5-0 out of 5 stars Be Gentle, Be Faithful, Be Moved
This gentle, faithful little book is full of wonders to be read, and re-read -- personal insights, quick asides, random thoughts, elegant sermonettes on life and living. James Stephen Behrens doesn't waste words; these quick essays are like Cistercian chapels, with no unnecessary adornment, nothing to distract the mind from the matter at hand. This makes you savor each word, contemplate each story. Sometimes, in this book, the simplest notions are the most moving -- why he thinks, for example, that the most eloquent prayer is one word, "Stay." When I started leafing through this book, I folded over the corners of pages I liked. Bad idea. Now, nearly all the pages are dog-eared. But the best news is that discovering this book has simplified my Christmas shopping. Now I know what to get people who seem to have everything: this little package of wisdom, a book that looks at commonplace things with uncommon grace.

5-0 out of 5 stars 365 Gifts
This book is full of "story sparks" that only take seconds to read but open the doors to considerable wisdom and hope - with humor as a bonus. The deft way that each is connected to a few lines of well-chosenscriptures breaks open that medium as well, connecting it unforgettably tolived experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adding a lift to life
Beginning each day with Fr. Behrens' meditations lifts my spirits and helps me find the humor, joy and love of God in seemingly ordinary things. His personal experiences and thoughts shine a fresh light on each day'sScripture passage. I also find that his vignettes of the daily lives of themonks demystify holiness and help me pursue it in my daily life.

5-0 out of 5 stars One a Day
This book contains a daily dose of wisdom to go along with that morning coffee, toast and multi vitamin. It's easy to digest and helps nourish the mind and soul throughout the day.The snippets of scripture and Fr.Behrens life stories, cause us to slow down and take another, deeper lookinto ourselves and our past.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Grace Is Everywhere"
I have just come to know James Stephen Behrens and it is a fortunate discovery!Although I have read comments comparing him to Thomas Merton, also a Trappist priest-writer,I find his bill of fare served differently. There is a profound simplicity in the reflections as presented in thisbook. One must chew the words slowly to savor the delicacy of the banquetBehrens puts before the reader. He has taken the common place and elevatedit to the supernatural where it belongs. I cannot look at my everyday worldwith the same eyes since feasting on "GraceIs Everywhere." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for fathers
This book is an excellent resource for men who want to better raise their children, and become better fathers. It teaches how we can become wiser in a world that is content with dumbing us down and how to stand up for our beliefs and what is right. It uses the Bible as its resource and the examples of wise Biblical leaders such as Solomon. It's easy to read and undertand, and I definitely recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fatherhood is Forever
This is not a study of Proverbs but a study of Christian fatherhood issues for men who have chosen or considering that worldview. In that case FFF would be a great tool for a young men's discipleship study or a father - son study. A hardback copy would be an excellent gift idea. The book is filled with fun, colorful illustrations that make reading easy. The author deals with the usual social ills of words, sex, temper, alcohol, money, work and friends. The strategy of the outline should not be overlooked: What is fatherhood? What are the issues? What will you do? As a father, leader and discipler of four (now seven) children and grandfather of five, this will certainly be a top shelf reference in my library. Men who understand and are in the game should strongly consider this book. If the cover picture doesn't hook you, don't buy it. ... Read more

It has been only since the 1960s that dangerous petroleum-based fertilizers and pesticides have been in widespread use, so any serious gardening "how to" treatise published prior to 1960 will, quite "naturally," exclude their use. "Origiganic" is a new word we have coined here at Better Days Books to describe these time-tested, chemical-free "original" methods of growing food in our backyards, gardens and even on full scale farms. With THE BETTER DAYS BOOKS ORIGIGANIC GUIDE TO GROWING CABBAGES AND CAULIFLOWERS (Original publication date: 1889) you'll be well on your way to producing a better, healthier, safer, and even generally less expensive bounty of fabulous, poison-free food - for your family and for the marketplace. ... Product Description

In recent years the American public has witnessed several hard-fought battles over nominees to the U.S. Supreme Court. In these heated confirmation fights, candidates' legal and political philosophies have been subject to intense scrutiny and debate. Citizens, Courts, and Confirmations examines one such fight--over the nomination of Samuel Alito--to discover how and why people formed opinions about the nominee, and to determine how the confirmation process shaped perceptions of the Supreme Court's legitimacy.

Drawing on a nationally representative survey, James Gibson and Gregory Caldeira use the Alito confirmation fight as a window into public attitudes about the nation's highest court. They find that Americans know far more about the Supreme Court than many realize, that the Court enjoys a great deal of legitimacy among the American people, that attitudes toward the Court as an institution generally do not suffer from partisan or ideological polarization, and that public knowledge enhances the legitimacy accorded the Court. Yet the authors demonstrate that partisan and ideological infighting that treats the Court as just another political institution undermines the considerable public support the institution currently enjoys, and that politicized confirmation battles pose a grave threat to the basic legitimacy of the Supreme Court.

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst tarot book ever!
This must surely be the worst tarot book ever written.
Totally banal, especially the section "101 frequently asked questions.", these are supposed to be psychic questions e.g. "My boyfriend smokes. ......Is it unreasonable for me to ask himto quit smoking?".?????!!!! And most of all the book is stupendously overpriced, with very little helpful information at all; and a misleading title as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Get paid for Readings
Great beginners book.Easy to read and understand. Great for at home telephone readers, email now to start working.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great beginner insight
I started with another book and then read this one, but it was most helpful.I was able to learn basics and get a better insight to tarot cards and psychic reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an EXCELLENT book!
I was looking for something that would allow me to read cards in a short time. I looked at several other Tarot books but they were filled with an information overload of Tarot symbolism. This book gets right to the point. Highly recommended!

1-0 out of 5 stars A Waste of Money
This book is without a doubt the least informative Tarot book I've ever read. The section regarding the "most frequently asked psychic questions" is larger than the informational section giving card meanings. The Minor Arcana cards are given only the briefest description - in fact, they are all given on the same page - all 4 suits! It reads like a vacation brochure. The one saving grace is the guide for putting the cards together in an actual spread. Otherwise, this book is only for someone looking for the VERY bare essentials. ... Read more

Product Description

This book recounts the life and achievements of Clarence King, widely recognized as one of America’s most gifted intellectuals of the nineteenth century, and a legendary figure in the American West.King’s genius, singular accomplishments, and near-death adventures unfold in a narrative centered on his personal relationship with his lifelong friend and colleague, James Gardner. The two, upon completing their studies at Yale, traveled by wagon train across the continent and worked with the California Geological Survey.King went on to establish the Geological Exploration of the 40th Parallel, a government mapping program that stretched across the western mountain chains from California to Wyoming. This was the precursor to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).Founded in 1879, with Clarence King as its architect and first director, the USGS became the most important and influential science agency in the nation.

The adventurous aspects of conducting geological fieldwork in the West, much of them documented by letters written by King and Gardner, punctuate a book copiously illustrated with historic maps and photographs showing localities and people important to the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Captivating Account of Science and Adventure in the Early West
Who ever said that history was dry?Moore has interwoven first rate field science history with a series of captivating adventures in which American geologist Clarence King and his best friend, James Gardner are repeatedly thrown into life-threatening situations, including being spread-eagled by Indians with the makings of a fire set upon their stomachs in order to effect the most slow and unbearable death; another adventure finds King galloping ahead of bandits intent on taking his life.

Moore's account of the life and accomplishments of Clarence King, whom Henry Adams (the prominent Harvard professor and descendant of two presidents) called the greatest American of his age, is based partly on letters and other primary historical materials that Moore himself unearthed. In the 1850's, Yale-trained prodigy King, at age 25, organized and led a precurser to the U.S. Geological Survey called the "United States Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel", hence the book's title: "King of the 40th Parallel".Such a lofty appointment of one so young certifies to the inordinate esteem in which the young King was held by those in power in Washington.King's fortieth parallel survey was so brilliantly conceived and cornucopian in its accomplishments, that three competing federal surveys, formed shortly afterward to map other regions of the nation, patterened themselves after his model. His singular performance in leading the survey for twelve years and writing and editing a landmark series of volumes and atlases propelled him at the age of 37 into the directorship of the U.S. Geological Survey at its founding in 1879.And the astonishing, secret details of King's private life -- unknown to all until his death -- will make the reader yearn for a full length sequel.

Who better than to have written this history? In the preface to this excellent and fascinating book, science historian William Glen notes that James Moore is uniquely equipped for the job. That claim seems justified as the thoughts, activities, and scientific products of Clarence King are voluably unfolded, revealing significant overlap with much of Moore's own distinguished geologic career. Both men earned their exceptional reputations in Earth science mainly through years of pioneering field work in the American West.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Scientist's Take on an Extrordinary Surveyor
I really enjoyed King of the 40th Parallel by James Moore.Much has been written about the extraordinary Clarence King, the leader of the 40th Parallel Expedition and the first director of the United States Geological Survey. And no wonder,-King is fascinating, not only for his contributions to the exploration of the West, but for his superstar personality.
I have known the author as a friend and colleague for many years and as a geologist, I appreciate Jim's details of King's geographical and geological explorations.Jim Moore brings to King's biography his own expertise in geology and geography, having spent many years studying the geology of the Sierra.Moore's varied geological adventures, from mapping Sierra granites to seabottom explorations off Hawaii, give him an explorer kinship with King.Jim has enriched King's story with background material of the procedures and instrumentation of that early cartography. He expands on the lives of King's significant colleagues, and he has noted the many firsts in geologic and geographic discoveries. The meticulous observations and recordings of King's surveys became baseline standard for the U.S. Geological Survey when it was established in 1879.

Jim has not dramatized some of the stranger twists in King's life, but presented them in astraight forward manner.Jim's book is rich in material from original letters, especially newly-discovered letters of King's colleague, James Gardner, to his mother during the explorations.Gardner was a life-long friend of King and chief topographer on his expeditions. In addition, the book is rich in pictures and drawings, bringing a feeling of the times.Extensive appendixes include original letters. Some, accounting for government equipment, seem a bit superfluous, but they do flavor the history and at least show that government bureaucrats have not changed much in the last 140 years. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
This new casebook, the most comprehensive ever written about the subject, is sure to be a hit with both students and instructors. Unlike previous works, which have treated aviation law as a narrow and technical specialty, this text is driven by a broad and unique vision. Through the use of contemporary cases, extensive notes, intriguing problems, and frequent references to popular culture, it is the first to make clear just how large a role aviation plays in everyday life and explain why all lawyers can profit from having at least a passing familiarity with the field.

The text—fresh and crisply written—is organized into six chapters that can be taught as sequenced or in an instructor’s preferred order. After an introductory chapter that explains the principles of flight, identifies the sources of aviation law, and reflects on the ethical challenges faced by aviation practitioners, the book proceeds to look at the legal issues surrounding aircraft, airmen (pilots, mechanics, flight attendants), airlines (both passenger and cargo), and airports.

Inside the book users will find 112 principal readings, 168 notes, 25 problems, and 30 appendices. The principal readings are drawn from a rich variety of sources, including cases, law review and bar journal articles, newspaper reports, and legislative and executive pronouncements. The notes both expand on the principal readings and provide commentary on additional issues and subjects. The problems, one for each section, allow students to quickly determine if they have successfully mastered the materials they have just read. And the appendices reproduce the most important air treaties—from Paris (1919) and Warsaw (1929) to Montreal (1999) and Cape Town (2001)—thereby further increasing the book’s utility and flexibility (while obviating the need for students to purchase and carry with them a separate statutory supplement).

A particularly distinguishing feature of the book is its focus on the social history of aviation. Thus, sprinkled liberally throughout the notes are references to the men and women who have become part of aviation lore, including the Wright Brothers, Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart, Howard Hughes, Chuck Yeager, D.B. Cooper, and Jessica Dubroff. Also covered are notable historical incidents, such as the 1948 Berlin Airlift, the 1960 U-2 spy plane crisis, the 1976 Entebbe Airport raid, and the 1983 U.S.S.R. shoot-down of a civilian airliner. As one would expect, special attention is paid to 9/11 and its aftermath—from the renaming of Newark International Airport to the numerous changes that have been made in boarding procedures to the dispute over how to compensate the victims and their families.

The notes also draw heavily from popular culture. Thus, students learn not only from treaties, cases, and statutes, but from such varied and fun fare as Erica JongÂ’s Fear of Flying, Donald TrumpÂ’s The Apprentice, and that TV show "about nothing" (Seinfeld). As a result, students are far more likely to come to class prepared, excited, and eager to participate.

Lastly, the TeacherÂ’s Manual will help both new and experienced instructors get the most out of the book. In addition to comprehensively analyzing the text, it offers tips for preparing extra credit assignments, leading field trips, tapping guest speakers, and incorporating video clips into class presentations. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars satisfactory
The book was in good condition and shipped promptly but I expected to also receive an instructor's Workbook with the text which did not sent to me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introductory casebook for law school but with some weaknesses
There are really only two "casebooks" for aviation law in U.S. law schools. This one and "Aviation Law: Cases, Laws, and Related Sources."I have used both of them.In general, I believe the latter is a better all-around introduction but probably not the best for use in the classroom.

As such, if you are not a law student but a lawyer that requires thorough introductory materials then I recommend the other book.In this case, I also recommend the treatise: Aviation Tort & Regulatory Law by West Group.

If you are a law student or law professor teaching aviation law, then I recommend this book.My reasoning is that this book is best suited for the three month semester class and achieving the objectives of learning the basics of aviation law.For the student who is more interested in aviation law, the notes at the end of each section provide for further information on the related subject matter, such as law review articles, cases, regulations or statutes.

That said, I do have several problems with this book.

First, the first chapter, the introduction, is absolutely terrible and essentially useless. To tell the reader about the history of aviation, the authors felt it wise to simply copy and paste this information from Wikipedia.I give them credit for actually having the audacity to not only do this but also to let you know that they did this by citing to it.This is weak.

The introduction could have also provided commentary on the various organizations involved, such as the roles of the U.S. Department of Transportation (economic), FAA (safety) and NTSB (investigative).Instead, the introduction's section on "Sources of Aviation Law" is a bundle of cases and articles that don't provide anything coherent or usable.

In the least, would it have hurt the authors to copy the table of contents from Title 49 of the U.S. Code or Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations to show all the main areas of U.S. aviation law? This would have been an ideal place to also list a lot of aviation legislation (i.e. Airport and Airway Improvement Act, etc.) and conventions (Chicago, Cape Town, etc.), instead of the reader finding out about them over the course of the cases.

Second, there is an over focus on litigation (or case materials) when it comes to aviation law here. There is a great deal of transactional and regulatory practice involved in aviation law.In fact, there is no reason why a law school course in aviation law couldn't be a completely transactional course. It would have been prudent for the authors to provide the text of relevant statutes and regulations.

Third, there is some unnecessary editorializing here by the authors. For instance, the authors found it necessary to comment how "airmen" is such a sexist term.Seriously?

Overall, I recommend this book for the classroom setting - but hope that the professor incorporates real-world transactional and regulatory issues otherwise the professor is depriving the students of really understanding this area of law.Students who are truly interested in this industry should thoroughly review the notes at the end of each section, reading the recommended materials. ...
