Product Description
Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:MICROGRAPH1A.EXTRACTS FROM THE PREFACE.IT is the great prerogative of Mankind above other Creatures, that we are not only able to behold the works of Nature, or barely to sustein our lives by them, but we have also the power of considering, comparing, altering, assisting, and improving them to various uses. And as this is the peculiar priviledge of humane Nature in general, so is it capable of being so far advanced by the helps of Art, and Experience, as to make some Men excel others in their Observations, and Deductions, almost as much as they do Beasts. By the addition of such artificial Instruments and methods, there may be, in some manner, a reparation made for the mischiefs, and imperfection, mankind has drawn upon it self, by negligence, and intemperance, and a wilful and superstitious deserting the Prescripts and Rules of Nature, whereby every man, both from a deriv'd corruption, innate and born with him, and from his breeding and converse with men, is very subject to slip into all sorts of errors. The only way which now remains for us to recover some degree of those former perfections, seems to be, by rectifying the operations of the Sense, the Memory, and Reason, since upon the evidence, the strength, the integrity, and the right correspondence of all these, all the light, by which our actions are to be guided, is to be renewed, and all our command over things is to be establisht. It is therefore most worthy of our consideration, to recollect their several defects, that so we may the better understand how to supply them, and by what assistances we may Marge their power, and secure them in performing their particular duties. As for the actions of our Senses, we cannot but observe them to be in many particulars much outdone by those of other Creatures, and ... ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but don't spend a lot of money for this book.
This book serves as a quick introduction to lots of important topics. The writing is clear, with many relevant issues raised, and commented on intelligently. The author does not go into depth, however, with topics usually getting two to four pages. As I said in the title, don't spend a lot of money on this; also, other books may
address the same issues (for non-experts) but in more depth.

4-0 out of 5 stars Full of illuminating examples
I used to abhor any mathematics books that promote the idea of "explaining mathematics without equations."I now appreciate the difficulty of making statistical ideas clear in plain English (try explain "sampling errors" or "with-in variation" to your friends without writing down any equations), and Hooke sets such a good example in the book by giving so many illuminating examples from so many fields. ... Product Description
Musical instruments have been used as models for understanding the human character from the 17th century onwards. The author explores the implications of this model: how someone's character "plays" or "is played upon", as well as the kinds of "music" it plays. This concept has contributed significantly to the development of theory in the bio-medical, neuro and cognitive sciences, and this account provides an important chapter in the history of the philosophy of science. ... Product Description
This book is a historical-epistemological study of one the mostconsequential idea of early modern celestial mechanics: Robert Hooke'sproposal to "compoun[d] the celestial motions of the planets of adirect motion by the tangent & an attractive motion towards a centralbody," a proposal which Isaac Newton adopted and realized in hisPrincipia. Hooke's Programme was revolutionary both cosmologically andmathematically. It presented "the celestial motions," the proverbialsymbol of stability and immutability, as a process of continuouschange, and prescribed only parameters of rectilinear motions andrectilinear attractions for calculating their closed curved orbits.Yet the traces of Hooke's construction of his Programme for theheavens lead through his investigations in such earthly disciplines asmicroscopy, practical optics and horology, and the mathematical toolsdeveloped by Newton to accomplish it appear no less local andgoal-oriented than Hooke's lenses and springs. This transgression of the boundaries between the theoretical, experimental and technological realms is reminiscent of Hooke's ownfree excursions in and out of the circles occupied bygentlemen-philosophers, university mathematicians, instrument makers, technicians and servants. It presents an opportunity to examine thesocial and epistemological distinctions, relations and hierarchiesbetween those realms and their inhabitants, and compels a criticalassessment of the philosophical categories they embody. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great intellectual adventure
In this marvelously written, well-documented book, Ofer Gal presents a philosophico-historical account of one of the greatest intellectual adventures in the history of science. Gal follows the tense correspondence between these two great men, Hook and Newton, tells the fascinating story of their social relationships - a story of class and prestige, competition and envy, mathematics and experimentation - and offers a philosophical analysis of the events, a pragmatic analysis which sheds a new light, a new sympathetic light, on Hook's role in this drama. For anyone who is interested in the history of science, or, quite simply, in science in general, this is a must read. ... Read more

The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
Medical theory and practice of the 1700s developed rapidly, as is evidenced by the extensive collection, which includes descriptions of diseases, their conditions, and treatments. Books on science and technology, agriculture, military technology, natural philosophy, even cookbooks, are all contained here.
