Book Description
Philip Hall is the cutest, smartest boy in the sixth grade, and Beth Lambert loves him. The fact that he beats her in classwork, sports, and almost everything else doesn't bother Beth at first. Then she realizes that Philip might be best because she's letting him beat her. Beth knows that she deserves to be Number One--and she's going to prove it! This funny, universal story of a girl learning that she matters in the world has delighted readers for over twenty years.

"Beth Lambert is an energetic and spirited young black girl whose spunk rings true from start to finish...It's a fresh, humorous romp, full of the vitality of girls and boys growing up."--School Library Journal ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a classic
I just recently read this book after reading the positive reviews. I really enjoyed it and wish I had read it when I was about 11 and lived for cute guys' approval.
The main character goes after her goals even though that means competing against the boy she has a huge crush on. I love that she stays true to herself. She earns respect from others.
I think this would be a great book for any preteen.

3-0 out of 5 stars It wasn't what I expected
I read this book for a book club of 4th grade girls. Most everyone else in the group liked it, but I didn't. It was hard to get into and the improper grammer was difficult to understand. I didn't like how each chapter was completely different. Once I would get into the chapter, it would end and the next chapter would be about something else altogether. Also, I agree with another reviewer that the ending was too obvious and predictable.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Best Review You'll Ever Read!
Philip Hall Likes Me, I Reckon Maybe was a very exciting book. I really liked how Beth had a moody attitude. She would try what ever popped into her mind. She never gave up on anything! I like the way Philip ran his club!Beth was never jealous of Philip or anybody else, but Philip was sure jealous of Beth when she finally beat him in the end.It is a good book about friendship! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Elizabeth Lambert vs. Philip Hall
This book is about a "perfect" girl who wants to win a contest and her crush and sometimes enemy enters too and she looses against him. Later she makes a plan to "try" to get back at him for beating her in the Abner Jerome Brady Leadership Award Competition. The sequel to this book was awarded the Newbery Honor Book. And Summer of My German Soldier, another book by Bette Greene was honored with the National Book Award. I would give this book two out of 10 stars. And I would recommend this book to people who like multicultural style books. I liked this book because Elizabeth, the main character, is sort of like how I use to be. I wanted to be good at everything but found out it was impossible to be perfect at EVERYTHING. ... Read more

Book Description

Join the irrepressible Beth Lambert as she goes home after a long visit with her grandmother in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. Beth is happy to see her friends the Pretty Pennies, and even happier to see her family (and eat her mother's fried turkey, tamale pie, and floradora potatoes), but she might just be happiest of all to see her best friend, Philip Hall.

But not for long, because Philip gets it into his head (with a little help from Beth) that she made a new friend in Walnut Ridge -- a boyfriend. Now Philip won't rest until he meets this "nutty Walnutter" face-to-face in an arm-wrestling match in front of the whole town. There's only one problem -- Beth's new friend doesn't exist. She made him up! Once again Beth's mouth has gotten her into trouble. And once again she'll have to do some fast talking to see if she can get herself out of it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Even Growing Up is aCompetition!

Pocahontas, Arkansas in the 70's was an interesting place for kids to grow up, we discover as readers are treated to a year in the life of 11-year old Beth Lambert. As the middle child in a modest black family this spunky girl considers herself no one's inferior--certainly not to her neighbor, Mr. Everything, Philip Hall.President of the 4-H club and nonchalant about being top dog in their class, Philip cons admiring Beth into doing his chores on his father's dairy farm. So how long will she permit him to undervalue her intelligence, her innate ability, and her fond feelings for him?

Beth faces many challenges this year as President of the Pretty Pennies, a girls group perhaps formed in response to the supposedly
brave Tiger Hunters. Not that the town is ever threatened by actual tigers, you understand, but well, there is always the chance that the wild Gorilla Man may be on the prowl again. This plucky girl reveals plenty of smarts and verbal bravado--which sometimes gets her into hot water. When there is need--and even when there isn't--she plunges boldly into many difficult situations: unmasking turkey thieves, retail fraud, running a produce stand, being lost on a mountain, relay races to prove a sexist point, and a serious calf-raising contest.Life is never dull when Beth is around, but how can she ever get that one Tiger Hunter, whom she loves to hate, to like her--and actually admit it?Lite, fun reading for middle schoolers of all ages.

Book Description
To Have This Land is a better read than the title suggests. The book is about the local politics prevailing in Dakota Territory in 1889 that created the conditions for an Indian massacre. The book also tells about ranchers living along the western edge of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation who organized into the Dakota Militia. During the month preceding massacre at Wounded Knee, this essentially leaderless group had nearly daily skirmishes with young warriors from the hostile camp on Stronghold Table. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly balanced
In the preface to this book, Philip Hall explains the two-fold purpose ofthis book. It is an effort to tell a story of the Wounded Knee massacre of1890 from the standpoint of local frontier history, rather than the morecommon efforts that treat the event as an episode in American Indianhistory, or in Western military history. Hence he tells the story of whitesettlers and ranchers in the area. The second purpose is to contribute to adeeper and more meaningful effort at reconciliation between Indians andwhites in western South Dakota.

Hall does a good job of the first goal, orchestrating the views of participants on the settler side of theIndian-white encounter around the time of the massacre. He shows that theseviews were more complicated than readers of other histories might suspect. In putting forth these views, he also lays out some perspectives thatcould, with a focused and committed political effort, stimulate thepossibilities of mutual understanding between Indians and whites in SouthDakota, as well as other areas in the West. He shows that participants inthe crisis of 1890 found themselves caught up in events beyond theircontrol. They were faced with choices in which all the alternatives failedto satisfy their priorities. In the choices they would have liked to makethey might have found the basis for peaceful coexistence, rather than theviolence and oppression that became the mode of interracialrelations.

Hall does a good job of orchestrating a narrative that evokesthese possibilities. However, his approach often seems too much that of ajournalist who conceals his stake in the outcome of the events. His secondobjective--racial healing--might be served better by stronger analysis andthe commitment throughout the text that is put forth in the preface and theauthor's bio. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
Most fluid flows of practical importance are fullythree-dimensional, so the non-linear instability properties ofthree-dimensional flows are of particular interest. In some cases thethree-dimensionality may have been caused by a finite amplitudedisturbance whilst, more usually, the unperturbed state isthree-dimensional. Practical applications where transition is thoughtto be associated with non-linearity in a three- dimensional flowarise, for example, in aerodynamics (swept wings, engine nacelles, etc.), turbines and aortic blood flow. Here inviscid `cross-flow'disturbances as well as Tollmien-Schlichting and Görtler vorticescan all occur simultaneously and their mutual non-linear behaviourmust be understood if transition is to be predicted. The non-linearinteractions are so complex that usually fully numerical or combinedasymptotic/numerical methods must be used.
Moreover, in view of the complexity of the instability processes, there is also a growing need for detailed and accurate experimentalinformation. Carefully conducted tests allow us to identify thoseelements of a particular problem which are dominant. This assists inboth the formulation of a relevant theoretical problem and thesubsequent physical validation of predictions. It should be noted thatthe demands made upon the skills of the experimentalist are high andthat the tests can be extremely sophisticated - often makinguse of the latest developments in flow diagnostic techniques, automated high speed data gathering, data analysis, fast processingand presentation. ...
