And as this is the peculiar priviledge of humane Nature in general, so is it capable of being so far advanced by the helps of Art, and Experience, as to make some Men excel others in their Observations, and Deductions, almost as much as they do Beasts. Okay, but don't spend a lot of money for this book.
This book serves as a quick introduction to lots of important topics.The writing is clear, with many relevant issues raised, and commented on intelligently.The author does not go into depth, however, with topics usually getting two to four pages. As I said in the title, don't spend a lot of money on this; also, other books may
address the same issues (for non-experts) but in more depth.

Full of illuminating examples
I used to abhor any mathematics books that promote the idea of "explaining mathematics without equations."I now appreciate the difficulty of making statistical ideas clear in plain English (try explain "sampling errors" or "with-in variation" to your friends without writing down any equations), and Hooke sets such a good example in the book by giving so many illuminating examples from so many fields. ... This book is a historical-epistemological study of one the mostconsequential idea of early modern celestial mechanics: Robert Hooke'sproposal to "compoun[d] the celestial motions of the planets of adirect motion by the tangent & an attractive motion towards a centralbody," a proposal which Isaac Newton adopted and realized in hisPrincipia. Hooke's Programme was revolutionary both cosmologically andmathematically. It presented "the celestial motions," the proverbialsymbol of stability and immutability, as a process of continuouschange, and prescribed only parameters of rectilinear motions andrectilinear attractions for calculating their closed curved orbits.Yet the traces of Hooke's construction of his Programme for theheavens lead through his investigations in such earthly disciplines asmicroscopy, practical optics and horology, and the mathematical toolsdeveloped by Newton to accomplish it appear no less local andgoal-oriented than Hooke's lenses and springs.This transgression of the boundaries between the theoretical,experimental and technological realms is reminiscent of Hooke's ownfree excursions in and out of the circles occupied bygentlemen-philosophers, university mathematicians, instrument makers,technicians and servants. A great intellectual adventure
In this marvelously written, well-documented book, Ofer Gal presents a philosophico-historical account of one of the greatest intellectual adventures in the history of science. Gal follows the tense correspondence between these two great men, Hook and Newton, tells the fascinating story of their social relationships - a story of class and prestige, competition and envy, mathematics and experimentation - and offers a philosophical analysis of the events, a pragmatic analysis which sheds a new light, a new sympathetic light, on Hook's role in this drama.
