May prove interesting to Berlioz scholars only.
Mr. MacDonald is well know for his involvment in Berlioz academia, however, I find him very opinonated in how the works are presented, i.e. the Te Deum and his addition to Les Troyens, an extention which I found added little to the opera. It is highly unlikely that he can take liberties with the letters, but what he chooses to include and exclude is relavent.Based on my observation of Mr. MacDonald, these choices may be questionable.Also, my observation of Berlioz acadmeia, Mr. MacDonald is the man in charge, but not the most talented of the group. The book, if it has new material, would be of intrest to Berlioz scholars.As a general selection, I would advise looking at content. ... Read more

This booklet is based on letters from two tiny islands in the Western Isles (Outer Hebrides) of Scotland, namely Boreray and Killegray. Primary material from these islands is basically impossible to find. These letters provide a snapshot of how the wealthy lived at that time; a marked change to the normal croft / peasant / working class focus of island histories. The letters were to a lawyer with strong family connections in Skye and Vallay; he was part of the Macdonald 'chief' line. He was also a major Edinburgh lawyer and a good friend to Sir Walter Scott. This book adds detail to the life of John Maclean of Boreray, the inhabitants of Vallay and the Campbells of Killegray and Strond. It provides, as well, a useful insight into the economy of the time throughout the Western Isles, and of the people's mood on Uist. The book also adds to the postal history of these islands and of Skye. It is a unique glimpse into two islands that time has now forgotten. ... Read more
