Fun characters make for a nice leisurely read.
I have become a John Leslie fan via his Key West PI Gideon Lowry series. I stumbled upon "Bounty Hunter Blues" in a used book store and glad I picked it up. Written in 1990 it is now out of print, but a mostworthwhile read. A nifty collection of characters, some of whom are mostRunyonesque. A twisty plot where the bad guys get their due. The good guysget their rewards, some rather unique. The plot is resolved in a believableway.

Really glad I found this one. John Leslie's Gideon Lowry series isstill in print and it is an enjoyable read. ... Read more

quantitative measures of projects
The book is a trifle unusual. It suggests how some social goals might be met, or progress made towards these, by innovative accounting methods. Suppose there are several policies, that each might satisfy some desirable social goal. But for reasons of cost, we can only implement one or a few of these. Where we might be some government or charity.

Then the book offers ways to measure a rate of return in monetary units. This gives a [hopefully] objective means of ranking the policies. Granted, sometimes this can be done for a policy only in retrospect, after that policy has been implemented for some time. But even here, the method is useful. For it gives a quantitative measure to suggest whether the policy should be continued in future. Especially if alternatives have also been measured. ... Read more
