Excerpt: Edwin Powell Hubble (November 20, 1889 September 28, 1953) was an American astronomer who profoundly changed our understanding of the universe by demonstrating the existence of galaxies other than our own, the Milky Way. He also discovered that the degree of "Doppler shift" (specifically "redshift") observed in the light spectra from other galaxies increased in proportion to a particular galaxy's distance from Earth. This relationship became known as Hubble's law, and helped establish that the known universe is expanding. Hubble is often incorrectly credited with discovering the Doppler shift in the spectra of galaxies, but this phenomenon had been observed by other astronomers in the 1910s, including Vesto Slipher at the Lowell Observatory. Slipher had reported observing blueshift as well as redshift in the spectra of spiral galaxies, indicating motion of their arms both toward and away from Earth respectively, and thus the rotation of such galaxies. Measurements of the redshifts of galaxies and analysis of their significance had also been conducted by James Keeler at the Lick and Allegheny observatories, and William Campbell at the Lick Observatory. Edwin Hubble was born to an insurance executive in Marshfield, Missouri, and moved to Wheaton, Illinois, in 1889. In his younger days he was noted more for his athletic prowess than his intellectual abilities, although he did earn good grades in every subject except for spelling. He won seven first places and a third place in a single high school track ... Read more

Product Description
The much-anticipated follow-up to "Hubble's Universe", this breathtakingly illustrated history of the universe from the big bang to the present presents stunning photographs of vents that previous generations of astronomers could only picture in their mind's eye--and which non-astronomers could not even imagine. 50 color illustrations Online publicity.Amazon.com Review
When most people hear the name "Hubble," they immediately think of NASA's costly snafu involving the flawed optics on the billion-dollar Hubble Space Telescope. Award-winning science writer John Gribbin and research astronomer Simon Goodwin have done their best to honorably exonerate pioneering astronomer Edwin Hubble's name by putting together this thoughtfully documented collection of eye-grabbing images, primarily from the now-corrected HST but also from other space- and ground-based telescopes and detectors.

Edwin Hubble made one of the most dramatic discoveries in all of science: that of the existence of galaxies beyond the Milky Way. This laid the groundwork for understanding the very origins of the universe (the Big Bang). For many years, evidence supporting the Big Bang hasn't been much to look at--just blurry photographs and squiggles from electronic detectors. But the current crop of detectors and telescopes, chief among them the Hubble, has changed all of that: this book takes advantage of that technology to map out the origins of our universe with a dazzling series of extraterrestrial images. Tracing the history of time through space, this series starts with distant quasars and then zooms in through swirling galaxies and murky nebulas, finally arriving back in our own solar system. These last shots, taken largely by somewhat outdated probes not far from home, are surprisingly among the most striking in the book. --Paul Hughes ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Hubble the Man, not the Telescope
The first thing to note about this book is that it is not about the Hubble Space Telescope, but about our universe. It's subtitled "Hubble's Universe", because Edwin Hubble was the first astronomer to show that universe was composed of many galaxies and not just the Milky Way.In other words, he might be considered the founder of modern cosmology.

In this book, the authors present many of the classic photographs of the universe, the Milky Way and the solar system plus many new pictures as well.Accompanying each photograph is a detailed description of what was discovered and why is important. While some of the these photographs are over twenty-five old, they have been digitally enhanced, but still show the graininess associated with the early planetary space probes. In addition, there is a nice introductory section, which describes many of the discoveries from the past hundred years.

In general, I found most of the photographs contained in the book to be a good representation of the objects found in our universe. The photographs cover the extreme, from very distant galaxies to the Earth and the Moon.

If you are looking for a good book that summarizes the universe, Milky Way and the solar system in pictures, this book would good addition to your collection. If you are looking for new photographs or new information you will not find much in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent description of how the Universe came into being.
While the book is not heavy on text, its descriptions about the formation of stars, nebulae, galaxies and the universe in general are easy to read and understand. The supporting full page pictures at right are also welldescribed. It is an excellent laymans guide to explaining how our world andthe material that makes us who we are, came from the stars.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice big pictures but many not from Hubble. Text is skimpy.
With the title containing Hubble and Origins, I was hoping for lots of new information about what the latest data from Hubble ST would reveal about our origins. Instead the book is a compendium of very nice large format color photos of galaxies stars and the planets in our Solar system, accompanied by one paragraph captions - and a lot of white space where more information and analysis of "origins" could have been.I recommend this book for coffee table perusal, not for the serious reader of cosmology. Product Description

In the twenties, Edwin Hubble identified the galactic structure and expansion of the Universe. Many consider his discoveries as important as the work of Albert Einstein.Hubble Time explores the private lives of Edwin and Grace Hubble and their compelling legacy.

This stylish “autobiography” is written by Hubble’s fictional granddaughter, Jane.It contains excerpts from Grace Hubble’s actual diaries as well as previously unpublished material by the Hubbles’ intimate friends Aldous Huxley and Anita Loos.In her nightly journal entries, Jane meditates on her grandparents’ clever set, which encapsulated the style and wit of Los Angeles in the thirties and forties, and she reflects wryly on living alone in Los Angeles today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Trying to Deal with Family When the Cosmos Takes Them Away
Whoever wrote the description above didn't read the same book I did. Or maybe they are just ever so much smarter than the rest of us. This book lays out some information on Hubble and also acts as a meditation on family and relationships over time. The use of the Hubble material works as a metaphor for the place we all have in the universe. It is small when seen in light years, but it is great to each of us, individually. As far as lauding Hubble goes, he was worthy of lauding. As far as the low self esteem of the narrative voice goes, she doesn't have low self esteem. She just has problems with her folks. Wow, talk about over-writing. That guy who wrote the descrip of this book has some serious and sad problems. Bezzi only wrote this novel, and has since left this world. Hopefully he has had a chance to speak with Edwin Hubble. I feel the book is well worth reading. But, hey, what do I know, I'm just an average person. I learned a lot about myself from this book. I learned a few things about Hubble I didn't know. ... Read more

This audiobook helps students gain perspective on the scientific climate surrounding history's greatest scientific discoveries and theories. This series is an eye-opening addition to any library.

Hubble’s discovery of the Big Bang is one of the most important in astronomy and physics. It taught us where the universe came from and how it might end. Students will learn how Hubble’s early, unprecedented photographs of pulsars served as one of the first clues along the path that led him to the discovery of the Big Bang. Listeners will also see how Hubble’s discovery opened up new doors to information about the universe. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Suitable report material for grades 3-5
Rosen's 'Primary sources of Revolutionary Scientific Discoveries and Theories' set adds an important new contribution to the series with Hubble And The Big Bang, a 64-page survey of both Hubble and his contributions to astronomy. Opening with an introduction to astronomy as a whole, chapters quickly zero in on Hubble's theories and contribution to cosmology and conclude with a summary timeline of events, primary source transcriptions, a bibliography, primary source image list and index. Intriguing color illustrations pepper Hubble And The Big Bang but the text is the meat of this coverage and is suitable report material for grades 3-5. Even more notable is the fact that Hubble is seldom awarded his own in-depth coverage for this age group.

This is great information. The book is of very average production quality and design, though. You would be lucky to find a copy at all now. Essential reading on Hubble and the history of astronomy in the early to middle 20th century.
