Product Description
This book addresses a need in the computer technology market where there are no books covering security on Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and networks. There are many books about security, but none that deal in telephony technologies. Voice and Data Security will enable readers to: protect data networks from the most common threats; learn what security vulnerabilities currently exist in data networks become aware of the threats the telephone network poses to the data network; use updated information to protect the data network from the telephone network; useful ways to AVOID telephone network intrusions and attacks; and learn VoIP and the security implications of this transmission technique. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Finally a book that addresses telephone security
I am a senior engineer for network security operations.I read "Voice and Data Security" (VaDS) to learn more about vulnerabilities in the voice world.A search for "voice security" here yields four results, of which VaDS is the only in-print title.Although I would have preferred VaDS to focus solely on voice security issues, I still recommend it as the only modern published reference for this critical topic.

When reading VaDS, it's important to remember that all of the authors have some sort of relationship with San Antonio-based voice security company SecureLogix. That's ok, as Foundstone is the powerhouse behind the successful "Hacking Exposed" book series. Some parts of the book read like commercials for SecureLogix products like TeleSweep and TeleWall, but the authors largely focus on non-proprietary solutions to voice security.

VaDS is strongest when it speaks solely to voice security issues, and, to a lesser degree, network infrastructure.I learned quite a bit about tapping phones (ch. 11), voice mail abuse (ch. 14), and voice-data convergence (ch. 5).Chapters on broadband infrastructure and exploitation were helpful.Even though the final chapter seemed out of place, its intriguing coverage of cyber law kept my attention.

Less helpful were the chapters covering general security issues, such as cryptography (ch. 18), malware (ch. 19), sniffing (ch. 20), scanning (ch. 21), passwords (ch. 22), firewalls (ch. 23), IDS (ch. 24), and denial of service (ch. 26).This material is so well-covered elsewhere that its appearance did little to help VaDS distinguish itself.Chapter 27 was an exception, with its succinct discussions of popular Microsoft IIS web server vulnerabilities.

Aside from including well-worn material, VaDS suffered slightly from a few technical mistakes.Explanations of buffer overflows in chapter 4 needlessly associated them with TCP-based sessions.UDP-based buffer overflows are exploited regularly. The author of this chapter also seems to believe that buffer overflows are a problem because they overwrite "user ID and privilege information" on the stack. That's rarely the case; subverting return pointers is the problem.Chapters 8 and 15, describing voice protocols like H.323, were difficult to understand, and ch. 18 (p. 283) makes an unsubstantiated claim that "a well-known Mid-East terrorist was discovered to be using steganography."Typos on pp. 155-156 appeared, and port 443 was replaced by 444 on p. 69.

Overall, VaDS marks a welcome contribution to the information security community.I plan to include it in my tier two security analyst reading list, with recommendations to concentrate on its voice-related content.Hopefully the second edition will strip out the unnecessary network security coverage found elsewhere, and include more excellent explanations of voice security issues.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good intro to the core ideas of voice and data security
Not so long ago, the thought of running a corporate PBX on a client/server network was unthinkable, almost ludicrous. Now many companies have a VoIP (Voice Over IP) PBX via their Cisco routers. Some organizations have separate VON (Voice Over Network) systems. While the benefits of convergence are many, their security implications are often ignored or, when they are considered, are addressed too far along into the development process.

That convergence is the focus of Voice and Data Security. About a third of the book addresses the fundamentals of voice and data security, covering topics such as cryptography, sniffing, and spoofing. The rest of the book deals with securing digital and voice assets.

As an example, PBX and mail fraud are huge problems facing corporate America. Yet while most companies are aware of the situation, many organizations don't do all they can to secure their voice systems. This book contains an excellent policy and audit checklist on how to set up a corporate PBX policy. Items such as protection management, standards and procedures, technical safeguards, and incident response are discussed in the checklist, which alone is worth the cost of the book.

A single unauthorized modem in a corporate network will undermine firewalls, cryptography, and all other protection mechanisms. Thus, the authors cover how war dialers and telephone line scanners can be used to ensure that the back doors that unauthorized corporate modems create are closed.

Voice and Data Security is valuable to those needing a good introduction to the core ideas and security repercussions involved with the convergence of voice and data systems. It speaks volumes. ... Read more

Product Description
Histories of Southeastern Archaeology originated as a symposium at the 1999 Southeastern Archaeological Conference (SEAC) organized in honor of the retirement of Charles H. McNutt following 30 years of teaching anthropology. Written for the most part by members of the first post-depression generation of southeastern archaeologists, this volume offers a window not only into the archaeological past of the United States but also into the hopes and despairs of archaeologists who worked to write that unrecorded history or to test scientific theories concerning culture. The contributors take different approaches, each guided by experience, personality, and location, as well as by the legislation that shaped the practical conduct of archaeology in their area. Despite the state-by-state approach, there are certain common themes, such as the effect (or lack thereof) of changing theory in Americanist archaeology, the explosion of contract archaeology and its relationship to academic archaeology, goals achieved or not achieved, and the common ground of SEAC. This book tells us how we learned what we now know about the Southeast's unwritten past.Of obvious interest to professionals and students of the field, this volume will also be sought after by historians, political scientists, amateurs, and anyone interested in the South. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Next step in the evolution: the cometary man
It is 2061. The Comet Halley is completing its next near pass around the sun. A handful of men and women ride this cold ball of ice to install thrusters that would allow capturing it into a short period orbit in the inner solar system to mine its resources. Meet the colonists. Carl Osborn, the spacer, who has to step into bigger boots than he wished: take the hat of chief of mission after the captain is forced to put to a cryogenic sleep slot. Virginia Herbert, the computer programmer, is determined to prove it is possible to build bio-organic stochastic AI, JonVon, in spite of Earth's negative standing. Saul Lintz is the Halley colony's biologist and geneticist, the only person who can provide ammunitions against newly discovered life, the halleyform, that erupted into existence as the comet closes to the Sun. Saul also happens to be the one who helped to create enhanced humans, the Percells.

This is story about discovery of life on the comet where different human factions raise against each other due to long political history. It's about the adaptability of the human species, about genetic engineering, symbiosis, and the next step in human evolution. On Earth and here, humans have been split into factions: the genetically enhanced Percells, regular human beings called the Orthos, environmentalists, and each of these have their über extremists. It doesn't help that everyone on this mission had to take bio-engineered cyanutes living their bloodstream to help to dissolve cyanide gas before it would be deadly. Cyanutes become permanent symbiotants for their life and are the only way to make it possible for members of the expedition to survive. Hearing about their modified bodies and halleyforms, a paranoid Earth plans on their back. The fear of contamination makes the shattered society on Earth to determine to destroy the comet and those living upon it. The people on the comet break down into clans to save themselves best they can with any measures necessary. The racism and breakage is seen by the eyes of the three leading figures: Carl, Saul and Virginia, who also form the the classic love triangle. Some people even loose their mind and eat the comet life ending up mutated. Eventually the mission crew has to accept that they can never return to earth. In the end they become next step in the evolution: the "cometary man".

Two (2) stars. Written in 1986, the year when Halley's Comet last appeared in the inner Solar System. The novel has basis on Brin's doctoral work on comets. According to speculations and theories, life-drifting material, protected from space conditions by insulating layers of ice, might have entered the Earth atmosphere. The book succeeds at combining hard science fiction (plausible comet life) with social and political issues. Albeit the enhanced humans vs. orthos is probably nothing new, the writing brings each of the main figures very accessible to reader and their characters are gradually carried forward. The touch is more on the philosophical side than the politics. The portrayed society on the comet is well done and the reactions of colonists realistically erupt the under-the-surface tensions. In roughly 500 pages the book is a tad long to digest and thus exhibits slow development of events. A typical inner solar system story from the 1980's cosmology.

4-0 out of 5 stars Other Books
Space tribe time.

An expedition to explore a comet is not exactly filled with the most stable of individuals. This causes long term problems when they begin to use the giant ball of stuff as a space vehicle. When a virus strikes, atavistic tribal behaviour comes to the fore, and some of the more rational still among those on board struggle to keep things together.

4-0 out of 5 stars Adventure science-fiction at it's literate best
Ah, this was such a satisfying novel. It follows three primary characters over a century as they are part of the effort to study Halley's comet. They discover a primitive life-form which attatches itself to the humans in a symbiotic relationship and eventually causes them to be an imagined threat to Earth.

The theme of genetically enhanced humans (Percells) and the rivalry between them and the normal humans is explored. Some consider this an overworked theme, but the authors here approach it from a logical perspective.

This is a good read and quite recommended for science-fiction readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Hard Science
I enjoyed this book immensely! The perfect balance of exploring scientific concepts and telling a riveting story.Like "Earth" (novel by David Brin), some of the scientific ideas are a little farfetched, but not just silly. They are well thought out, and explained in relatively simple terms. There are explorations of biology (the interplay of hostile and symbiotic microscopic life forms - germs), astrophysics (using sublimation to steer a comet), and even the psycology (small groups of people under stress - a la "Lord of the Flies").I think this is why it took two authors to write this book...there are just too many interesting concepts going on for just one person to have thouroughly researched.Oh, and did I mention that it has lots of action and a great story. Not nearly as dry as you might guess from the title - quite a treat.

4-0 out of 5 stars Captivating

5-0 out of 5 stars A contemporary voice with word tone poems of the west.
When a book comes along that speaks with a voice that gives the reader an emotional understanding of the west, it quickly moves to the top of our "must read" list. "Windmill. Essays from Four MileRanch" by David Romtvedt is such a book. It is a book that makes thereader feel that you are there...experiencing a real understanding of whatit means to live and work in the west.

Calling Romtvedt's experiences"essays" is appropriate. They are separate stories...but morethan merely stories. They appear to be unrealated chapters, but the threadthat weaves throughout is an understanding and appreciation of living inthe west. Those who live, or have lived in Wyoming and the west (and wemean LIVED in the west, not just had a residence there), will share thekindred spirit of which Romtvedt writes.

Often, when reading theseessays, we had to put the book down momentarily to absorb the words, andthe experiences behind the words. The words paint pictures of thelandscape, the heritage, and contemporary life near Buffalo, Wyoming.Romtvedt allows us to peer into his very personal thoughts and experiences. He lets us know that there is beauty in the "mundane", for whatwe may first perceive as mundane can been experienced on so many levels. The only limitations to our experiences are those we impose upon ourselves. In Windmill, Romtvedt shows us that it is possible to experience the beautyof the west through something as common as a windmill, as distant as thethunder rolling across the plains and as close as ourselves.

Through thisbook, we are able to experience the beauty of simple words and thecomplexity of the west. Romtvedt draws us into his world and shows us howeasy it is to open ourselves to an awareness of life around us. Whetherintended or not, he almost seems to defy us NOT to increase our awarenessas we share his awareness of his world.

Occasionally, the picturespainted by the words are enhanced with charcoal drawing (or pencildrawings) by Gregory Truett Smith. Those pages don't detract from the wordpictures, but rather make us wish there were more of them.

The followingpassage from the book shows the beauty and meaning of simplethings:

"One June night as I was coming down out of the Bighornswith my friend John Lane, we saw a light we didn't recognize off to thenortheast. UFOs maybe, or a giant city that had been built in our two-weekabsence from civilization. We stopped our truck and got out. In thestillness, we saw the Northern Lights - long shimmering bands of yellow andwhite pouring down from the top of the world, then racing back up.

Westared. After a few minutes, we heard the rumbling of thunder from thesoutheast, and, turning, we saw lightning - jagged fierce bolts, somerunning up and down, some back and forth across the sky. We turned from onelight to the other.

Next came singing. It wasn't the long howling singingof wolves - the last Bighorn wolf was shot in 1939. Rather, it was thesinging of coyotes - short bright yips very close to laughter. There wereso many singers that the song took on a quality that seemed familiar, human.

Sheep need to be protected from coyotes but I can't help but feelsympathy for the clever dog. Coyote will find a way around every impediment- traps, poisons, guns, trucks, snowmobiles, airplanes. When night falls,no matter how hard the day, Coyote begins to sing. Coyote's song is 'We arehere; it is now'."

Romtvedt's words are simple. They invite us toshare personal experiences. They invite us to be open to personalexperiences of our own. The book quotes poet Lew Welch when he made anobservation to a friend:

"...to the mountains the trees are justpassing through".

This not only shows us OUR place; but shows howimportant it is for we mere mortals to appreciate our place in the worldaround us. Romtvedt expresses that appreciation. He shows us how simplethat complex appreciation can be...and, in many ways...how vital it is forus to cultivate that appreciation.

If the contemporary west has a voice,it may be the voice of David Romtvedt. If it is not HIS voice,"Windmill. Essays from Four Mile Ranch" shows us that, without adoubt, he HEARS that voice.

The Wyoming Companion

4-0 out of 5 stars Uneven, but worthwhile.
I read a library copy of this book several months ago and now I am thinking about buying a copy for my own library.I thought it was a bit uneven but parts of it have stuck with me. I want to go back and reread it. I found similarities between this book and the nature writings of Amishauthor David Kline.

5-0 out of 5 stars Conveys a sense of place and simple wisdom.
In his essays on his small town, the local economy, the local culture, being a nonhunter, death, sheep, and weather, Romtvedt indeed conveys a sense of place and simple wisdom. Recommended for regional, large public, and academic libraries.LIBRARY JOURNA ... Read more

Product Description
Along with The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas and Dom Casmurro, Quincas Borba is one of Machado de Assis' major works and indeed one of the major works of nineteenth century fiction. With his uncannily postmodern sensibility, his delicious wit, and his keen insight into the political and social complexities of the Brazilian Empire, Machado opens a fascinating world to English speaking readers.

When the mad philosopher Quincas Borba dies, he leaves to his friend Rubiao the entirety of his wealth and property, with a single stipulation: Rubiao must take care of Quincas Borba's dog, who is also named Quincas Borba, and who may indeed have assumed the soul of the dead philosopher. Flush with his newfound wealth, Rubiao heads for Rio de Janeiro and plunges headlong into a world where fantasy and reality become increasingly difficult to keep separate. Brilliantly translated by Gregory Rabassa, Quincas Borba is a masterful satire not only on life in Imperial Brazil but the human condition itself. ... Read more

Machado de Assis is a genius. Born from a very poor family, he learned languages during the Brazilian imperial period where lower classes were very limited to access education. He started with very typical romantic novels although with his own style. He married a well educated portuguese woman who introduced him more selected european literature. After 40 years old Machado wrote what we classified as classics. Machado's style was not a realistic naturalism writer. Machado is Machado. He created his own style helping literature to go ahead of his time. A genius.

4-0 out of 5 stars A poignant satire of 19th century Brazil
"Quincas Borba" is one of a series of fine novels by Brazilian author Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis. The author, who died in 1908, is one of the major figures of 19th century South American literature. "Quincas Borba" is a sort of companion volume to another of the author's novels, "The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas." While "Quincas Borba" does not, in my opinion, attain the level of literary inventiveness of its companion novel, it is still a fascinating, and ultimately moving, piece of fiction. It has been translated into a smooth English by Gregory Rabassa.

"Quincas Borba" tells the story of Rubiao, who inherits a fortune, as well as a pet dog, from the eccentric philosopher Quincas Borba. Curiously, the dog is also named Quincas Borba. The novel follows Rubiao as he attempts to find love and fulfillment in 19th century Brazil.

The novel contains many ironic comments on the craft of writing itself, and examines the political, sexual, and economic complexities of Rubiao's world. The author's writing is peppered with intriguing cultural allusions: Poe, Shakespeare's "Othello," Homer, Mozart, Kant, Dante's "Inferno," and more.

"Quincas Borba" is an effective mix of comedy and tragedy. Machado de Assis writes with both insight into and compassion for the human condition. Those interested in 19th century literature, Latin American studies, or the development of the novel should definitely read this book.
