Book Description
The Hamilton Letters offers an engaging portrait of a complex and sophisticated figure, and brings a dynamic period of history to life. Sir William Hamilton personified the age of the Enlightenment--a collector and connoisseur, amateur scientist and archaeologist, vulcanologist, anthropologist and above all a gentleman of taste and intellectual curiosity. As King George III's ambassador Kingdom of Naples from 1764-1800, Sir William witnessed pivotal events in European history. This is the first collection of his complete correspondence with the English court between 1797 and 1799 which sheds vivid light on the history of the kingdom of Naples on the cusp of the Napoleonic Wars. It is an invaluable guide which will enthrall anyone interested in the colorful world of 19th-century European history. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a woman!
I must say at once that I'm very impressed with Kate William's writing. She writes in a modern style but with no discordant notes to take away from the period to which she is transporting the reader. Emma was born to an impoverished family in England in 1765. After a hard battle just to survive as a child, she spent a short stint as a domestic before following her natural bent as a theatrical, eventually ending for a short period, as a "woman of ill-fame". She then was taken up bydissolute aristocrat, Charles Greville, who used her casually and tried to pass her off to one of his relatives when she became pregnant. Luckily for Emma, the relative was Sir William Hamilton, a rich diplomat in his late sixties who lived in Naples and who, recognising her theatrical talents, honed her dancing and singing skills with excellent teachers so that she soon became a favourite at the Court of the King and Queen of Naples. Hamilton married her after a few years, much to the chagrin of his family who resented the potential loss of his fortune. Their marriage was a happy one, even though he was unable to give her a much wanted child, as she nursed him devotedly through bouts of ill health and generally made his life happy and contented. In 1793, the renowned Admiral of the British fleet, Horatio Nelson, sailed into the harbour at Naples and the rest is history. They fell passionately in love to such an extent that even Sir William bowed to the inevitable and, rather than lose Emma, agreed to live in a menage a trois and accept parentage of their daughter, Horatia. After Nelson's death, Emma's so-called friends who had been only too willing to accept her hospitality and generosity, now totally shunned her, leaving poor Emma ill, penniless and alone, to die in great pain in Calais. Like another reviewer, Michael Schuyler, this book left me feeling melancholic and very bitter towards grasping predators who use and abuse the famous and perhaps naive.

5-0 out of 5 stars enjoyable
I saw the film "That Hamilton Woman" as a teenager, and was curious about the real Emma. After reading mixed reviews about previous biographical works on Emma, I decided to wait it out, and I'm glad that I did. This book is wonderful, and I think that many people of all ages and backgrounds can identify with Emma's plight.I agree with the previous review that mentions some of the maybes, what ifs, and other uncertainties that are discussed in the book, particularly with Emma's early life. That said, I think that the author tried to put Emma's life in a context, giving the reader a picture of what typical life was for someone in her circumstances. Many of the specifics of Emma's early life are long buried, it's nice to have a glimpse of what life in Hawarden was like for a working class family, etc.

This book is a wonderful read; I found myself fretting over her ordeals, because the book is written in a way that really connects with the reader. If you like historical biographies, you'll probably enjoy this one.I consumed both Marie Antoinette and Georgiana very quickly, and this one was no different!

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting!!!
I was looking forward to reading a life of Lady Hamilton. The work was relatively well done; I did have some problems with statements made in the opening chapters.

`Henry probably had to'. "... and like most men in Ness he drank and probably beat his wife.""It is possible that Henry killed himself in a fit of drunken despair."

Why speculate? No one knows how Henry died or what type of man he was so why engage in this conjecture? It takes away from the work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Other characters revealed
There are several excellent reviews above. I shall not endeavor to repeat them. I just finished the book this morning, and I came away from it kind of melancholic. What a sad death for someone who had given so much to her country. She died an agonizing slow death at age 49 in France, of all places, ignored by the government, ignored by many of her so-called friends, and brutally ignored by Nelson's family. Nelson himself comes off not quite as heroic as his reputation would suggest and one obviously seeking glory and fame and Emma, for that matter, all for himself. His brother ignored the terms of his will and Emma as well, leaving her destitute, but with the facade of living well. Even her husband, Sir Hamilton, though he comes across as stoic and remarkably accepting of "the situation" between Emma and Nelson, lays the groundwork for her financial demise by claiming credit for the intelligence she provided to the British government. Everyone, it seems, was at her doorstep with their hands out, yet no one helped her when she needed it. I think she had some of her own issues. She wasn't terribly organized and was somewhat self-indulgent, but this was part of her overall charitable nature: She just couldn't say no, to herself or others. I've come away with a lot of respect for Emma Hamilton, and not much for anyone else who knew her, and even less respect for the press, which acted then as they do today, with no responsibility for what they say. An excellent read, (and good writing by Williams as well) even if it leaves you feeling a little bleak toward the end.

1-0 out of 5 stars Proof that this play is NOT Cardenio
Hamilton's arguments that the Second Maiden's Tragedy is really the lost Shakespeare play, Cardenio, are imaginative.Handwriting analysis is an interesting, but weak approach, as his methods and approach to this inexact art are at best questionable.Hamilton's suggestion that Shakespeare was credited for the play at one time is true; however, it is also true that scholars have determined that it was more likely that someone was trying to increase the value of the play by attributing it to Shakespeare.

Scholars have reviewed the play and have deemed it to be a play written by Middleton, not William Shakespeare. That would have been good enough to end most rationale assertions to the contrary, but Hamilton's attempt to reassert it as Shakespeare forces us to look closer.

First, as this play is a dramatization of Don Quixote De La Mancha, then how does the play coinside with the story line of Cardenio in Cervantes famous work. The answer? This play is about a different story line in the two volume, eight book work.Cardenio in Don Quixote is a separate story from the Second Maiden's story. That would make one seriously question why would someone dramatize a play about Cardenio but not use the story???

Second, and this is the killer for those who want A Second Maiden's Tragedy to be Cardenio, is the proof that the two plays were documented to be two DIFFERENT plays. How?Plays were registered in order to allow one person to lay claim to the rights of ownership of the play. This was done by paying a fee to register the name of the play with the Registrar's.Sometimes, to save paying two fees for two different plays, a person would give two titles as the same play.In this way someone could register, say, The Tempest OR Julius Caesar, and pay one fee for two plays. In this way they could claim both plays by paying only for one of them.

As it happens, The Second Maiden's Tragedy AND Cardenio were registered ON THE SAME DAY, BY THE SAME PERSON, AND AS TWO DIFFERENT PLAYS.If these were the same play as Hamilton proposes why would they pay the register fee TWICE, when the practice was to save money by registering two plays as one?

The fact is that A Second Maiden's Tragedy could not possibly be the lost play, Cardenio, and therefore the claim that Shakespeare wrote this play is weak at best.

5-0 out of 5 stars A mystery of the greatest import.Read it and weep
The reader above wants to know if there has been a refuation ofthe case Hamiltom makes in this book. The fact that it's in Shakesperae's writing cannot be refuted, but the fact that it's a Shakespeare play can, for the simple reason that until the handwriting was revealed to be what it quite clearly is, no one suspected Shakespeare as the author, and nearly everyone had it pegged sa Middleton (or someone very like him), which it is.T. S. Eliot believed that as a writer Middleton was second only to Shakespeare, but that's partly because his style was so very different and very much his own. What we have here is a
mansucript copied by a scribe who happens to have William
Shakespeare's handwriting. This would mean to someone like Sherlock Holmes that the man from Stratford was a scribe who happened to be lucky enoughto earn his living pretending to be a playwright in order to protect the identity of the true aurhtor. Thus without meaning to, Hamilton has offered some of the very best evidence there is that the modest William did not write the works attributed to him. This is clearly the reason Shakesperean scholars don't want to go near this book, which
contains one of the most important discoveries ever made in the history of Elizabethan scholarship.Read it and revel in its dramatic values, and then try to see if you can find any way to marry the style of this work with that of any of the Shakesperae plays. This would be easier if you could use the play developed from it, called Double Falsehood, which actually sounds a good deal more like Shakespeare than this version.
Next see what scholars had to say about this play before anyone thought it might be by Shakespeare. At the very least you'll have a lot of fun with this fascinating detective story, and maybe you'll do some of your own thinking about it instead of pretending that the truth about William Shakespeare is well established.Nothing could be farther from the truth. There's a great mystery here, and there always has been.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hamilton makes a solid prima facie case
I recently asked a friend, a Shakespeare professor, what she thought about the argument advanced in this book, which I had read perhaps a year previously.I was surprised to hear her say she wasn't acquainted with it.Hamilton seems to demonstrate soundly that the text known to us as the "Second Maiden's Tragedy" could originally have been titled "Cardenio" (a known "lost" Shakespeare play) since its plot appears to be drawn from a character of that name in "Don Quixote" and the current title appears to have been a working title applied by the royal censor.More dramatically, Hamilton (a nationally prominent forensic handwriting authority) argues that the handwriting in the survivng original manuscript of this play and that of Shakespeare's will are by the same man.Given Hamilton's stature in that field alone, I'd have expected the book to have drawn more attention.I don't know if the arguments in the book have been subjected to sound refutation by someone more expert than me, but to this journeyman Shakespeare buff he makes a solid enough case to bear hearing out ... Book Description
A pioneering classic in Dow Theory.

"If you are a serious student of investing, you owe it to yourself to 'go back to the future' and read this book." --Charles B. Carlson, Editor of "Dow Theory Forecast".

The Dow Theory is consistently one of the best strategies for understanding and predicting the stock market, and when it is applied as a method of predictable forecast, it is known as the "barometer." This finance classic offers tips and trends that William Hamilton observed over the years in the market, offering a view of market behavior that remains perpetually current. Hamilton, a contemporary of Charles H. Dow, presents a clear and in-depth discussion of the Dow Theory and its explanation of averages and affinity for predictable cycles of panic and prosperity.

Provides an analysis of the stock market and its history since 1897.
* This book is a springboard upon which current Dow Theory has thrived.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, fascinating book.
I have enjoyed reading this fascinating book. There are many books written about this battle, but majority of them are so nationally biased. If you are bored with reading the 100th book from the British perspective of this battle, read Americans, Germans and the Dutch. Then and only then you will get the full truth of what really happened.

I recommed reading Hamilton-Williams.

1-0 out of 5 stars Work of fiction
Is this still selling? It must be five years since the author's sources were checked out and shown to owe something to imagination. I checked one myself alleged to show Ziethen's line of comms - turned out to be an 1817 letter from the UK Foreign Secretary to Wellington in Paris about the locals getting restless. File it between Sharpe and any other fiction you might have - or the hamster might enjoy it. Better still, go to a library and check a few sources yourself. Shame on the publishers for putting this out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scholarship shedslight on what we thought was true.
"History is written by the winners." Or so it is thought. The winner of the Battle of Waterloo is supposed to be the British under the Duke of Wellington. Due to a common language, their version of history has been prevelant in the US. David Hamilton-Williams' scholarship gives us a view that the "winners" have left out. Why? Because with the light of truth, it does not let them be seen in the best light. This book helps to give credit where it is due. Meaning the Dutch & Belgian allies of the British and Prussia. It also exposes the highly biased version that the "winners" have perpetrated.

I am shocked to find this book in the bargain section of amazon's web-site. If this is were you found it, then you've found a gem at a great price! Buy it! I highly recommend all of the books by this author. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A 'tome', not just a book!
This is one of those spectacular books that makes you appreciate what a real book is! The books of Hamilton's collection of Greek vases - which convinced Wincklemann of the superiority of Greek art, inspired Wedgwood and were a linchpin of the Greek Revival - have been begging for a reprint, and this is a beautiful copy. Its HUGE, so it's going to need a table rather than a shelf - particularly if you pair it with Napoleon's 'Description of Egypt'!

Book Description

Sir William Hamilton is perhaps best-remembered for those lives adjacent to his own. British Ambassador to the court of Naples at the time of the rise of Napoleon, he could count European monarchs amongst his friends. His claim to a place in history, however, comes from his involvement in the most notorious love triangle of the time, that which existed between him, his second wife Emma, and the most celebrated of English naval heroes, Admiral Lord Nelson. Brian Fothergill's history places Sir William Hamilton at the centre of a stage for which he has long been suited. Hamilton carved a refined niche in Neopolitan society and this story details his passage through nobler times, from the scandal of William Beckford, to the earthquakes at Calabria, and on to the curious final chapter of his life where he was overshadowed by his second wife and her lover. Brian Fothergill was commended for this work by the Royal Society of Literature, being awarded the W.H. Heinman Award for non-fiction of outstanding literary merit.

The fragments of Greek painted pottery making up the 115 catalogue entries in this volume come from vases that were once part of Sir William Hamiltons prized second collection. About one third of that collection was lost when the ship transporting it back to England, HMS Colossus, struck a reef and sank off the Isles of Scilly in December 1798. The recovery of what remained of those vases, after almost 200 years on the seabed, took place between 1975 and 1979. The surviving fragments were formally acquired by the British Museum in 1981. ... Book Description

One of the most imaginative mathematicians of the nineteenth century, Sir William Rowan Hamilton (1805--1865) changed the course of modern algebra with his discovery of quaternions in 1843. Although Hamilton's work was largely theoretical, his ideas came to have invaluable practical applications with the advent of quantum mechanics in the twentieth century. In this acclaimed biography, Thomas L. Hankins brings together the many aspects of Hamilton's life and work -- from his significant contributions to mathematics, optics, and mechanics to his passion for metaphysics, poetry, and politics -- fully portraying the brilliant man whose faith and idealism guided him in everything he did.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor in quality and content
This book is poor in quality and content. You can find most of the stuff free if you just do simple research on websites. The photos are poor and appear to be nothing but very copied copies. Yes, the quality is that bad. Many are so blurred that you can't even make out the images. It is far too expensive but I expected -- for the price -- something that was scholarly and academic. It is not even on the kindergarten level and just a badly mixed stew of assumptions that offer no credibility on an important subject. The sad thing is that this book could have been a really good one. It's not.

1-0 out of 5 stars Random Acts of Nonsense
This "book" is an amalgamation of rumors, half-truths and legends that have circled this subject for years. Anectodes from "M.J.", "the informant" , "Mr.C" and "Mr.H" abound in random order and in a series of unconnected "events". There's plenty of psuedo science to go around including "anti-mass field physics". In oneastounding revelation, Hamilton calls upon debunked contactee George Adamski to explain how flying saucers operate! There is also the discredited Bob Lazar explaining the "work" he performed on captured flying saucers at Area 51.
After reading the works of Stanton Friedman, Bruce Maccabee,Bud Hopkins, Bill Moore and others of a serious bent, this book is best left on the bookstore shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Truth Behind The UFO Cover-Up
William F. Hamilton III is a well-known researcher of the many mysteries surrounding the UFO phenomenon. When the Phoenix Lights flap occurred back in the mid-90s, he was the premiere on-the-scene investigator, and he is a popular speaker on the UFO lecture circuit as well as a frequent guest expert on radio and television.

Originally published back in 1990, Hamilton's wonderful overview of the government cover-up of the alien incursion into our little blue planet, entitled "Cosmic Top Secret: America's Secret UFO Program," was reprinted by Global Communications a couple of years ago, and it's great to have such a true classic available once again.

One of the primary charms offered by Hamilton in "Cosmic Top Secret" is the enormous wealth of stories and anecdotes he has gathered on numerous aspects of the government's secret study of and relationship with the UFOs and their occupants. While Hamilton readily acknowledges that there is no concrete evidence to prove these stories beyond any reasonable doubt, their cumulative effect is to create a sense of awe and wonder in the reader, and to appeal to the imagination in ways that no science-fiction story ever could.

The many shadowy informants who step out of the darkness, each holding their own piece of the larger puzzle in their trembling hands, provide testimonies which coalesce into a picture of military and intelligence agency collusion with visitors from the stars whose interest in mankind may not be as benevolent as we would like to hope. Has our government sold us out to alien interests in exchange for help in making "out-of-this-world" advances in technology? Has the military agreed to allow for the abduction of human test subjects in order to pacify an invading alien force bent on the total takeover of our world? These are the kinds of issues Hamilton grapples with in the pages of "Cosmic Top Secret," all the while building a solid case for the idea that SOMETHING is going on in the covert black projects carried out by so many government and military agencies, something that is to be hidden from the unsuspecting eyes of the public at all costs.

Hamilton covers a lot of essential ground in "Cosmic Top Secret," such as the Roswell crash, Bob Lazar and the Area 51/Dreamland story, underground tunnels and bases and the rumored super-secret underground laboratory facility in Dulce, New Mexico. He presents story after story, taken from actual workers on the scene who for one reason or another have decided to go public with what they know, and the sheer strangeness of what those informants relate sometimes boggles the mind. The standard diminutive grays, for instance, don't merely show up in the dreamlike recollections of abductees, but are seen time and again working alongside human government employees in secret laboratories miles beneath the surface.

It is easy to be cynical about the government these days. One still reels from things like Richard Nixon's Watergate and George Bush's nonexistent Weapons of Mass Destruction. The history of lies told to the public that were later exposed as such seems to go on forever. Is it such a difficult leap to the idea that the government espouses a public policy of ridicule and denial regarding the UFO phenomenon, while secretly they are buried deep in an alien conspiracy that they may ultimately have no real control over?

If there is any truth to that unsettling scenario, then "Cosmic Top Secret" is one of the best sources to learn about it from. The book also includes several fascinating black and white photos of UFOs taken near sensitive military installations, as well as some intriguing speculative technological theorizing on the propulsion systems used by UFOs that are covertly being reverse-engineered for use in human aircraft. Hamilton does an excellent job of making the hard data comprehensible to the average layman.

Also included in the package is a reprint of the complete text of Hamilton's "Alien Magic," which is a further study of these same topics fleshed out with even more information about underground bases, government cooperation with a variety of alien races, and additional stories from those brave souls who dare to try to bring their devastating knowledge to the American public--before it's too late to do anything but surrender to those large, dark eyes that seem to already know us all too well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Overview of the Subject of Time Travel
William Hamilton III is one of those rarities in the field of paranormal research. Not only does he have a rich and varied background as a researcher and author, he also has the kind of credentials that make for credibility. Which includes his having been an Air Force Security Member charged with reporting directly to the National Security Agency. Over the years, a mystique has built up around Hamilton that makes what he has to say all the more intriguing.

With this latest book, "Time Travel Now! The Latest Information, Facts and Strange Stories on the Incredible Reality of Time Travel," Hamilton takes yet another step forward on the path to the understanding of phenomena just outside the reach of mankind's current knowledge.

The subject of time travel has fascinated the more inquiring segment of the population for over a century, beginning with the publication of H.G. Welles' "The Time Machine." It has since crossed over to a state of near respectability because of the latest findings of the New Physics, which includes many mainstream physicists daring to shout out loud that time travel is possible in real world terms. Hamilton discusses the current progress made toward understanding time, and even offers up some of the mathematical equations that are leading us to that belief, well beyond the old e=mc2.

Hamilton also delves into the claims of the late Lt.Col. Philip J. Corso, the author of "The Day After Roswell," who flatly declared that the ship that crashed out there in the New Mexico desert was in fact a time machine from our own future. Other methods of traveling in time, such as remote viewing and astral body travel, are also explored in detail, demonstrating how time travel may exist independently of any physical time machine such as the one described in Welles' novel.

In fact, Hamilton covers the subject so thoroughly that this book can honestly be said to be a state-of-the-art treatment of time travel for the lay reader. He even includes stories told to him exclusively for this book by friends and acquaintances that have had their own experiences being shunted forwards and backwards in time. That personal touch adds more sparkle to the book's overall charm.

I had the good fortune to meet Bill Hamilton at the 2005 National UFO Conference in Hollywood, where he delivered a lecture about "Time Travel Now." He communicated his knowledge on the subject in a deeply absorbing way that kept the audience spellbound.

Along with the book, you also get two CDs. One of them is an interview with Hamilton about his research into time travel. The second CD features the legendary paranormal author Brad Steiger, who discusses altered states of awareness that speed the participant into engaging in a form of mental time travel.

There is also a sizable section near the end of the book given over to Commander X, whose name will be instantly recognized by many in the reading public who have followed his pioneering work over the years. In "The Wonders of Time Travel," Commander X attempts to explain some of the methods by which the hardier souls among us might try to induce time travel through non-physical means, such as astral body travel. He claims that with enough practice, anyone can succeed at mastering the means to take a journey through time.

So in "Time Travel Now," while there is a wealth of solid information and informed speculation, there is also the appeal to the imagination of everyone who has ever contemplated being able to exert some kind of control over the passage of time. Would it truly serve us to be able to move into the past or future at will? Maybe reading William Hamilton's "Time Travel Now" will help you to "pass the time" while you continue to ponder the enormously complex nature of what life with travel travel would truly be like. ...
