Excerpt: The Elim Pentecostal Church (EPC) is a UK-based Pentecostal Christian denomination. George Jeffreys (18891962), a Welshman, founded the Elim Pentecostal Church in Monaghan, Ireland in 1915. Jeffreys was an evangelist with a Welsh Congregational church background. He was converted at age 15 during the Welsh Revival of 1904. Alexander A. Boddy, Vicar of All Saints, Monkwearmouth, Sunderland invited him to preach at his International Pentecostal Convention in Sunderland in May 1913. Between 1915 and 1934, Jeffreys was extremely active as a revivalist, and preached to large crowds throughout the United Kingdom. The church was brought together, first as the Elim Evangelistic Band, but this was changed to Elim Foursquare Gospel Alliance when the Deed Poll was registered in April 1934. The name 'Elim' was taken from the account in the Book of Exodus, chapter 15, verse 27, where the Israelites, leaving the bondage of Egypt under the leadership of Moses, found an oasis called Elim: "Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve wells of water and seventy palm trees; so they camped there by the waters." This represented a place of refreshing and it was thought appropriate for a revival movement at that time. Differences of opinion over Jeffrey's open aspousal of British Israelism and disputes on church governance led Jeffreys to withdraw from the Elim Pentecostal Church in 1939 and to form the Bible-Pattern Church Fellowship in Nottingham, which founded other churches throughout England until the 1960s, but that now only continues as a small fellowship. The presidency of Elim then passed to...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=435896 ... Read more

Excerpt: George Jeffreys, 1st Baron Jeffreys of Wem, PC (15 May 1645 18 April 1689), also known as "The Hanging Judge", became notable during the reign of King James II, rising to the position of Lord Chancellor (and serving as Lord High Steward in certain instances). Jeffreys was born at the family estate of Acton Hall, Wrexham in Wales, the sixth son of John and Margaret Jeffreys. His grandfather, John Jeffreys (died 1622) had been Chief Justice of the Anglesey circuit of the Great Sessions and his father, another John Jeffreys (16081691) was a Royalist during the English Civil War and fought for Charles I but was reconciled to The Protectorate and served as a Sheriff in 1655. His elder brothers were to become people of note; Thomas, later Sir Thomas (knighted in 1686) was to become British Consul in Spain and the Knight of Alcantara, and William became a vicar at Holt, Wales from 16681675. His younger brother, James, made a good ecclesiastical career, becoming Vice-Dean of Canterbury in 1685. George was educated at Shrewsbury School from 16521659, his grandfather's old school, where he was periodically tested by Philip Henry, a friend of his mother's. He attended St Paul's School, London from 16591661 and Westminster School, London from 16611662. He became an undergraduate at Trinity College Cambridge University in 1662, leaving after one year without graduating, and entering the Inner Temple for law in 1663. In 1667, he had married Sarah Neesham or Needham, by whom he had seven children before her death in 1678. She was the daughter of the poor vicar from Stoke d'Abernon. There's a family legend that Jeffreys planned to marry a daughter of the rich City merchant and had a secret correspondence with her, which Sarah her companion willingly attended... 3-0 out of 5 stars "Just the facts ma'am"
This book is a difficult read. Most writers infuse something of a personality into their writing, even a textbook. I read a lot of books, mostly non-fiction (programming books, networking books) with some fiction thrown in here and there. The authors may know about the subject and clearly they do, but I found myself reading the text in a monitone voice and my eyes glazing over every couple of sentences. Thats because each sentence is just another fact, freeze dried and stuck next to another fact and eventually you get a very wordy paragraph. Add them all together and you get pages and pages of facts.

I felt like someone took a vacuum and sucked out all of the life out of the text. Seriously, I was tempted to look at the preface to see if the authors added the instructions to "just add water before reading".It really is that dry.

If that is your reading style, then this book is for you. I couldn't read more than a couple of pages before having to take a break.

4-0 out of 5 stars Expect a textbook, not a real "how to" lesson
I used this book for an online course and I really felt like I was slogging through it.Obviously it's a textbook, but there are probably books out there that get to the point in fewer words. Most chapters are 30-50 pages long, and though some of the examples are helpful, overall the impact of the material is lost in paragraphs that never end.I would say if you aren't in a course that is using this text as a supplement, buy something else. The examples aren't good enough to give you a sense of database structure or systems diagrams without some real world comparison.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's OK
The data itself is fine.It does explain the information in an understandable way.

Unfortunately, the font is tiny to make up for the large parts of information in the margins. Also, there is a slight shine to the paper itself which gives a glare when reading the text.

4-0 out of 5 stars Extremely thorough treatment of Systems Analysis...
This summer, I took a class in which we read this entire book. Yes, all 600+ pages of text (thankfully we weren't tested on the index). This HUGE book presents a very thorough treament of the Systems Development Life Cycle and the profession of Systems Analysis. From Project Planning to System Maintenance, hardly a detail gets shunned.

The book overall emphasizes the traditional SDLC, but weaves in some discussion of newer methodologies such as: Extreme Programming, Object Oriented design, CASE tools, and other agile methodologies. And if anyone wants to know what a Systems Analyst does day to day on the job, Appendix 1 spells it out pretty thoroughly. Anyone thinking of becoming a Systems Analyst should at least read this appendix, if not the entire book.

The book doesn't emphasize customer service to a great degree. As a working Systems Analyst, I find that customer service skills come in handy every single day. Appendix 1 does mention this skill, but not in an overly detailed manner. Information Systems in general deemphasizes the customer side of things ("User error!!!" still gets mockingly shouted across many help desks and support centers), which accounts for some of the problems that the industry as a whole faces (sometimes we're a little too easy to outsource). So a little more on the importance of customer service might have improved the book.

In the end, this book is a textbook. The going gets rough in many places as details pile upon details. But to understand some of the complexities of system development, a detailed approach probably represents the best way to go. So if you're looking for pleasure reading, look elsewhere. But if you want a detailed, granular, sometimes heady, complex treatment of the analysis side of Systems Development, this book offers more than you'll need for the traditional approach to the SDLC. Those looking for details on XP or OOP should look elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good S.A.D Book
I used this book to learn system analysis and design while taking graduate course. The book is well-written and the layout is pretty good. The authors broke down the information in such way you can understand easily. The book also has some exercises that help you practice what you learn. I kept the book and plan to use it a reference. I will recommend it if you are serious about learning System Analysis and Design.

This volume, edited by Jeffrey P. Greenman and George Kalantzis, marks another compilation from the Wheaton Theology Conference. 2009's event produced the wealth of work represented here exploring the theological foundations for a faithful approach to the church practices that contribute to spiritual formation, that is, to our sanctification in the power of the Holy Spirit. Including essays from keynote speakers Dallas Willard and Gordon Fee as well as contributing essays by noted presenters such as Chris Hall, David Gushee, Linda Cannell, Cherith Fee Nordling and Lawrence Cunningham, this book offers a stimulating exploration of the historical, biblical and theological dimensions of spiritual formation. It will be of special interest to those who serve as pastors, spiritual directors, church ministry leaders and Christian educators. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars We NEED Spiritual Formation
This collection of papers originally presented at the 2009 Wheaton Theology Conference aims to set a perspective on the topic of Spiritual Formation. We may have heard of this phrase - it has become a buzz word amongst some - but what does it mean and what kind of theology does it espouse? This book answers that question. Each chapter covers an area ofSpiritual Formation or Disciplines, providing the reader a framework that is theological, historical and practical.

Too often we divorce spiritual formation from theology, and theology from the spirit. We need to merge them back together so that we have a living theology which is simultaneously forming the work ofChrist in us and in the world, through and in the experience of the Holy Spirit.

While all the chapters were excellent, Kelly Kapic's chapter on John Owen (Evangelical Holiness) and his concept of holiness was especially good, showing how the puritan Owen's approach to holiness wasboth Christ-centered AND Spirit-enabled.

Christopher Hall gives a very helpful chapter on Lectio Divina outlining the benefits of slow and intentional reading of scripture not for analysis sake, but for receiving and bathing in the word of God.

The Church needs to get serious about spiritual formation and growth. Too few christians today take seriously the need to spend time (significant time) in the scriptures and in prayer before the living God. We must become disciplined is spending time, daily, immersed in and soaking up the words of life found in the scriptures, and allowing that to shape a living and spirit empowered theology which translates itself into Christ centered living, individually and corporately.

This book is a wonderful resource on Spiritual Formation and should be used by Pastors and Church Leaders as a foundation for building their own theology of Spiritual Formation and then as a launch pad for teaching their congregations to do likewise.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent theology of spiritual formation
It's not often that you can get a group of front-ranking theologians and scholars together to discuss spiritual formation, spiritual theology and what "life in the Spirit" means. But the Wheaton Theology Conference in 2009 did just that and this volume is the result: Life in the Spirit: Spiritual Formation in Theological Perspective . The book has good scholars and some great topics, and it never strays from developing a theology of spiritual formation.

Gordon Fee, Dallas Willard, Lawrence Cunningham, Kelly Kapic, Chris Hall and Susan Phillips -- to name some. I really like the topics: definition by Jeffrey Greenman, the Spirit by Gordon Fee, the soteriology that shapes how we see spiritual formation with Dallas Willard, Kelly Kapic on John Owen, George Kalantzis on the desert monastics, Bruce Hindmarsh on evangelical spirituality, James Wilhoit on centering prayer, Cherith Fee Nordling on singing and David Gushee on sanctity of life... yes, this is a great roster.

Jeffrey Greenman's opening definition can't be improved upon: "Spiritual formation is our continuing response to the reality of God's grace shaping us into the likeness of Jesus Christ, through the work of the Holy Spirit, in the community of faith, for the sake of the world" (24).

This would be a great book for pastors and for a pastoral staff to ponder together for a year; and a fine textbook for seminary classes. ... Read more
