Product Description
This title tells the story of how "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens came to be written - out of Dickens's deep conviction that Christian people must help the poor and needy - and of how it has been taken to people's hearts, from first publication to the latest Muppet version. The first few chapters set the scene and introduce the book, describing how and why it was written. Then comes Dickens's text. The story of what has happened since rounds off the book. The Dickens text has the original Leech line engravings. Other illustrations are drawn from different editions and versions, including some film stills and so on. ... Read more

Product Description
Providing a background to current events affecting NATO, this book lists considerations on which today's and tomorrow's decisions have to be based. Its conclusion is that the unfreezing of the cold war challenges those involved to be actors, rather than remaining reluctant spectators, in the shaping of a common future; that West Europeans in particular have the responsibility to develop economic, political and security structures which will be a beacon for the East, whilst encouraging the Unites States to remain committed to their continent. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars RS Surtees is the master of foxhunting fiction

RS Surtees is the indispensable source or foxhunting fans, and of all Surtees books Mr Sponges Sporting Tour is an excellent primer for all the others. It is sport-based, with excellent characterizations of the life and people in that time.
The author follows the habits of the times in attaching names to people that are meant to describe their character, which can be a little wearing to the modern reader. But in terms of the modern reader understanding the appeal of foxhunting and the methods (and madness) of the original era, this book can't be beat.
As to the book itself, Nonsuch has produced a beautiful little volume with the heft to make one feel he is reading something worthwhile.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mr Sponge in 100 Words
A picaresque, following 'Soapey' Sponge - a sportsman but not quite agentleman - as he foxhunts and fortune-hunts his way around England. Heexploits (as Surtees satirises) the failings of those he encounters -Waffles (spendthrift), Jawleyford (humbug), Puffington (parvenu),Jogglebury (foolish), Scattercash (debauched)... Only coarse LordScamperdale consistently detests him. People invite him to stay butstruggle to evict him. His selfishness diminishes only on meeting &falling for lovely Lucy Glitters while hunting . Lacks sympatheticcharacters, silly names and voices abound and overlong given its lightnessand looseness. Terrific foxhunting detail & a delightlful, surprisingending.

3-0 out of 5 stars Poor presentation
Disappointed to find the print too small & pale on the pages, as if they skimped on ink! Hard to read. Got it as a gift for my elderly mother, but won't give it to her; can barely read it myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fox-hunting highjinks
Robert Smith Surtees devoted his life basically to two things: fox hunting and novel writing, actually combining both into a single pursuit. He wrote a number of delightful novels centering around the fox-hunting society in and about Durham, England; this was his last book, published posthumously, and among his best. Facey Romford is a confidence trickster who passes himself off as his wealthy namesake, using the other's stationery to pull off the switch. He becomes Master of the Hounds of the Heavyside Hunt, and from that vantage point we are privy to all kinds of characters and happenings. The novel ends with Facey and his new bride going to Australia, not in disgrace, as was hoped by all who knew him, but where his fortunes only increase and all is well. Surtees's humor is broad and ruthless, and his observations on what makes this society tick are keen and perceptive. The novel presents an entertaining look at the sporting side of Victorian England. ... Read more
