' Algo- rithmus Integrorum Cum Probis annexis.' Quarto in threes.I think this is the oldest book in my list. The type is of that manuscript appearance which is ao common in books printed before 1480 : and this one can hardly be later than 1475, and may be ten years earlier. The matter is that of a writer prior to the school of Borgi and Pacioli. Though the nine digits are given, they are not used. The rules only are given, and they are Sacrobosco's set; for which see p. 15.No place nor date. ' Algorismus novus de integris com- pendiose sine figurarum (more Italorum) deletione compilatus. artem numerandi omnemque viam calculandi enucleatim bre- vissime edocens. una cum algorismis de minuciis vulgaribus videlicet et phisicalibus. Addita regula proportionum tam de integris quam fractis que vulgo mercatorum regula dicitur. Quibus habitis quivis modica adhibita diligentia omnem calculandi Hum In in facillime adipisci potest.' Quarto in fours.Three different editions of this work are mentioned by bibliographers, all without dates. Numeration is called prima species; addition, secunda species; and so on. There are slight examples, except upon the square root, in which only results are given. It is something between such a work as the last, with rules only, and that of Borgi, to which I now come, in which there is decided force of examples.Venice, fourteen-eighty-eight. Piero Borgi. Work on Arithmetic without title, as follows. Quarto in fours. This is one of the editions alluded to in page 2, and for the power of mentioning it from inspection (as well as the works of Ghaligai and Texeda following) I am indebted to Dr. Peacock. It begins with the following verses :Chi de arte matematiche ha piacere Che t... ... Read more

It was at this time that he became acquainted with my 1827. father, William Frend. They first met at the office of the Nautical Almanac, of which their common friend, Lieutenant Stratford, R. N., had been recently appointed Comptroller. Mr. Frend and Mr. Stratford were both members of the old Mathematical, and subsequently of the Astronomical Society. Though my father was, even at that time, far behind Mr. De Morgan as a mathe- matician, the two had a good deal of mathematics in common. My father had been second wrangler in a year in which the two highest were close together, and was, as his son-in-law afterwards described him, an exceedingly clear thinker and writer. It is possible, as Mr. De Morgan said, that this mental clearness and directness may have caused his mathematical heresy, the rejection of the use of negative quantities in algebraical operations; and it is probable that he thus deprived himself of an instrument of work, the use of which might have led him to greater eminence in the higher branches. This same heresy gave occasion to many amusing arguments and discussions. But between these two sympathy in matters of morals and principle formed a stronger bond than similarity of pursuit. My father had sacrificed good prospects as a clergyman to his conscientious scruples about the doctrines of the Established Church, as ex- pressed in the Creeds a... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bibiographical information
The first edition is London: Longmans, Green, 1872. The second is from Open Court, 1915 with a preface by David Eugene Smith. The edition listed here is a mutilated version of 1915 (I think) minus the two prefaces of that edition (by Sophia de Morgan and Smith). Save your money and buy the Dover reprint of 1954, which has a nice preface by Ernst Nagel.

3-0 out of 5 stars Review of "A Budget of Paradoxes"
I first ran across this book in a reference in one of Martin Gardiner's books, and ordered it knowing little about it.

Augustus de Morgan was an English mathematician who lived from 1806-1871.He uses the term "paradox" to mean a person who has views or theories contrary to the established system, in a variety of fields, including mathematics, the sciences in general, religion, politics, etc.

This book is a single paperback book containing both Volumes 1 and 2.This was originally published as two volumes in 1915.However, the material all dates from the 1860's and earlier, and Volume 1 was apparently published in that time.

This book is about people as revealed in their books and letters. In most or all cases, these were books or pamphlets or letters which were in de Morgan's collection. They are taken in chronological order, meaning the subject will jump from geometry to atomic theory to religion and back again. Some are described in a few sentences or paragraphs, some in a page or two, and some run on for multiple pages.

One of the more common themes is the squaring of the circle or the related question of the calculation of pi.It might be assumed that de Morgan would go into detail about the methods used, the errors introduced, refutation of the false ideas, etc.But this is a book mainly about people, and so you'll find a discussion of this or that person, and generally what their ideas were, but in most cases, not a detailed analysis of their work or their errors.

A general understanding of mathematical and scientific principles is helpful when reading the work, although, as noted, it is not a book of math theorems.Fortunately, most of the French and Latin quotations have been translated by the editors.

The value of the work seems to me to be threefold.First, it reviews a great number of works and people, many of which were obscure in their own day, and many of which would be impossible to find today.Secondly, it serves as a window into the 19th century (and earlier) world of math and science, the ways of thinking, and the relationships between different groups.Thirdly, de Morgan does have occasional real gems of humor or wording in his work, and what might be otherwise very dry writing is made considerably more interesting by his sense of humor. ...
