Product Description
This book traces the earliest history of architecture at its birthplace in the ancient Middle East (primarily the current Iran and Iraq) and ancient Egypt, and covers archeological sites, temples, tombs, and early dwellings - several of which have been the subject of recent news coverage on sites and treasures threatened by the Iraq war and political instability. The History of World Architecture is one of Electa's most popular architecture series, with each book in the series providing a comprehensive overview of its subject by a world-renowned expert in the field, accompanied by 200-300 black-and-white photographs, plans, and drawings and 24 colour plates. First published in the 1970s and 1980s, the Italian editions of these books remain standard reference works in architecture history and continue to sell well due to the authority of their authors, their judicious combination of text and illustrations, and careful use of accurate yet accessible terms. The English editions, after being out of print for several years, are now available again exclusively through Phaidon. The books are ideal for college-level students of architecture history, and for anyone who seeks one basic and i ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A pictorial "Ferrari" of history of architecture books
A part of the series History of World Architecture originally published by Electa in Italian in 1971-7 under a general editorship of Pier Luigi Nervi, it was translated to English and published by Abrams in 1971-80 in b&w only, but at 10 x 11 1/4 inches. Subsequently, the series was reedited, shrunk to 8 5/7 x 9 1/2 inches, and published by Electa / Rizzoli in 1985-9 with a few color photos added including each front cover. In the early 2000's, the series was reissued by Phaidon unchanged except for the front cover photo. It is a pictorial "Ferrari" of history of architecture books. Almost every page contains one or - usually - more than one illustration as photo, plan, section, elevation, axonometric view, etc. of the highest quality. They depict the best examples of topical architecture covering the most significant ones. The text was written by one of the best experts in the field. While relatively concise, it is still comprehensive and complete enough even for students of architecture.
The Abrams' edition combines Ancient and Greek Architectures and contains 525 black & white illustrations, including 179 diagrams and reconstructions.

PUBLISHER'S SYNOPSIS:

*ANCIENT ARCHITECTURE*:
(24 color and 249 black & white illustrations in non-Abrams' editions.)
Seton Lloyd and Hans Wolfgang Müller describe the beginnings of architecture in the Ancient Near Middle East and Egypt, the brithplace of Western civilisation, where the newly born science of construction merged with an emerging aesthetic practice. This book examines sites and structures from neolithic temples in Anatolia to the royal tombs of Egypt. Each page combines reconstruction drawings of site plans, building perspectives, and decorative elements with photographs of archeological sites including aerial views and details. An extensive section is devoted to Egyptian architecture from its origins to the first century AC. Also included are the first dwellings on a circular plan, dating from the 8th millenium BC in Jordan, the famous site of Catal Hayuk, the ziggurat towers of the Neo-Assyrians and Neo -Babylonians, and the Achaemenids. The book examines the theological requirements, organization, and hierarchies in the architectural practices of the era.

*GREEK ARCHITECTURE*:
(24 color and 276 black and white illustrations in non-Abrams' editions.)
This volume presents an extraordinary collection of images and covers the whole range of Greek architecture, from a thorough analysis of Minoan Crete - which marked the beginning of the history of Western architecture - through Mycenae, to the magnificence of the Doric places of worship: from the temples of Corinth, Delphi and the Acropolis to those of Magna Graecia. The book covers the birth and evolution of the doric and ionic orders, religious architecture, and the temples and structures of Classical Greece. There is a substantial section on civic architecture, which closely reflects the formation and evolution of the political community, the most original aspect of ancient Greece. Important centres outside Greece are discussed, including Agrigento and Segesta in Sicily. The final section documents the Hellenic phase, with its unparalleled innovations and its influence on the greater Mediterranean. ... Read more

Product Description
Counter to the popular impression that Adam Smith was a champion of selfishness and greed, Jerry Muller shows that the Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations maintained that markets served to promote the well-being of the populace and that government must intervene to counteract the negative effects of the pursuit of self-interest. Smith's analysis went beyond economics to embrace a larger "civilizing project" designed to create a more decent society. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Puts Smith in Context
Muller puts Smith in historical context and integrates his major works (Wealth of Nations, Theory of Moral Sentiments, and Lectures on Jurisprudence, the latter surviving only in the form of student notes) to paint a complete picture of Smith as moral philosopher. Smith's philosophy is often mischaracterized as one in which "greed is good" and the market alone is sufficient to attain a civil and productive society. Muller goes far beyond this cartoonish version of Smith to place his appreciation for the market in its proper context and distinguish Smith from contemporaries such as Mandeville and Bentham.

Muller's analysis is well-developed, but his exposition is at times repetitive. The final chapter, in which he attempts to relate Smith's philosophy to contemporary society, is a bit of a throwaway; and Muller is on shakier ground discussing economics than ethics. On balance, though, this is a fascinating and useful book that any student of Adam Smith should own. Despite the book's age, even the twenty-page Guide to Further Reading remains valuable.

5-0 out of 5 stars There is more to Adam Smith Than I Thought
Before reading this book I believed that I was aware of the essence of what Adam Smith offered, but I was wrong, and I suspect many others would learn from this book that there is a complexity to Adam Smith's philosophy of which most have not been informed.

Smith has much to say about the role of government, and the negatives of market capitalism, opinions for which he is little known. He also presents a less than sanguine view of the motives and morals of the merchant class. Many of us who think we possess a clear understand of what Adam Smith advocated might find this book enlightening.

To gain such understanding we could simply read the Wealth of Nations in its entirety, but reading Adam Smith in the original can be difficult and tedious.Professor Muller does all the heavy lifting for us, adds his own very substantial erudition, and presents an entertaining and valuable survey of Smith's writings and wisdom along with interesting biographical information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant primer on the thought of Adam Smith
I couldn't disagree more with the review of Max Hayes. It would and does shock people to learn that Adam Smith wasn't primarily an economist as we think of the term. The fact that his work was centered around moral philosophy and making people "decent" is widely unknown and most people have never even heard of The Theory of Moral Sentiments. Robert Heilbroner said it best when he called Smith "the most quoted and least read of the worldly philophers."

This book is not a biography of Smith, which would probably be pretty boring. It is an examination of his ideas. Muller starts by placing the book in its intellectual context of earlier traditions. Than he turns to an examination of Smith's work as a whole. This is important because to often Smith is limited to The Wealth of Nations, which is only one element of his thought. Muller examines The Theory of Moral Sentiments and the Lectures on Jurisprudence to form a more complete picture of Smith as a moral philisopher.

The most important element of this book is the demonstration that Smith was not a defender of unrestrained greed. Smith sought to defend and construct institutions that would channel individual self-interest into benefical results for the whole of society. Nor was he an enemy of government. While it is true that he thought government often proved a danger to the market because of the influence of what we call special interests, Smith did not reject government regulation totally. In fact he argued for regulation of banking and interest rates and advocated using the government to try and correct the negative effects capitalism had on the intellect of the people through public financed education.

Muller writes a compelling book demonstrating that Smith is not the proto-libertarian so many people claim. That in fact Smith would probably be quite dismayed at the uses to which his thoughts have been applied.

1-0 out of 5 stars Another Book on Smith
This book is an uninspiring analysis of Smith's work.Nobody who has even a cursory knowledge of Smith's writings would be surprised by what Muller has to say.The basic point that Smith was not a philosopher of unbridled greed is unsurprising. It is not that the thesis of the book is wrong, but it is simply something that could have been said in an article or less.Obviously a lot of hard work went into the book, but it is the product of a mediocre mind.

Product Description
When the U.S. government forced 70,000 American citizens of Japanese ancestry into internment camps in 1942, it created administrative tribunals to pass judgment on who was loyal and who was disloyal. Muller relates the untold story of exactly how military and civilian bureaucrats judged these tens of thousands of American citizens during wartime. This is the only study of the Japanese American internment to examine the complex inner workings of the most draconian system of loyalty screening that the American government has ever deployed against its own citizens. At a time when our nation again finds itself beset by worries about an "enemy within" considered identifiable by race or religion, this volume offers crucial lessons from a recent and disastrous history. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Inaccuracy
There were many inaccuracies in this book regarding Dr. George Ochikubo.Much data was gathered from the national archives written by persons that did not care for Dr. Ochikubo due to the fact that he embarassed them in the courts. One of the discrepancy was that he did not speak the Japanese language. The fact is that he was fluent in the language because his grandparents only spoke Japanese. That was his only method to communicate with his parents.

1-0 out of 5 stars Inquisition or Preservation?
One is immediately forced to judge this book by its title. The author's choice of words betray his intentions -- to once again prove the United States government's failures (in this study, he calls it a "disaster"). The choice of "Inquisition" shows the author's bias, choosing to equate the government's actions with those of the Roman Catholic Church's Inquisition of examination and extermination. Other authors use similar tactics when they use such terms, e.g. "concentration camps," revealing an attitude of disgust and distrust of our Government.

Muller continues his theme in this recent work of his: Look how bad our Government was to the Nikkei. He closes his book with the warning: We'd better watch out because the Government might do it again, i.e. the "unfettered deployment of military power against American civilians on American territory."

Basically, Muller tries to point out that the US military and US Govt. were out to get the Nikkei, that the WDC and Provost Marshal's Office were guilty of thinking the Nikkei were guilty of disloyalty simply by association, that they had the idea that no Japanese could ever be loyal to the US, so they had to lock them up. I quote:

"...a very different view led to the mass exclusion of the Nisei from the West Coast. That view saw the Nisei as an unassimilable group of native-born foreigners, individuals whose 'racial traits' and family bonds prevented them from forming true loyalty to the United States... They were the /only/ group of American citizens who were presumed to be disloyal."

With these results:

"The consequences of the army's presumption of disloyalty were severe. The presumption led all of the Nisei in General DeWitt's exclusion zone -- more than 70,000 American citizens, of whom nearly 40,000 were over the age of eighteen -- into so-called assembly centers. Without charges, without proof, without hearings, and with only a few days' to a few weeks' notice, they were herded into makeshift barracks at racetracks and fairgrounds in and near the major West coast cities."

Notice again Muller's use of "all" -- this comes out a lot in similar works and articles, even to the extent that insinuates all the Nikkei were American citizens!

He brings out the fact that out of 38,449 Nisei who were interviewed, 12,404 were found to be of questionable loyalty. What Muller fails to mention is that nearly 90% of the Nikkei answered "Yes" to Question 28 of the Questionnaire of 1943. They were proof of trust and were not counted disloyal.

The other District Commands did not put the 15,000 Nikkei who were living outside of the West Coast military zones into camps. That was proof of trust, even though among them were enemy aliens.

There were 4,000 Nikkei who voluntarily evacuated and relocated outside of the military zones. They were trusted.

There were 1,000 Nikkei being released from the centers each week. That was proof of trust.

The real issue is this: Why did thousands want to remain in the relocation centers when they could have left. Muller does not address this. Nor does he discuss the groups of Issei and Kibei who were intimidating and threatening the majority of the evacuees with yakuza-like tactics -- that citizens should not volunteer or do anything to help the United States, that Japan was their real country, and that no Japanese should swear allegiance to the United States as required on the registration forms. This egregious display of disloyalty was ignored by Muller.

More than a matter of loyalty or trust, however, it was preservation, and the US Government did a marvelous job of it in not only protecting the Nikkei but sustaining them in a very generous way, even those who were very much anti-America and pro-Japan. No other ethnic group in the history of the US had had such treatment. In reality, the US Government did succeed in weeding out the disloyal, to the joy and relief of thousands of Nikkei.

Muller would do well to investigate those 20,000 Nikkei who never were in relocation centers, or the 6,000 Nisei who were in Japan, during WWII. They certainly had no questionnaire given them to fill out, yet they were obviously trusted, the latter amazingly by the Imperial Japanese Government as being "loyal" to their ancestral motherland. Their Caucasian fellow Americans did not receive such a welcome, but were thrown into real internment camps.

With his special affinity for dissenters and resisters, Muller has found a few sole court cases which took on the US Government for its unjust and tyrannical actions. To the author, these dissenters are also real heroes of democracy and loyalty. He portrays one Kiyoshi Okamoto as an "excellent example" of the War Relocation Authority's abuse. Okamoto was the chief organizer of the draft resistance movement at Heart Mountain Relocation Center, for which he had "stunning success." He and others were convicted for conspiracy to evade the draft and counsel others to do the same.

It is difficult to discover in books of this nature what the real message is. I perceive it to be this: That the Nikkei in the US before and during WWII had nothing in them that deserved to be distrusted, that they were all loyal, that they were all discriminated against and treated unfairly. In other words, it matters not there was a war between the two countries -- all the Issei were to be naturalized and left alone, with their Nisei families; "alien enemy" must never be used to describe the Issei during WWII.

In his "Conclusion," Muller's theories unravel -- the US Government may not necessarily have been unfair. He uses numerous words such as "probably," "perhaps," and "maybe," revealing his own inconclusiveness over all the research he has done. "Perhaps" there is hope, then, that this was not a "sorry chapter in the history of the government's treatment of its citizens" after all.

Anyone interested in this period of history then has hope Muller will expend his research skills in something more definitive, rather than "prejudice, misjudgment, and mistake." We welcome a true and balanced story from the keyboard of Muller -- a book on the Japanese Americans who never knew evacuation and relocation under the US government, or, something more closely related, a book on the people of German ancestry in the US during WWII who were "rounded up" and interned.

5-0 out of 5 stars American Inquisition:The hunt for Japanese American.......
This book is well researched and written in a manner that, although scholarly, is very readable and full of information of facts not previously known to me.In the light of the current state of afairs in our country, this book points out how we have previously acted under the stress of war.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Important and Timely Study
Contrary to the first review, I believe that Eric Muller's book is an important and timely study of the Japanese American internment, and while narrowly focused on the question of "loyalty," this question and how it was determined and the racial prejudices that were exhibited by the various military agencies and WRA point to the ways in which the line between those deemed "loyal" and "disloyal" were arbitrarily drawn, largely by the prejudices of those involved (DeWitt being foremost among those who has been documented as saying that the internment was revenge for Pearl Harbor--a troubled and flawed and revealing comment if ever there was one since it demonstrated that DeWitt, like to many others during WWII could not distinguish between Japanese nationals, Japanese miltitary, Japanese in America of the first generation unable to apply for citizenship due to racist immigration/citizenship laws, and Japanese Americans whose cultural influences included Mickey Mouse, the Boyscouts, and American jazz, as well as Akido, Sushi, and Buddhist practices).

The work that Muller has done will resonate with the questions we are currently facing as a society living in a post-9/11 world; Muslim and Arabs living in America are at risk in a similar way currently. We need to remember the lesson of internment and this question of "loyalty" as not being commensurate with race or religion.

1-0 out of 5 stars Only Part of the Story
This is a book which primarily concentrates on only one superficial aspect of the World War II program which evacuated persons of Japanese ancestry from West Coast military zones. That aspect was the loyalty screening of such persons for release from relocation camps. Unfortunately, the book, as it relates to the overall evacuation program itself, contains a number oferrors, omissions, and misrepresentations which negatively affect its historical credibility.

Specifically, the book incorrectly describes the legal status of the evacuated Japanese during WWII and completely ignores the intelligence reasons for their exclusion from West Coast military areas. The author refers to such persons as all being " American citizens of Japanese ancestry" and the book as "a study of the Japanese American internment as a system of legalized racial oppression."The problem here is that those about whom he writes were not all American citizens, they were not "interned" (as he himself admits in a footnote) nor was their evacuation based on race. The author confuses national origin with race.We were at war with Japan as a nation, not with the Japanese as a race.

As for citizenship, the book does not reveal that the majority of the ADULTS among those evacuated were Japanese nationals, enemy aliens subjcct to detention under long-standing law.Furthermore, the vast majority of the U.S. citizens among the evacuees were minor children at the time. Those of them over age 17 for the most part held dual citizenship status, being also citizens of Japan, thousands having been educated in Japan.Among such Japanese-educated dual citizens were reservists in the Japanese Army and more than 5,000 who renounced their U.S. citizenship to support the Japanese war effort.None of this is covered in this book. Nor is it mentioned that during the war more than 33,000 evacuees were cleared for loyalty and left the camps, some were citizens, some were Japanese nationals.

At several other places, figures in the book do not add up or disagree with their source as cited in the footnote. At one point in Chapter 9, the author cites a source which does not account for some 20,000 evacuees and misquotes the source (Robinson) at the same time.In several instances the author cites himself as a reliable source.

In summary, this book should be read primarily for its entertainment value rather than as faithful reproduction of the wartime historical record. ... Read more

Product Description
From provocative op-ed pieces and contemporary essays by some of today's most gifted masters to editorial cartoons and clever satire, the 105 selections in Many Americas engage students and invite them to think critically about the political and cultural fault lines that divide our country. Many Americas is the first composition text to address the complex, polarizing divisions among citizens on the most important issues of our time: economic status, family values, health, religion, the environment, national security, and international relations. Taken together, the diverse selections go beyond simplistic red-state/blue-state labels to explore the social landscape and its larger contexts and examine assumptions behind attitudes. The readings not only represent a wide spectrum of politically and culturally diverse voices, they also provide a variety of rhetorical models from across the curriculum. The pedagogical apparatus guides students to hone their own thinking, writing, and argumentative skills to more effectively respond to what they read and become active participants in today's cultural and political forum. As students work through these selections, writing and discussion questions prompt them to grapple with their own values, experiences, and beliefs, while learning to respect diverse points of view. ... The body of an woman washes up near Point Deception, California--a day after she was spotted near her broken-down car on the highway. Deputy Sheriff Rhoda Swift worries the woman's brutal rape and murder will resurrect fears from the unsolved massacre of two families 13 years before. When Rhoda investigates with journalist Guy Newberry, a shocking truth will test how far she is willing to go for justice. (May)Amazon.com Review
A new Marcia Muller book is always cause for celebration, and in this brooding, melancholy thriller she introduces a compelling new heroine. Rhoda "Rho" Swift is a deputy sheriff in California's fictional Soledad County. She isstill tormented by a 13-year-old multiple murder in Cascade Canyon, wheretwo counterculture families and their children were slain by an unknownkiller. And when the body of an unidentified woman washes up in the watersoff nearby Point Deception and two other local women go missing, Rhodafears that the anniversary of the Canyon murders has unleashed anotherkilling spree. She's not alone. The scared, suspicious townspeople arewondering the same thing. They're also unhappy that Guy Newberry, a NewYork writer whose bestselling books have exposed the secrets of other smalltowns, has turned up in Soledad trying to ferret out theirs. But Rho andGuy have something in common besides trying to learn why trouble has comeback to Point Deception: they're both running from their own demons, andeven the attraction that's starting to grow between them can't change thepast.

Muller's intricate plotting and strong narrative flow have won a dedicatedfan base for her SharonMcCone series, and both qualities are on full display here. She'sskilled at evoking the landscape and atmosphere of her native California, and even her minor characters (like Wayne Gilardi, Rho's fellow cop, andJack Swift, her father) are complex and interesting enough that theirsketched-in back stories are worth telling. 5-0 out of 5 stars The first Point Deception also an excellent read.
I discovered, or rather I should say that my publisher Eloquent Books discovered this book when they did a title search in the pre-publication phase of my novel Point Deception. Muller's Point Deception is a geographic locale; a crime scene. My title is derived from the Coast Guard scheme of naming their 82-foot patrol boats--all of these boats are named after named points of land, for instance Point Deception in my book is the psuedonym for the real patrol boat Point Welcome. I was intrigued by the first title Point Deception so I obtained a copy of Muller's book. I am very glad that I did. As a writer I immediately identified with the character Guy Newberry which brought me up close and personal in the action. I was raised in a small coastal town and the setting of the book really hit home. There is a simple formula for the writing of good fiction and that gold standard is: character plus conflict equals drama. Drama is the one indispensible ingredient for successful fiction. Muller's book meets and exceeds this standard. The characters are real, the action sets your heart pounding and your fingers to the task of turning pages to see what happens next. I'll read this book a second and third time, just because I know that I'll be in for a new surprise as I pick up things missed on the previous read. Having read this well written book I can unequivocally state that I have become an instant Marcia Muller fan and I will be reading more of her work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surpised - very good mystery
I just happened upon this book and bought it because it sounded interesting and I was looking for something different. I am happy I picked it up. It was a very good mystery that had interesting and believable characters, and a wonderful atmosphere. I liked the two main characters and their background stories. Everything came together very nicely and it was an enjoyable ending. I will definitely be reading another one of Muller's books. My only complaint was that the narratives were a little choppy at times, but it was only a minor flaw in the book and didn't significantly affect the overall feel of the book. I highly recommend it to all murder mystery lovers.

2-0 out of 5 stars Confusing Characters
The intrigue of what happened to "Crissy" is there but the back and forth of so many characters made it too confusing. Frustration made me drop the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gritty, tortured, awesome...
I've read three Marcia Muller mysteries recently. The first two were from her Sharon McCone series, and I found a later McCone much better than an earlier book. Was I astounded to discover that Point Deception (not part of the McCone series) is an awesome story!

Point Deception is seen through the eyes of two scarred individuals.Guy Newberry is a writer whose specialty is finding the secrets of towns in trouble. But he's pretty much given up his lucrative career when his photographer-wife was killed on a joint story three years previous.Rhoda "Rho" Swift is a sheriff's deputy in fictional Soledad County, California.Rho is still haunted by demons from her first crime scene--the grisly murder of eight people living commune-style in Cascada Canyon. The 13 year old crime was never solved, and the county closed ranks to outsiders. The brother of one of the victims convinces Newberry to investigate this unsolved case, and Newberry is intrigued enough to travel from NYC to California.

Newberry faces many obstacles in his investigation. Many townspeople continue to be spooked by the murders. Some refuse to cooperate with him.The sheriff's department made multiple errors that hindered the investigation, which calls suspicion to them as well. But there are several residents who have secrets to share that may shed light on this case. When Newberry arrives, it looks like another killing spree may have started on the eve of the anniversary of the Cascada Canyon murders. This opens up the old wounds and brings the nightmares back. But it also unleashes a chain of events that will ultimately help Newberry and Swift to solve the mystery together.

It is hard for me to believe that Point Deception is written by Marcia Muller--the same author who writes the Sharon McCone series. The writing is hard and gritty and the characters are more deep and tortured. It's a book I'd expect from Michael Connelly.Muller's husband is writer Bill Pronzini, so it's possible that some of his influence has rubbed off.If I were Muller, I'd start a series with Rhoda Swift.I think she's a much more interesting character.

1-0 out of 5 stars Point Deception is imaginary and the book is bad
This book is my 1st Marcia Muller - and last.

The plot is old '80's hippy drug CA north-coast retread stuff. The worst part is that the local law (sheriffs) are dumber than dirt and 8 people get killed (unsolved - no wonder) and 13 years later (to the exact date ... dum, dee, dum, dum - hard plot BS to swallow) - 4 more get killed - and leave hairs and tire tracks and Nike tracks all over and - our dumb lady Deputy is - you guessed it - DUMB.

Compared to a Robert B. Parker or an Elmore Leonard or a John D. MacDonald or a leCarre or even a Dick Francis or a Tony Hillerman, this author/book/plot/characters/dialog is zero.

Do yourself a favor - read them first - then read something else.

Kanwal

5-0 out of 5 stars Logical, organized, thorough, and clear
This is for the 1986 2nd edition, Device Electronics for Integrated Circuits, ISBN: 0471887587. I have not looked at the recent 3ed. The fundamentals in this "1980's vintage" 2ed. text haven't changed, and therefore it is still relevant.

In recommending this text, I assume you have already briefly encountered device physics in a class or in a bit of self-study, that you have an elementary grasp of solid state, semiconductor statistics, and electrostatics, and that you understand how to do elementary differentiation and integration. I also assume you like a logical, systematic approach.

Successfully using this book reminds me of practice in (American) football: you must mix dedication, sweat, blood, and pain with ample time and passion to be prepared for victory on game day. In that vein, I spent about 90 hours of study (that I could spare) over a few months and studied EVERY page of this book, starting with the first page of the preface and page-by-page working my way to the last page in the last chapter, Ch. 10 (there are no appendices). (That's about 10 min per page, in case you're wondering.) I've looked at Sze, Tuar & Ning, Pierret, Neudeck, Wolf, and others. This book is superior for the prepared beginner. My undergraduate class used the Modular Series by Pierret and Neudeck, which in retrospect always leaves me with the same feeling watching someone trying to lose weight without working out and dieting; somewhere you have to struggle with the concepts and math. There is no other way.

M&K's book is logically laid out and mathematically systematic, with each chapter building on the previous. That can be a disadvantage if you impatiently just want to plunge in on a MOSFET for example. But, if you start at the beginning and work your way painstakingly page-by-page to the end, you WILL understand device physics. This disciplined approach will pay off huge dividends. Do it. Buy it. Study it.

I make no naive claim that a single text will get you to mastery. When finished with this book, I suggest next reading Sze's encyclopedic-like 1981 text as a good review of all types of devices, then going to a modern text like the one from Taur & Ning to get the latest updates. If you've done the preparation, reading Taur and Ning will be very insightful and enjoyable, as the pace is pretty quick. Finally, as a warmup before tackling M&K, you might consider "Intuitive Ic Electronics: A Sophisticated Primer for Engineers and Technicians" by Thomas M. Fredericksen.

Good luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite undergrad device physics text
When I was in grad school I learned most of the basics from two books, Streetman and Muller and Kamins. I worked every problem in this book during that effort and I thought they were excellent. They had some challenge to them, introducedmany good points not in the text, and were very relevant toreal world practice. Despite the opinions of some other reviewers device physics hasnt really changed at the undergraduate level, hence this book is still a good choice. The book is restricted to silicon, which is still the dominant technology out there and really focuses on giving you a good basic background in devices used in today's IC chips. It is more focused in this sense thansome other books, it does not deal with optoelectronic devices or MESFETs, but what it covers it covers very well, and does so in a very practical manner, reflecting the fact that Dr Muller is tightly tied into the Integrated circuit industry and hiscoauthor is in industry. Dr Muller has a reputation as an excellent instructor.

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative, but a bit pricey
I originally bought this book for a university course several years ago, and have now found myself referring to it again in my new job (my parents shipped it from Australia for me). Found it useful for explanations onvarious semiconductor processes, but is perhaps a bit dated now (quite abit has changed since 1986!).A bit pricey.

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit cryptic, although a good reference.
Muller & Kamins have written a useful reference book, although as a textbook it leaves a bit to be desired.Few examples and circular references leave one always turning to the index. Not a good firstintroduction...but a very handy book to have around once you understand thematerial. ... Read more

Product Description

The legendary names include Rothschild, Mendelssohn, Bloch-Bauer—distinguished bankers, industrialists, diplomats, and art collectors. Their diverse taste ranged from manuscripts and musical instruments to paintings by Old Masters and the avant-garde. But their stigma as Jews in Nazi Germany and occupied Europe doomed them to exile or death in Hitler’s concentration camps. Here, after years of meticulous research, Melissa Müller (Anne Frank: The Biography) and Monika Tatzkow (Nazi Looted Art) present the tragic, compelling stories of 15 Jewish collectors, the dispersal of their extraordinary collections through forced sale and/or confiscation, and the ongoing efforts of their heirs to recover their inheritance. For every victory in the effort to return these works to their rightful heirs, there are daunting defeats and long court battles. This real-life legal thriller follows works by Rembrandt, Klimt, Pissarro, Kandinsky, and others.

“A heartbreaking and enthralling story of the brutal and mindless Nazi destruction of a singularly cultivated caste of rich German and Austrian Jews and the pillage of their great art collections: a world that was lost and could never be recreated.” ~ Louis Begley

Product Description
The McCone Files gathers all of Sharon McCone's short cases covering her entire career as staff investigator at All Souls Legal Cooperative in San Francisco.Marcia Muller comments in the introduction, "Over the seventeen years since her first case, very little about McCone except her voice has remained the same, and the stories in this collection trace her development."Each tale, including two written especially for this volume, is a miniature masterpiece of plotting, realistic characters and vivid settings.

From the death of a clown in Diablo Valley to the disappearance of a young socialite on the Golden Gate Bridge, from the murder of a teenage gang leader in San Francisco to the drowning of an aged Japanese herb-gatherer, and from streets filled with juvenile runaways to the quietness of a mausoleum, Sharon investigates not only who committed the crimes but also what they say about or world toward the end of the twentieth century.

The McCone Files is a distinguished book by a distinguished author. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good collection of mysteries
It is hard to say exactly when women PIs were first conceived by authors.Various writers had created women characters involved in crime solving, e.g., Agatha Christie's Miss Marple, Dashiell Hammett's Nora Charles, etc.At some point women characters begin to obtain licenses to operate as PIs.Cordelia Gray was created by P.D. James in "An Unsuitable Job for a Woman" (copyright 1973), but the series did not seem to continue beyond a second novel. The earliest Sharon McCone short story in the present collection shows a copyright in 1981, but the author indicates the character was created in 1971 (I know from personal experience that it can take a significant period of time to get a story published - my first Mark Mandering story was in an ezine in 2005).At about the same time Kinsey Millhone was created by Sue Grafton (the reprint edition of "A is for Alibi" shows a 1982 copyright, but I am not sure when the character was created ).Other women PIs have been created along the way, e.g., Tess Monaghan by Laura Lippman, Tamara Hayle by Valerie Wilson Wesley, etc.

The present collection has 15 short stories about PI Sharon McCone, although the last one is a continuation of the first. After working for a PI firm, Miss McCone strikes out on her own and becomes the house investigator for a legal cooperative in San Francisco, although sometimes taking on independent cases. The character develops from story to story.

Sharon McCone has her own unique characteristics, sometimes carrying a gun, but usually not.The stories involve missing people, murders, burglary, and missing money: but one case is unique as she rescues a man who called a crisis center hotline.Miss McCone has a love life of sorts, which is kept in the background. Her home is described as a cottage in a constant state of repair, but not much other information is given. The cases are set either in San Francisco, or within commuting distance driving her used MG.

Overall, the stories are well written and have some very original plots. The length of the stories varies. They could be read in any order, but it is better to read them in the same order that they appear in the collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fifteen great Sharon McCone short stories.
Found this in the local library and am enjoying it immensely.I had only read one or two of the stores in it.The last one (File Closed)had never been published before this book. All take place before Sharon left All Souls Cooperative ... Read more

Product Description
For all those seeking the perfect marriage between spirit and matter, ANGELICA YOGA, Introduction is an exceptional book. It offers a new vision of yoga that corresponds to Western lifestyle. Based on developing receptivity in action, the practice of Angelica Yoga on a daily basis allows us to develop and integrate qualities, virtues and powers in their purest state. This introductory book presents 21 basic exercises that allow us to deepen work with The Traditional Study of Angels - Angelology. Essentially, the practice of Angelica Yoga favors the opening of the world of dreams, parallel worlds and symbolic language. It is a new yoga that distinguishes itself from traditional yoga as it is generally taught in the West. This yoga is a yoga of consciousness rather than of performance. It suggests symbolic postures and movements that are simple and accessible and that transport us into the heart of Knowledge of Angels. Each exercise is practiced with a visualization and an Angelic mantra, that is, through breathing and invoking the Name of an Angel. All of these aspects are brought together to allow us to work deeply on our unconscious memories by favoring the opening of consciousness and activation of dreams. ANGELICA YOGA, Introduction is a practical manual that is easy to understand and use. Its preface by Doctor Francois Bouchard, who also teaches this very powerful yoga, is a testimony to the art of healing. Thousands of people across the world now practice Angelica Yoga. ... Product Description

Müller cells may be used in the future for novel therapeutic strategies to protect neurons against apoptosis (for example, somatic gene therapy), or to differentiate retinal neurons from Müller/stem cells. Meanwhile, a proper understanding of the gliotic responses of Müller cells in the diseased retina, and of their protective vs. detrimental effects, is essential for the development of efficient therapeutic strategies that use and stimulate the neuron-supportive/-protective - and prevent the destructive - mechanisms of gliosis.

4-0 out of 5 stars Like it. Helpful.
This book is very helpful. I only disliked 1 place, where he said that people NEEDED a guru - and a physical one, as in another human being. I wish he perhaps said it was very very helpful, to have a guide, but not absolutely necessary. So if I am stranded alone on an island or live in circumstances where I can't find a guru, or am so unique and different... Then what, it's hopeless? Of course it's not. Life is the best guru, as long as you really sincerely have a with to grow - you are covered! Of course he specifies that the inner Guru is essential. There was just this 1 place in the beginning that almost made me put the book down. Ignore that place, if you think like me, and carry on - you will find many good wisdom spots that will keep giving you insight long after you finish the book.

It's not insanely mind-blowing, but it's very helpful in a earthy gentle way that you appreciate over time. But I have yet to find a book I can call "insanely mind-blowing", lol. Jonothan Livingston Seagull did something like that to me, though.

Good luck!

3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing extraordinary
The words of wisdom coming from a great Self-realized yogi are always welcome and so is this book. The book is written in the question and answer format. The questions cover very wide topics relevant for a day to daylife. There are also many stories told by Swamiji which are entertainingbut there is nothing new in them to one who has elementary knowledge ofEastern philosophy. These stories can be found in many other books withsome small differences in detail. The crux of the matter seems to beself-improvement rather than trying to improve the world. This has beentold so repeatedly that during the latter part of the book I knew what theanswer could be to the question asked. This book is not written by SwamiHimself but the answers have been compiled by someone else. Anyone who hasno idea about Eastern philosophy may enjoy this book immensely but who isalready conversant with its nature will not find anything new in it. Asagainst this anyone will enjoy the earlier book ' Play of Consciousness.'

5-0 out of 5 stars Spiritual Liberation is Attainable
Is it possible to attain spiritual liberation in this lifetime? The author, a great yogic master who brings the ancient wisdom of India to the West, answers with an emphatic yes!He himself has done so, and in thisbook he enthusiastically shares his vast knowledge of the path toliberation with serious seekers in lively answer and question sessions. What I learned is that the search for spiritual liberation is notnecessarily a haphazard activity leading invariably to dead ends.Instead, the author shows that there is a carefully laid out path, with clearlymarked road signs and a detailed roadmap.I am convinced of the truth ofhis teachings because my daily meditations have already improved greatly. I also recommend his three earlier works that are written in the sameformat, entitled "Conversations with Swami Muktananda - the EarlyYears" , "From the Finite to the Infinite", and "Whereare You Going". ... Product Description
The First Bible of the Church describes of the shape of the Jewish Bible at the time of the New Testament, with a special focus on the significance of the Greek translation, the Septuagint. The Jewish defence of the Septuagint version and its reception into the early Church makes it a representative of the Jewish Bible tradition fully on a par with the Hebrew Bible. This fact is especially important because the Septuagint is extensively used in the New Testament writings, whereby it-and not the Hebrew Bible (the Masoretic text)-is the most obvious candidate for the title of the first Bible of the Church. ...
