Five star idea, one star execution, and way overpriced
Sir William Hamilton was the British Ambassador to the Bourbon court of Naples during the last 30 years or so of the eighteenth century. We have been fortunate in two fine biographies (Fothergill and Constantine) of this interesting courtier, but hitherto there have been no readily available collections of his correspondence. 'The Hamilton Letters' must be praisedfor repairing this lamentable oversight. Although confined almost exclusively to Hamilton'sdiplomatic correspondence withthe British Foreign Minister (Hamilton's nephew Charles Grenville) between the years 1797 and 1800, 'The Hamilton Letters' at least relates the most eventful years of Hamilton's long career.

Let it be known however, that my very great pleasure in the even partial publication of these documents is by no means unalloyed. In the preface, editors Davis and Capuano attempted a brief of the years encompassed in the dispatches. This preface is both unnecessarily lengthy and disordered, and providing no new arguments or useful summaries of the old ones it is not really worth reading. From this point it also becomes abundantly clear that the editors have inherited their opinions about the Neapolitan revolution of 1799 from the Italian historians of the Cuoco school, which is to say they have an axe to grind with British and royalists. They grind this axe in Hamilton's back whenever possible, flaunting his vices and largely ignoring his virtues, both in the preface and in the footnotes.I do admit that sometimes the footnotes are helpful (the biographical notes in particular) but often they are either inapplicable, or more frequently, serve to emphasize some failing of Hamilton's, real or imaginary.

My other complaint is that this book was evidently rushed into publication, by which I mean not proofread at all, ever. The preface in particular is so typo- ridden that I believe it to be a very rough draft, an impression that its general disorganization definitely fosters. At least one book referenced in it is mistitled: 'Losing Nelson' by Barry Unsworth reads 'Losing Naples'. These blunders fortunately appear mostly in the preface and biblography, and should be no more than annoyances, but if I am expected to pay $50 for a book, it had better be more than a first draft.

Despite these failures, I give 'The Hamilton Letters' three stars, because however the editors may try, they cannot extinguish Hamilton's keen observations and wit, and because I hope to see a more complete and less revisionist edition of Hamilton's correspondence in the future. This is a valuable companion to Fothergill and Constantine, but buy it used; DO NOT pay full price. ... Read more
