Product Description
"Spreading the Risks" tells the story of how the American insurance industry evolved from colonial times through periods of war and economic transformation into the twenty-first century where it now faces open-ended liabilities from terrorism, asbestosis and environmental pollution. John A. Bogardus Jr., former chairman and CEO of Alexander & Alexander, uses his decades of business experience to explore the role of major twentieth-century American brokers. He provides an informed overview of American commercial insurance and offers memorable stories about the world's leading brokerages whose triumphs and failures reflect an ever-changing business. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A readable history of the insurance industry in America from the broker's perspective
This book was a quick read for an otherwise potentially dry history of insurance in America. I provides a nice perspective of an industry that is otherwise somewhat of a mystery to outsiders. It is very interesting for anyone in the broker industry as the book tracks the development of one of the major American brokerages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting with Broad Appeal
Having worked in insurance for years, I expected this book would be of interest to people like me. I was surprised, however, to find it has a much broader appeal. It was fascinating to read how commercial insurance developed in conjunction with and support of our country's development. Many will be surprised to learn of its significant role in protecting our society and promoting our economy.

The personal stories about the people who developed the business are especially enjoyable--some of the most interesting are
about founders of major brokerages and those associated with
problems at Lloyds of London in the eighties.

I recommend this book to insurance and business professionals and to general readers with interest in American history.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-read Book
Spreading the Risks: Insuring the American Experience is a fascinating account of the key events shaping the development of property and casualty insurance as an indigenous American business -- from colonial times to the present day.It is based on 13 years of research by an industry insider who had unique access to insurance leaders and records. It also is the most complete account I've found of how the insurance agency and brokerage system evolved through disasters and economic transformations into the 21st century.

It has an extensive bibliography and a comprehensive index that make it especially useful as a source of information.

5-0 out of 5 stars A remarkable book
Spreading the Risks does an outstanding job of telling the amazing story of the insurance industry.Who knew that insurance could be so interesting?

John Bogardus and Robert Moore have clearly spent considerable time researching this material and their "real life" experience in the field shines through beautifully. This book is incredibly valuable to people in the insurance field. However, it is written in a way that also appeals to the person who is simply curious about business, history, and life in general.

The book does a great job of demonstrating how the insurance business (in the past, and now ) affects all of us. ... Read more

All good stories begin with fascinating characters, and this novel is replete with them. We have Gwen, nineteen, five feet two inches, voluptuous and gorgeous. Gwen is a budding journalist who will do anything to get a story - and the story she gets leads her far deeper into an awareness of herself and sexual experience than she ever planned to go. We have Dan, big and brawny, a young cop, who discovers in himself a love of Gwen so overpowering that it leads him to heights of heroism and to depths of human understanding. We have the shadowy Mr. Mason, a Las Vegas racketeer, whose shadow grows blacker and more vile with each succeeding revelation of his character. And then we have Cliff, a giant of a man who proves to have a gentle heart; Claudia, a whorehouse madame and a sadistic lesbian; and Bob, Gwen's understanding and intelligent journalistic employer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars NTC'sDictionary of Latin & Greek Origins
This is a terrific book for deepening word knowledge. Thanks for the great service. My students will benefit greatly from this addition to our classroom resources.

2-0 out of 5 stars Inadequate and inaccurate
Do not waste your money on this book. Though it purports to be 'a comprehensive guide to the classical origins of English words', one might better subtitle it 'a scanty collection of classical roots and a few English derivatives of each of them, with ludicrous amounts of space wasted on limp example sentences and excessively verbose explanatory notes for page-padding.' This book's intended audience seems to be the semi-illiterate; and judging by the typographical errors and even etymological errors sprinkled liberally throughout, its authors were as well. Spare your intelligence the insult and buy a good dictionary instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFULL
This book is the best book I ever bought. There are all the words in the world and their Latin root. It says clear definitions and has many other features. I think you should buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tool for vocabulary
This book, more than any other I have used in my educational career, helps you understand the roots of the English language. English is widely known to be one of the most difficult languages to master because of the lack of common rules. This helps one to understand the roots of words and gives the reader/user links between words that normally would not be obvious. I use this excellent teaching and learning tool often, and my students benifit from it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jay missed the point!
I have found this book to be very helpful studying Latin and Greek roots. This is not a Latin textbook, as Jay Chang was probably looking for (he seemed to be looking for e-mail friends more than anything), and if he thought so from the title then he needs to study more English. My students (Graduate level English majors) love this book, we all find it very helpful because of the way it specifically traces rootsin each words breakdown allowing the reader to understand many more words that are related. If you are looking to expand your English vocabulary and your understanding of the roots of our language, this is the best book I have found. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books!!
I found this book in my school library in my freshman year of high school.I checked it out and got partway through, then had to return it.I was hooked, though, and finally found a used copy here on Amazon, which seems to be the only place you can get it now, since it's out of print. That said,it's worth tracking it down and paying S&H and a private seller to get your hands on this book.If you're serious about sci-fi,or have even a moderate interest in AI,this is a requisite. It's a compilation of sci-fi short stories about Artificial Intelligence that ranges in date from the earliest robot story to debate the ethics of the field--"Moxon's Master",written in 1894 by Ambrose Bierce--to classics of and groundbreakers in the genre--with a heavy dose of Asimov,"The Founder of Robotics"--to more modern stories written in the 1970s and 1980s.That's one catch:the book is an old one,so the most recent stories are from right before it was published. However, the book is organized into thematic sections, which is helpful for a disscussion-based reading of the stories. It contains some of the stories you kind of have to read to be considered to know AI sci-fi--several of Asimov's more important ones, two by Philip K Dick, one by Arthur C Clarke and another by Poul Andersen, but a bunch of others as well. The one problem I have with the book is that Asimov is an editor of it,and while he's undoubtedly contributed a plethora of work to the sci-fi genre and a good deal of it is important,I feel he's tooting his own horn too much by giving himself four spaces in this anthology.Otherwise, the pieces in here, while maybe not all well-written overall(a lot of it is pulp sci-fi),contribute important ideas to thinking about AI. ... Product Description
This book shows how you can publish LaTeX documents on the Web. LaTeX was born of the scientist's need to prepare well-formatted information, particularly with pictures and mathematics included; the Web was born of the scientist's need to communicate information electronically. Until now, it has been difficult to find solutions that address both needs. HTML and today's Web browsers deal inadequately with the nontextual components of scientific documents. This book, at last, describes tools and techniques for transforming LaTeX sources into Web formats for electronic publication, and for transforming Web sources into LaTeX documents for optimal printing. You will learn how to:*Make full use of Acrobat with LaTeX *Convert existing documents to HTML or XML *Use mathematics in Web applications *Use LaTeX to prepare Web pages *Read and write simple XML/SGML *Produce high-quality printed pages from Web-hosted XML or HTML pagesYou will find practical descriptions of:*LaTeX2HTML, which uses Perl to interpret LaTeX source and generate HTML *TeX4ht, which redefines LaTeX's macros to generate HTML or XML *Browser plugins, such as techexplorer, that are able to interpret mathematical markup directly *Tools for authoring and interpreting XML *Tools for translating XML into various output formats, using Cascading Style Sheets, DSSSL, or XSL *Mathematical Markup Language (MathML)In addition to giving the Internet location of the software described in this book, the authors also provide a full, annotated catalogue of URLs for the standards and documentation relating to this fast-moving area. 1-0 out of 5 stars wasted paper.
I'd put this on my amazon wishlist since I saw it listed used for ~$2.Unfortunately, somebody spent the money to buy it for me new.As mentioned by another reviewer, this book is dated, and much of it stale and not worth reading. This is especially true if your interest is mathematics presentation content.

You'll find gross detail on:
- latex2html, a processor system that produces output that looks awful
- mathml from latex, a system that has little good browser support, and only primitive mathematics tooling.
- a big chapter on xml, something that has little interest to somebody producing document content.
- ...

Parts of the pdf chapter I found worthwhile, but a printed copy of that text doesn't justify the dead trees.Perhaps I'll hack that bit out of the book with a knife and recycle the rest.

1-0 out of 5 stars out of date, not very useful
This book dates back to 1999, and since I'm writing this in 2006, that's seven years ago. Seven years is a long time for computer documentation. Virtually everything in the book is so far out of date that it's useless. The authors also didn't do a very good job of staying on topic; there are many long digressions that are neither interesting nor useful. In many cases, the authors merely give a broad-strokes outline of how to accomplish a particular task, or talk about several different approaches that have been taken by different people, without concluding with anything very helpful about how to actually accomplish the task.

5-0 out of 5 stars very handy
I am an user of latex on linux for sometime now. The possibillities are uncountable with this excellent software. This book touches on the use of tex and latex for the web. Being not that experienced with all the possibillities this book is very usefull. It is a good introduction for converting latex and tex files to documents for the web. If you can grasp all the stuff in this book you will be able to easily prepare all kinds of documents for the web and in the end save a lot of time lost with programming html yourself.
Don't expect to much examples and user details, it has an excellent index and reference list to get you started.
There is a lot of math stuff in this book, so trying to get a lot of formula's on the web this will certainly be of help. I am not into math so a couple pages could be skipped.
Concluding: want to get started with latex and the web, want to make good documents for the web on a fast and good way, this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Almost definitely recommended
I have found this book almost as useful and interesting as the LaTeX Companion. I think that it gives enough information about sharing TeX and LaTeX texts on the web, but the chapters covering pdfTeX and SGML/XMLapplications could be more detailed.
I have found that there is anotherbig problem - with every day coming the information tends to get older andolder. I can fully recommend buying this book today, but I am not sure if Iwould do it once more after half a year has passed.

If you wereinterested in transforming TeX into PDF, I would recommend also the LaTeXGraphics Companion, or some other book introducing the problematic ofPostScript and PDF. ... Read more

Robert Moore & Doug Gillette published a number of books on their theory of 4 male archetypes. The first is an overview entitled: "King, Warrior, Magician, Lover."They followed up this fine introductory work with a book on each of the 4 archetypes.Interestingly, the media reviews of these books got better and better as each volume was published.I think this reflects more on the editorial reviewers than on the quality of the books! This last book of the series is, of course, on the Lover Archetype. Each of the 4 books has a completely redundant section (worth reading once, anyway), but also has much material on the particular, titled, archetype. The names of the archetypes are defined a bit differently than society might define them (e.g. the lover differs considerably from the Don Juan or Casanova image)--moving the descriptions into the worlds of psychology and mythology in which the two authors are well-versed.If you read one, it's best to read them all.Otherwise, you get a skewed view of the archetypes, the authors' works, and the theory they propose. Thus, I disagree with the Beetles, love isn't all you need!I like this book very much.It provides not only description of the archetype but some ramifications and ideas as to how to implement or invoke it.They also point out that the present situation of mens' psychologal development (somewhat lacking) is due to the loss of ancient men's initiation rights, methods, etc. Thus, they insert some sociological/anthropological considerations into the fray.I found this book uplifting and see the glass as half full; while we have made great strides in certain respects (as a civilization), we have also paid a price in losses along the way.The authors provided the rationale and some means of implementation of the Mens' Movement. Not only are these books valuable to men, but they are, perhaps, even more valuable to women who wish to interact and support men. They are a wonderful addition to the literature and to humans understanding themselves and each other.By the way, Dr. Moore is associated with the C. G. Jung Institute of Chicago and many of his audio tapes are available for purchase (or rental to members). They're great! He is a fine speaker--I heard him in person when he came to Maryland some years back. ...
