOnt even bother buying any others....

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the shelf exam!
I just took the Pediatrics shelf exam having studied this book thoroughly, and I thought it was superb. The authors did an excellent job selecting high-yield topics and covering them without extraneous detail. However, you really do have to know everything in the book, basically everything that made it into this book is pretty critical.

I also found it handy to add any other facts I learned over the course of the rotation into the margins of the book. It leaves you with a reasonably thorough study guide.

Some people insist on reading Nelson's or another mega-text, but I can't imagine anyone remembering 900 (dense) pages with only three weeks or so of studying. I'd go with blueprints any day. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Helping you to be self sufficient
This wonderful book isn't intended to teach you about modern, complex, computer designed sails, or how to make them. Marino wants you to be able to repair and maintain your sails yourself. He wants you to understand how to sew a flat tabling, how to stick a cringle, how to sew on a boltrope. If you are adventurous, he will tell you how to completely make a sail for your boat, one that will last many, many years, but frankly very few people will ever make their own sails. But starting with a great beginner's project, the ditty bag, he shows you that traditional sailmaking is just a collection of readily understandable tasks, and then the repetition of those tasks, done with care and patience. Highly welcome and recommended in this age of multiple laminate fabrics and computer designed sails cut out by lasers. If that's what sailing is to you, look elsewhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good read; lots of details
The book seemed quite comprehensive on the subject of sailmaking. A good thing, but it took multiple readings to pick out what I did need vs. what I did not need when I started making my own sail. Having compared the techniques in the book to what I have seen in use among most so-called "production" sails, it was obvious to me this book was written for an audience who appreciates attention to details. It's a book for those serious about their sails, not for those who want to put together a quick and dirty sail that will last them only a couple of seasons, nor is it for those expecting nicely laid out patterns to follow.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice, well-illustrated history of sailmaking .
This book shows you the way to build sails the old fashioned way, although some of the techniques shown are not really the way they were built in the "old days". It has lovely illustrations and and clear instructions on how to make sails with an eye on the craftsmanship of the past. The modern world of computer-designed and cut sails has no place here! If you are a novice and want this book to learn the art and craft of modern sailmaking, the book is not for you, as the construction details shown are needlessly complicated and redundant. Modern sails are actually easier to build than most of the techniques shown in this book, and most of today's sailmakers do not build sails using the book's methods. There are other books on how to make sails that are better and easier, but this is a great book for those who like the old ways of doing things. Nice photos and instructions on how to repair sails, and good basic advice for sailors who want to try their hand at a bit of palm-and-needle work. The author is holding onto the old way of designing and building sails, but has neglected alot of modern advances in the art of sailmaking. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Slightly disappointed
This book was useful and somewhat helpful in providing additional information on reformatting my resume. However I probably would have chosen another book had I been able to compare. This book is 199 pages of which well less than half is actually narrated tips on creating a resume. The remainder of the book consists of resume and cover letter examples. In actuality this book should be considered a book of examples rather then instructional. In, addition, the examples are repetitive and often provide the same information over and over. Really in the approximately 75 pages of examples there are only about a dozen unique items to learn from. There are also pages dedicated to listing institutional references which seem to serve almost as a page filler.
The book does do a good job of diversifying its audience to a wide level of financial professionals however; in general, it seems somehow inadequate.

4-0 out of 5 stars Accountants: Do You Have The Best Resume?
When looking through books of resumes, I often find that I have a hard time adapting them to myself. This is usually because the resumes don't apply to accounting/finance. For that reason alone I would recommend this book. There are resume examples for the entry-level employee as well as the veteran. There are even some examples of resumes for people interested in changing careers (for example, going from private accounting to a hospital administrator).

Also helpful, are tips on interviewing and the cover and thank you letters. The book also lists names and phone numbers of various corporations and professional associations.

All in all, I would recommend this book for anyone looking for a job in accounting/finance-no matter what your experience level. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Blueprints
The Blueprints series in combination with UCV, first aid step 2, NMS question helped me ace step 2 and make a score in the high 90s. Must start with a sound step 1 base though. Highly recommended. Mastering the material is a must though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Series
I used Blueprints as my primary study guide during my third year of medical school for all rotations. They have all the information you need to know for shelf examinations. Really! I scored well above the 90th percentile on all shelf exams by diligently studying this series. A must have for clinical rotations.

5-0 out of 5 stars great series with a good overview
I really enjoyed reading the Blueprint series. These books are easy to read and give you a great overview over each topic. The more motivated student might feel that some subject is not very deeply covered. Still the essentials you need to know are there. In general USMLE don't ask beyond that. Illustration are excellent and extremly helpful. Also a quick summery with key points helps you to keep important things in mind. In addition the question section is very helpful to estimate your level of knowlege. Overall a series very concisely written, consistent and very good in terms of didactics. Recommended especially for foreign medical graduates. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Motivation to Explore More
Noticing this book was a recent guide to Puerto Rico written by a woman, my wife insisted on buying it. We both enjoyed reading it for its combination of listings and colorful background notes. It makes you realize there is an island and culture worth exploring. We liked the descriptions that helped us better understand the way of life and why things are what they are. We decided to stay at smaller hotels where we heard Spanish and could eat local food. It let us appreciate what a fascinating and friendly place the island is. This book really did encourage us to get "off the beaten path."

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book, but not all that unique
The most helpful thing about this book was the lists of places to stay at the end of every region-discussion. Other than that, "Explore Puerto Rico, 5th Edition" had almost all the same sites & activities listed. For the sake of traveling lightly, we ended up not even bringing "Off the Beaten Path" with us, relying instead on "Explore Puerto Rico" (which has its own issues, see my review on that page for details).

5-0 out of 5 stars The author definitely goes off the beaten path!
Being born and raised in Puerto Rico,I thought I knew all the good places to visit. I bought this book with a little skepticism and what a wonderful surprise it was. The author definitely goes off the beaten path and the tourist traps. My husband and I just came back from there and the directions and the restaurants that the author mentioned were excellent.

If you definitely want to explore the richness of the island and the diversified environments that it offers, this book is for you. I highly recommend it. We took it with us on our recent visit and we really had a very enjoyable time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Touchdown!
Hey, if Dan Marino was at first and goal, wouldn't a touchdown be sure to follow. My kids loved this book. It was extremely entertaining, and they thought the pictures were awesome. First & Goal is a different type of children's sports book in that, instead of just being a synopsis of his fine career, it teaches a more underlying lesson of giving it (anything) your all. The writing is quite good in that a nice, easy, descriptive language is used, making it entertaining for children of all ages. This is a good book, and you children are sure to love as much as mine did. ... Read more
