4-0 out of 5 stars Chilling realism
"Instead of being so amiable and demure on our first date, I should have taken a gun with me and shot him." Now there's a hook that pulls you in. The author is writing about her future husband.

"Susan married Frank Perez and began twenty years of chaos and uncertainty with the unstable man. After two children, a nasty divorce and reconciliation, she agrees to move to Arizona to find peace in desert living. She cannot begin to foresee the nightmare they will soon be living."

This is a true story from a lady who's been there. A lady with an excellent command of the language. A lady who can write. A lady with a wonderfully understated style that leaves nothing out but which makes you think instead of preaching to you. Every victim has his or her own story. A story which only he or she can tell. Be grateful that Susan Shelley has shared her story with us.

Susan and Nancy are fraternal twins who were adopted. Nancy dated Frank once and decided he was a bit too domineering for her tastes. But Nancy thought he would be a good match for Susan. The rest is an ugly history. Even from the first chapters, hindsight tells us that the signs were all there. But without the benefit of hindsight, would you have known?

Susan was a good young girl, raised in a strongly Christian home, with a beautiful and naive heart. She just didn't know what to expect of a marriage. She didn't know that such dominance is abnormal.

Frank Joseph Perez's family is from Spain and Puerto Rico. His grandmother was born in the Canary Islands. This does not matter to Susan's domineering mother. As far as she's concerned, they're all Mexican trash. She has plenty of other ammunition in her arsenal besides blatant racism. Frank smokes, and he loves guns and hunting.

Just to get out of that environment, Susan made the tragic mistake of marrying Frank. They changed the planned June wedding to a Las Vegas elopement on New Years Day, 1968. Frank tells of his first wife, who his father forced him to marry because he got her pregnant. They were both teenagers, too young, and it didn't work out. Frank blames his father, not himself, for that mess. Remember what I said about hindsight?

Part of what makes this book so special is that it's about life. It's not a simple story of a good woman and a bad man. He, too, is a victim, and the reader feels his pain. I know this was hard for the author to write. It's the first book in a three-part series. It works quite well as a stand-alone novel, and it also makes me anxious to read the next book.

Don't start reading it unless you have time to finish it. Not before bed, not on the bus to work. You won't be able to stop yourself from turning the pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Merriam-Webster's Secretarial Handbook (Third Edition
this is a great book i used this book at home and in my office.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Office Reference
If you need to know the correct format for an office document or the correct way to address an official, it is in this book. This book covers the traditional means of communication as well as the electronic arena. It is well organized and very easy to use.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent desktop reference for secretaries and assistants
A superb one-stop reference volume covering topics highly relevant to the duties of secretaries and personal/admininstrative assistants, this handbook has withstood the test of time. The third edition dates from the early 1990s, but most of the many tasks treated comprehensively in this handbook have changed very little over the years: forms of address, basic grammar and punctuation rules, formal business correspondence, organization of meetings and travel, postal mail procedures, telephone etiquette and procedures, and so on.A few chapters that are very technology-sensitive (computers and word-processing equipment, desktop publishing, etc.) have dated considerably, but the handbook overall is so useful that it's worth having within arm's reach in just about any office-for both secretaries and their managers.

In an increasingly global business environment, this handbook is also very useful for assistants and secretaries outside the U.K. and U.S. who must deal with English-speaking colleagues on a regular basis by phone, e-mail, or mail.

5-0 out of 5 stars I bought it flowers for Secretaries Day !!
We are a small firm, and I am a licensed professional who types his own correspondence, contracts for clients, transmittals, etc.. Because the styles and forms of business letters have changed since I was in college, I decided I needed a good reference to help me with the tricky stuff that comes along occassionally.

This book did the job. Whether I need to know how to address a letter to an elected official, or pressure someone to pay an invoice, the Secretarial Handbook covers it. From punctuation to collation, this is the best single office reference I have ever used.

If you do your own administrative tasks, buy one for yourself for National Secretaries (Administrative Professionals) Day.

Description:
Cold-season filling using much coarser sediments than the native caused dramatic suppression of beach macroinvertebrates, demonstrably degrading habitat value for foraging shorebirds. As a dual consequence of persistent steepening of the foreshore, which translated to reduction in habitat area by 14-29%, and disturbance-induced depression of invertebrate densities on filled beaches, abundances of Donax spp. and haustoriid amphipods averaged less than 10% of control levels. Donax spp. is the biomass dominant and a key prey for higher trophic levels. Haustoriids lack pelagic larvae. Recovery on filled beaches was not initiated by either taxon during the March-November sampling. Emerita talpoida, an order of magnitude less abundant than Donax spp. on control beaches, exhibited a pattern of initial depression on filled beaches but recovered by mid summer. Polychaetes, mostly the small Scolelepis squamata, experienced a warm-season bloom of equal magnitude on filled and control beaches. Summertime recruitment of predatory ghost crabs appeared inhibited on filled beaches, perhaps by persistent shell hash. Intertidal shell cover on filled beaches averaged 25-50% in mid summer as compared to 6-8% on control beaches. Largely in response to prey depression, but perhaps also to surface shell armoring and/or coarsening of sediments, shorebird (mostly sanderling) use plummeted by 70-90% on filled beaches until November. Thus, despite likely adaptations to natural sediment dynamics, the high intensity of sediment deposition, cumulative spatial scope (10.8 km), and unnaturally coarse shelly character of the Bogue Banks beach nourishment resulted in a perturbation that exceeded biotic resistance and degraded the trophic transfer function of this highly productive habitat for at least one warm season. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Purchasing & Supply Management
This book was chosen by my professor because she felt it was the best one out there. However, I found the content hard to understand. The writers were very technical in their jargon and for someone new to procurement, it was difficult to understand at times what their point was. Also, the use of "as to" is used very frequently in the book and I found the writing style to be annoying. Many times I would read a paragraph only to get to the end and have to read it again because I had no idea what concept I was supposed to be understanding.I did walk away with a general knowledge of procurement after this book, but it did not come easily.Maybe it is the subject, but this was extremely boring.

Captured during the ill-fated Allied Offensive in Italy in January 1944, Army Private Gerhard Johnson did not expect to ever see his family or Elaine, the only woman he ever loved, again. As a POW, he endured 15 months of hell, losing almost half his body weight and very close to death when liberated by the British. Meanwhile, back home in Central Wisconsin, his mother Anna wrote letters, sent Red Cross packages and filled a scrapbook in an amazing effort to keep her son "alive" as long as possible. ...
