Buy it, fans of the King!
Great mirrored cover, a must for the completist.Very entertaining!

He's a hunka-hunka burning showman!!
Being from Jacksonville, and a big fan of Rick's, I recommend this book for everyone whether you want to be Elvis, Priscilla or Lisa Marie!! Full of memorable pics of Elvis, Rick performing and pics of him with Celebs like Sarah Jessica Parker from "Honeymoon in Vegas". The book is colorful, entertaining and fun for any library! Rick is the "King" of showman himself, so slip into your blue suede shoes, lean back relax and enjoy "Be Elvis" - it rocks just like Rick and the forever King!

Any animal lover can not go without this book it rules.
This book is the ruler of words the king of the best everybody will love this book if they love animals. Teachers and librarians should love this book because it is ecucational and it teaches and rules!

Fact or Fiction?
This book may be entertaining to those unfamiliar with Animal Planet's popular Emergency Vets TV program, but somewhat confusing to those who are faithful fans of the show. The plot revolves around the adventures of a fictional young woman named Megan, who is supposedly the niece of the real Dr. Robert Taylor, owner of Alameda East Veterinary Clinic in Colorado, where the E-Vets series is filmed. Megan gets to spend the summer working at the clinic, interacting with the series' veterinarians as well as a number of fictional characters, such as her friend Rick. Many of their escapades are highly improbable, and much misinformation is provided about both the vets and the clinic; the book's inevitable happily-ever-after ending, for example, suggests a lack of security at Alameda East that surely does not exist. The problem with the book is that it is neither fact nor fiction, but reads more like a teenager's fantasy, based on her favorite TV show. Marino would have done better by her young readers had she written either a real novel or a real work of non-fiction.

The Great Book Review (the book is great)
This book is great. If I could rate it 1-100 I'd give it 100. Maybe even more. It is about a girl, named Meagan, who wants to be a vet and is so excited when her dad says she is going to intern at an animal hospital. Her Uncle Bob works there. He's Dr. Robert Taylor from the show "Emergency Vets". She has a fun-filled summer with her cousins Allsion and Tommy -- Dr. Taylor's kids. She goes to a party at the zoo at night. It is called the Do At The Zoo. She goes with her friend Rick. She has a delightful six weeks including injuries, dog-napping and a whole lot of talking parrots. Cool book, especially for Dan Fans
For a number of years I've been a fan of Dan Marino and the Miami Dolphins. Dan Marino was a great quarterback, and we all hated to see him retire. The NFL clearly will never be the same without that flame throwing #13 to excite us all. His last years weren't near as good as the rest of his career, and Dan never won a Super Bowl either, but undeniably during Dan's hot seasons he was the most feared QB ever to play the game. Is Marino the best QB ever to play the game? Maybe not, but when it comes to all-out great passers in the NFL, Marino has to rank high on your list. Beckett's Great Sports Heroes is a good look into Dan's record breaking career. There are some good articles and nice pictures. Nothing really deep into Dan's life here, but Beckett still has produced a good enjoyable read on one of the greatest, those who are fans of Marino like me, and even those who aren't, will find an entertaining read.

Excellent
An extremely well-presented biog of the NFL's greatest quarterback. Different people gives their insights on the former Dolphin enabling us to see different sides of Dan the Man. I was intrigued to learn that he has written several commentaries on the work of Guy de Maupassant, has mastered the lute and mandolin and is an accomplished pastry chef.

Dan Is And Always Will Be The Man
I must admit that I am the biggest Dan Marino fan of all time, so I read this book with a little bias. However, Beckett Publications always produce good books.

This book is extremely well written, and there are tons of super pictures, many of which, I had never seen. Instead of having one storyline from start to finish, this book uses several authors, many of whom are well-recognizable to the sportsworld, to depict Marino's story throughout time.

Nobody in the game of football was a better pure passer, and nobody ever graced the game with more passion and competitiveness. This book sheds light on Dan Marino's overwhelming deisire to compete and win. In reading this book, you'll easily win too.

A complex hero
As the other reviewers indicate, this is an excellent book. The setting of Fry's heroism, Marseille and the environs of the South of France, permit an oblique perspective on the Holocaust, which unfolded principally much farther to the north and the east. Without the overwhelming machinery of the sealed boxcars, the gas chambers, the crematoria, some of the underlying causes of the Holocaust come into focus: the bureacratic obstructionism of the U.S. State department, motivated partly by national self interest and partly by the genteel anti-Semitism of individual Foreign Officers, provides a glimpse into how value-free institutional behaviour can be--a deadly underlying cause in Hitler's rise. The sympathetic behaviour of peasants living on the border and of petty police officers contrasts with the callous, and often actively evil, behaviour of their official leaders.

But always, there is the central enigma of Varian Fry himself--a complex, difficult , troubled man, in many ways a talented failure, who because of his clear moral vision became the catalyst for saving the flower of European artists and writers from the clutches of the Gestapo and their collaborators.

In another book, Todorov posits that in extreme moral situations, the basic moral unit for effective action is two, because he notes that the rescuers--Gentiles who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust were rarely individuals; often they were husbands and wives. Todorov's idea is the combination of personality traits and practical abilities that produces effective resistence to an overwhelming social climate of evil is beyond the range of a single individual, and that it requires a minimum of two people to act effectively in this kind of environment.

Interestingly, Fry did organise a staff of incredibly courageous co-workers to help save his "clients", but the intriguing question is whether his very flaws were part of Fry's mysterious ability to distance himself from his society (ie American) and to plunge into effective action to resist Hitler's evil earlier than almost anyone else.

This intriguing book is very rewarding and worthwhile. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 only because of an occasional passage in which the author, who seems to be almost super-abundantly talented, seems to stray into almost novelistic detail that would seem unlikely to be supported by his research. This is mostly atmospheric, and doesn't cast a shadow on the facts themselves.

Fascinating revelation of history through personal story
I encourage anyone interested in WWII to read this book. Especially fascinating to me were the depiction of important characters in pre-war Europe. I gobbled the book, then started looking for more - I would advise against following this book with Varian Fry's own account of this period, because it seems like Marino covered it pretty well.

Astounding tale of an unknown chapter in Holocaust history
Sometime, not-so-admirable people do incredibly admirable things, and find in themselves qualities that no one, themselves included, knew were there. Such was the case of Varian Fry.

In August 1940, Varian Fry boarded a plane in New York and flew to Spain, and from there to Marseilles, on a mission that would resonate far beyond his imagination.

Fry was an historian, involved with "radical" politics: the Spanish Civil War, the looming Holocaust. He went from observing and writing about the coming crises to actively participating in a way that no one who knew him, or even he himself, would have anticipated. Far from being identified as a humanitarian, he was, in fact, an intellectual snob, a classicist by training.

But he put his life on the line in an effort to save the leading cultural, intellectual, and artistic lights of Europe. Truth to tell, he had no idea what he was getting himself, or his New York sponsors, into, so the evolution of this rather untouchable, remote aesthete into a mover and shaker who consorted with the Marseilles underworld (and enjoyed it!) and worked outside the law is fascinating to observe.

Varian Fry was personally responsible for saving the lives of, among others, Marc Chagall, Lion Feuchtwanger, Victor Serge, Heinrich Mann, André Gide, Franz Werfel, Andre Breton, Max Ernst, Hannah Arendt... He also saved about 1500 other lesser known people. Altogether, in the year he spent in France before being arrested and kicked out by the Vichy puppets of the Gestapo, he turned himself inside out, discovering in himself a depth of caring and feeling that neither he, nor most of the people who knew him, would have suspected was present.

The story itself is so riveting that the book would have to be illiterate not to be absorbing. I found it well-written, with fascinating studies of the characters who worked with, and against Fry. It sort of fades out at the end, but then again, so did Fry, after his return to New York. He died in 1967, unrecognized for his work until the year before his death. Il Mito di Vespa
Yes, boring guy is right. If you've never been on a real vespa, or is you've only driven one on the freeway in Houston, this may be boring, but anyone who's ever taken to the road on a proper bike will love the photos alone. It chronicals a lifestyle and trying to advertise for something that everyone's already doing is easy. Indispensibly cool when trying to explain to people what you ride.

fantastic historical overview
I don't know what that other review is all about. If you own a vespa you'll love this. TONS of old ads, calendars, factory shots etc give a great overview of the vespa legend.

Touching book
I read this book when I was 14 years old. I am 20 years old now but I still read the book over again for the memories. Amy's struggle growing up in the midst of her brother's leukemia and coping with the fact that children do die other than in accidents. Robbie had his place in the book as the older brother who teased Amy but still loved her. It was unclear in the longevity Robbie had his illness, though. Read this book, I strongly recommend it. Share the sisterly pains with Amy and Sue, share the sadness with Robbie, and share the ups and downs of childhood with Amy. This book is a true winner.

So touching, so true, so profound, so sad...*sniff*
I've been reading this book since I was seven (I'm 15 now), and I bought it just because I thought the front cover picture was nice. The buying was worth it: 5 *****'s and more! I miss Robbie as much as Amy does, believe me, the story makes you feel so. The story has so much content, so much meaning, so much honesty, so much...feeling. I can't believe it's out of print; I believe every kid should get to read it. As in EVERY kid. At least once. Please, please, put it back on the shelves for the kids! AND READ IT!

Not So Hot for Doctors....
While I must admit I did not READ the entire book, I did give it a fairly thorough skimming. As a physician preparing to start my job search I found this book to be minimally useful. The cover boldly proclaims that the book contains model resumes for DOCTORS, etc. Truth is there is not a single model resume for a physician/doctor to be found in this book. From my point of view I really wanted give the book 1 star, but I suppose there is some useful information here for nurses, technicians, and others involved in health care. The false advertising on the cover really burns that part of me next to where I usually keep my wallet. M.D.'s and D.O.'s look elsewhere!
