4-0 out of 5 stars A very ineteresting and informative work
Huntington is a household name for anyone in Southern California. The name is everywhere in Los Angeles due to the tremendous influence this metropolitan entrepreneur had on the development of one of America'slargest cities.

His start in big business was with the Southern PacificRailroad Company, where his uncle served as the company's president. Heshowed tremendous skill and quickly ascended in the business world tobecome one of the most powerful businessmen in the United States.

Although he only had a high school education, Henry Huntington possessedincredible business savvy. He succeeded in almost everything he attempted, but his work in Southern California was the crown jewel.

Friedrickspoints out each of the major events in Henry Huntington's life, both at thepersonal and professional level. He discusses both Huntington's amazingcontributions to Southern California and his scandalous personal life.

Excerpt: John Robert Silber (born August 15, 1926) is an American academic and politician. He was president of Boston University. On a conservative platform, he unsuccessfully ran as the Democratic candidate for governor of Massachusetts in the 1990 election and lost to the moderate Republican William Weld. Silber was trained in and taught philosophy. He has written two books, one, Straight Shooting, is part memoir and part political prescription; the second, Architecture of the Absurd is a 128-page denunciation of the work of some contemporary architects. John Silber was born in San Antonio, Texas, the second son of Paul G. Silber, a German Jewish immigrant architect, and Jewell Joslin Silber, an elementary school teacher. His father's business collapsed during the Great Depression. At Trinity University in San Antonio, John Silber met Kathryn Underwood, daughter of farmers in Normanna, Texas. The couple married in 1947 and had eight children, one son and six daughters, and they adopted another son. Their first-born son, and daughter, were born before 1955. Five more daughters were born in the next 11 years. Their first-born son, David Silber, died of AIDS at age 41 at their home in December 1994. Silber received his M.A. in 1952 and worked as a teaching assistant while pursuing a doctoral degree. Peter H. Hare, Philosophy Professor Emeritus, at SUNY State University of New York at Buffalo remembers Silber as a teaching assistant at Yale in the mid-1950s while Hare was still an undergraduate. Hare wrote, "George Schrader was the lecturer in the introductory course where John Silber was the TA leadi...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1381142 ... Read more

He then attended the Army War College and after graduation served as a staff school instructor. Short commanded the 1st Division at Fort Hamilton, New York, from 1938-1940 before commanding the 4th Army Corps and the 1st Army Corps. He earned the Distinguished Service Medal and was considered to have had a successful career at that time, especially in light of his promotions during peace time. On December 17, 1941 General Short was removed from command of Pearl Harbor as a result of the attack. Short was ordered back to Washington, D.C. by Army Chief of Staff George C.
