5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to malaria and a classic work in the early development of it's treatment
This work nicely covers key clinical and scientific information drafted in the late 1800s, before the cause of malaria was understood by science. It offers an excellent and intellectual overview of the illness, what was believed to be the cause, and clinical case histories for various forms of malarial diseases.

It is an excellent overview for the early student of epidemology and for anywone who wants to understand some of the core challenges relating to malaria. ... Read more

23. Inside Al Qaeda: How I Infiltrated the World's Deadliest Terrorist Organization

Product Description
In February 1996, Mohamed Sifaoui, an Algerian-born journalist, survived a bomb attack that killed several friends and colleagues-and thirty passers-by. "That day I realized something fundamental: I absolutely had to fight the fascist ideology of the Islamists and those who supported it, so that I would never again have to leave somewhere hoping that a bomb wouldn't go off." While covering a trial in 2002 Sifaoui came into contact with members of an active Al Qaeda cell in Paris. Sifaoui invented an identity and was able to win their trust and convince the terrorists that he shared their aims. Posing as Djamel Mostaghanemi, a pro-fundamentalist journalist, Sifaoui recorded and filmed his new associates speaking with alarming frankness about how they attract new recruits to the jihad, raise funds, spread propaganda, and, most chilling, identify targets for attack. Facing the possibility of exposure all the time, Sifaoui was at great personal risk, never more so than when he penetrated deep into the organization's hierarchy and was invited to meetings in London, Al Qaeda's European nerve center. A shocking diary, Inside Al Qaeda is also a testimony to one man's display of courage in the pursuit of truth. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Playing with Paranoia
Mohamed Sifaoui's book claims to be an account of how the author infilterated the world's dealiest terrorist organization but ends up providing exaggerated description of rambling youth in search of identity in a foreign country. The writer makes use of his being a Muslim to sell a book that really is nothing more than a diary about his meetings with characters who are too simple and trusting to be terrorists.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book on Algerian extremists in France
Interesting book, mostly on Algerian Islamicist extremism overseas and its links with extremists from other national groups. Sifaoui is an anti-Islamicist journalist from North Africa. The book is less about al-Qa'ida per se than about the Algerian Islamicist networks, but given the informality of 'al-Qa'ida', it is the more meaningful for it.

A book that goes well with this book is Abd Samad Moussaoui's "Zacarias Moussaoui, mon frère" (translated as "Zacarias Moussaoui: the twentieth man?" in the USA and as "Zacarias Moussaoui: The making of a terrorist" in the UK). Moussaoui, the brother of a French-Moroccan arrested immediately after 9/11, tries to explain why he thinks his brother became a terrorist. Thought-provoking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, intimate look at "ordinary" terrorists
Sifaoui's diary gives the reader a detailed look at the individuals who are drawn into Al Qaeda terrorism. I have read many books on this subject, and this is the first one that truly revealed the terrorist character - something that must be understood in order to combat this growing threat. ... Product Description
Black No More, George S. Schuyler's satiric romp, is the story of Max Disher, a dapper black rogue of an insurance man who, through a scientific transformation process, becomes Matthew Fisher, a white man. Matt dreams up a scam that allows him to become the leader of the Knights of Nordica, a white supremacist group, as well as to marry the white woman who rejected him when he was black. Black No More is a hysterical exploration of race and all its self-serving definitions.

Ishmael Reed, one of today's top black satirists and the author of Mumbo Jumbo and Japanese by Spring, provides a spirited introduction. ... Read more

I received the book quickly and it was really nicely packaged. When I opened it I expected it to be used, but nearly all of the pages were written on or highlighted. Although I have bought books that were in "good condition" before and none of them had this many markings in them.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books of all time
The satirical humor in this Harlem-Renaissance novel has me rolling on the floor laughing. Why don't we teach this novel in the classroom? It takes the color issue & turns it on its head.Completely irreverent in its acknowledgment of great African American leaders. One of my favorite books of all time.

Product Description
Nineteen distinguished contributors provide essays about the development of cognitive science by colleagues of George A. Miller, a central figure whose own intellectual history is to a large extent a history of the field. Each contributor was invited to write about the period in which each was most closely associated with Miller--to try to recapture the intellectual climate of the time and to place, retrospectively, each successive research venture in its larger context. Together the essays constitute a fascinating and readable personal account of the way in which an exciting new science has come into being. The Making of Cognitive Science will be welcomed by a broad audience in the cognitive science community, as well as by historians of psychology. ... Read more

Product Description
This volume is a direct result of a conference held at Princeton University to honor George A. Miller, an extraordinary psychologist. A distinguished panel of speakers from various disciplines -- psychology, philosophy, neuroscience and artificial intelligence -- were challenged to respond to Dr. Miller's query:

"What has happened to cognition? In other words, what has the past 30 years contributed to our understanding of the mind? Do we really know anything that wasn't already clear to William James?"

Each participant tried to stand back a little from his or her most recent work, but to address the general question from his or her particular standpoint. The chapters in the present volume derive from that occasion.

A century before the events of New York Times bestselling author George R. R. Martin's epic series, A Song of Ice and Fire, a squire named Dunk picks up the sword and shield of his dead master and enters a tournament to begin his career as a knight. But 'Ser Duncan' has much to learn about this world of knights and nobles, and as he attempts to find a sponsor who will allow him to enter the tournament, he makes friends and enemies readily. Dunk is a capable fighter and has a strong sense of honor, but is that enough for him to become a true knight in the eyes of the others, or is he just a young man living a delusion and putting those he knows in grave danger? ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read
I enjoyed reading this book, but I think it could have sat on the shelf in GRRM's office until he finished DWD. I'll buy the 2nd one eventually.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a *Graphic* Novel
I ordered both of the Hedge Knight graphic novels thinking they were actual novels, so I was quite surprised when I opened up my Amazon package to find comics/graphic novels instead. It may have been mentioned somewhere, but I didn't see any description to that effect, so I didn't realize it.

Luckily, my husband (who I bought them for) is a fan of graphic novels in addition to being a fan of the author. So, it turned out to be OK.

I just wanted to say for anyone not already aware, these are GRAPHIC novels. :)

Husband enjoyed them, and is looking forward to the third installment (if it ever gets published...) :P

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of trees
While being enthousiastic about the first installements of teh song of ice and fire saga , this book is just an attempt to milk the cow while it's still there .
GRMM has not been able/willing to advance SOIF since 2000 and it has been 10 years now with no end in sight .
What he did instead was to pull out of his drawers sub par pieces that would have never been accepted for publication by somebody whose name is not GRMM .
I have read (a kind word , more accurate would be overflown) this book in a library and suggest that if you come on the strange idea to read this thing to do likewise .
It is full of cliches , no originality and little consistence .
It is already a waste of trees so avoid to waste money on top .

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Wonderful!
I picked this up issue by issue at the comics store, and it is so good that I purchased both it and it's sequel, Hedge Knight 2, in hardcover.
It has the great elements of an adult comic:solid charaterization, beautiful artwork and fine story telling. This is not a cliched knight/swords tale.
When I looked up the author, George R. R. Martin, I found that these stories are based on two short stories which are themselves stories from Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series.I am finished with the first 3 books of that series now, and they are just about the best fantasy around.Again, I could say, "solid charaterization and fine story telling. These are not cliched knight/swords novels."

If you like the graphic, I believe you'll like the novels. And vice versa.

1-0 out of 5 stars I'm SO angry!

Product Description

The most comprehensive book ever published on achieving golf's major scoring milestone.

Legendary pro and NBC-TV commentator Johnny Miller shares his wisdom and shot-making skills to help players of all ages and abilities break through to the next level of performance. Clear text and easy-to-follow illustrations make Johnny's practical instruction easy to grasp and to use.

The book examines the mental game, course management, and lessons from experienced pros; it covers everything from stance and swing to pressure and momentum. Also featured are tales from the golf wars by such favorite writers as George Plimpton, David Owen, Charles McGrath, Frank Hannigan, and others. Breaking 90 with Johnny Miller is a totally up-to-date approach to golf instruction -- the essential primer for today's golfer.Amazon.com Review
Johnny Miller's hybrid instructional Breaking 90 is like a mismatched set of clubs that actually works when put together. Geared for the golfer who's hooked enough on the game to keep playing and trying to improve, it's a handsomely packaged and illustrated volume that mixes Miller's keen ability to teach with some lovely, funny, and insightful essays and observations on the game by writers such as John Seabrook, David Owen, Ann Hodgman, George Plimpton, Charles McGrath, Ian Frazier, and, most memorable of the group for golf literati, Samuel Shem's affectionate chronicle of a round with his golfing partner of two decades, John Updike.

But Miller's name tops the marquee, and with good reason. He's a first-rate communicator and a superb analyst of the golf swing, and the first third of the book is Miller exhibiting both skills. He begins with some basics--grip, stance, swing, and equipment--followed by an explanation of why the golf ball flies the way it does and what you can learn about your own swing from that. From there, it's out to the course to help you think your way through a round. Miller emphasizes that good decision-making over the ball is the cornerstone to posting good numbers and avoiding the costly mental errors that inflate your score. Then it's off to the range to work on flaws and mechanics with Miller-designed tips and drills. There's lots of good golf advice in Breaking 90, but even if Miller can't turn you into a bogey or better golfer, the bylines he totes along should at least bring your golf reading up to par. --Jeff Silverman ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Nice book but not a perfect one
To Breaking 90, someone may expect some swing drills especially from Johnny Miller but sorry, it doesn't.

The books itself is target to the one those already know how to hit the ball well. It will give you the suggestion, information and knowledge on how to play "Good golf" but not how to do "Good Swing"

The first section, "Johnny Miller's Better Golf" is the most valuable section for me. Its give you a "better" idea on how to play and how to practice. Other sections later in the book, are just "experience sharing" section which is nice to read but may be not good enough to remember.

Overall, if you are a good golfer and would like to get someting from the expert to make you even better. This book is the good one. But if you still fighting with your swing flaw, try another one. ... Read more
