Excerpt: Emil Artin (March 3, 1898, in Vienna December 20, 1962, in Hamburg) was an Austrian-Armenian mathematician. The mathematician Emil Artin was born on March 3, 1898 in Vienna to parents Emma Maria, née Laura (stage name Clarus), a soubrette on the operetta stages of Austria and Germany, and Emil Hadochadus Maria Artin, Austrian-born of Armenian descent. Several documents, including Emils birth certificate, list the fathers occupation as opera singer though others list it as art dealer. It seems at least plausible that he and Emma had met as colleagues in the theater. They had been married in St. Stephen's Parish on July 24, 1895. Emil entered school in September 1904, presumably in Vienna. By then, his father was already suffering symptoms of advanced syphilis, among them increasing mental instability, and was eventually institutionalized at the rece...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=245351 ... Excerpt: Bertrand Arthur William Russell, 3rd Earl Russell, OM, FRS (18 May 1872 2 February 1970) was a British philosopher, logician, mathematician, historian, socialist, pacifist, and social critic. Although he spent most of his life in England, he was born in Wales where he also died, aged 97. Russell led the British "revolt against idealism" in the early 1900s. He is considered one of the founders of analytic philosophy along with his protégé Wittgenstein and his predecessor Frege, and is widely held to be one of the 20th century's premier logicians. He co-authored, with A. N. Whitehead, Principia Mathematica, an attempt to ground mathematics on logic. His philosophical essay "On Denoting" has been considered a "paradigm of philosophy." Both works have had a considerable influence on logic, mathematics, set theory, linguistics, and philosophy. He was a prominent anti-war activist, championing free trade between nations and anti-imperialism. Russell was imprisoned for his pacifist activism dur...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=4163 ... Excerpt: Kurt Gödel (German pronunciation: ; April 28, 1906, Brno, Moravia, AustriaHungary January 14, 1978, Princeton, New Jersey, USA) was an Austrian logician, mathematician and philosopher. Later in his life he emigrated to the United States to escape WWII. One of the most significant logicians of all time, Gödel made an immense impact upon scientific and philosophical thinking in the 20th century, a time when many, such as Bertrand Russell, A. N. Whitehead and David Hilbert, were pioneering the use of logic and set theory to understand the foundations of mathematics. Gödel is best known for his two incompleteness theorems, published in 1931 when he was 25 years of age, one year after finishing his doctorate at the University of Vienna. The more famous incompleteness theorem states that for any self-consistent recursive axiomatic system powerful enough to describe the arithmetic of the natural numbers (Peano arithmetic), there are true propositions about the naturals that cannot be proved from the axioms. To prove this theorem, Gödel developed a technique now known as Gödel numbering, which codes formal expressions as natural numbers. He also showed that the continuum hypothesis cannot be disproved from the accepted axioms of set theory, if those axioms are consistent. He made important contributions to proof theory by clarifying the connections between classical logic, intuitionistic logic...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=16736 ... Read more

Product Description
In mathematics, the constructible universe (or Gödel'sconstructible universe), denoted L, is a particular classof sets which can be described entirely in terms of simplersets. It was introduced by Kurt Gödel in his 1938paper "The Consistency of the Axiom of Choice and of theGeneralized Continuum-Hypothesis". In this, he proved thatthe constructible universe is an inner model of ZF settheory, and also that the axiom of choice and thegeneralized continuum hypothesis are true in theconstructible universe. This shows that both propositionsare consistent with the basic axioms of set theory, if ZFitself is consistent. Since many other theorems only holdin systems in which one or both of the propositions istrue, their consistency is an important result. ... Read more

Excerpt: Stephen Grover Cleveland (March 18, 1837 June 24, 1908) was the 22nd and 24th President of the United States. Cleveland is the only president to serve two non-consecutive terms (18851889 and 18931897) and therefore is the only individual to be counted twice in the numbering of the presidents. He was the winner of the popular vote for president three timesin 1884, 1888, and 1892and was the only Democrat elected to the presidency in the era of Republican political domination that lasted from 1860 to 1912. Cleveland's admirers praise him for his honesty, independence, integrity, and commitment to the principles of classical liberalism. As a leader of the Bourbon Democrats, he opposed imperialism, taxes, subsidies and inflationary policies. As a reformer he also worked against political corruption, patronage, and bossism.
