5-0 out of 5 stars Cubism, Futurism and Constructivism, contains color photographs of the the paintings and an enthusiastic essay on this art
This book describes the genesis of Cubism, Futurism and Constructivism. The author presents the history of these isms in a way that is very readable. He presents not only the history of this art but also asides about how the artists felt about each other and emphasizes that Futurism was a reaction against Cubism and Constructivism a reaction against Futurism. These artists were not just reacting against the academic art of the time known as Academicism. However, the fact that they were united in their opposition to Academic Art, is shown by the artists themselves who would refer to their predecessors, when angry with them, as academicists. I feel that the author did a good job in describing the ideas behind each period of art. For example he shows some of the ideas the artists had, such as the Futurist emphasis on movement; "Nude Descending a Staircase" by Duchamp, which is pictured, in color, is a very good example of this preoccupation. The author gives glimpses into the artist's struggle to realize their ambitions as laid out in their frequently written manifestos. I found this to be the most interesting aspect of the book; as an aspiring artist myself, their alternate frustrations and eventual success rang a bell with me and gave me hope for my own work. If you happen to see this book at a used book store I recommend picking it up, you will not regret it. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Title and content doesn't match
Bought this book based on a quick look at a book store.
I get the feeling that the company "Fair and Isaac" has sponsored this book. The first half is a praise of the authors and their company.
There are a numerous examples of Walmart, best buy and such companies, very little details, most of the text it on such an overview level that it definitely doesn't give any value. Basically, the book explains that these companies are successful because they use the information they gather through loyalty programs and selling info.

I was expecting more details, insight or break downs on what the analysis have given. The "power of analytics" in the title, led me to think that the author will discuss how they have done the analysis to come to a decision.
Writing exactly the same examples about different companies doesn't really give much. So the book covers most obvious things. Unfortunately, the book lacks insight of how the analysis were made, the results of the analysis, the decisions or the insight that the analysis provided. The book doesn't contain much of value when it comes to the decisions that were made and how these were made.

Definitely not worth the money nor your time for reading it

3-0 out of 5 stars Where's the beef?
This is a great book if you have a need to sell executive leadership on the usefulness of extracting additional value out of organizational data.

I bought this book with great anticipation as I have been on the search for books that describe how to leverage data analytics within business...I kept waiting for the punchline. There were many references as to how decision analytics can drive efficiency gains and revenue, yet no noticeable mention of how to go about doing it.It read like a subtle sales pitch as to why you should hire Fair Issac to help you get there. There was barely enough technical jargon included to even go start researching descriptive and predictive analytics models. I found myself going to wikipedia and reading about this subject, then going back to the book, waiting..In protest, I refused to read the last 5 pages.

There's value in the book for those business leaders that have absolutely no knowledge of the topic, which is why I gave it 3 stars. Just don't go thinking that it provides any insight as to how to start extracting that value.

4-0 out of 5 stars Become data driven: Analytics for productivity.
Rosenberger and Nash have put together a concise, well written and relatively easy to follow book to explain exactly how using analytics will enhance your business decisions. Practical methods are given with examples to demonstrate how to apply the theory. The Deciding Factor is for any manager, leader, entrepreneur, and IT professional.

The authors use several high-profile companies to put together case studies demonstrating the value of analytics or how the absence of analytics caused poor decisions to be made. They point out that there are several societal trends which require us to change our business models.

* An Increasingly Cashless Economy enables Tracking of More Customer Data
* Multiple Companies Sharing Data About Customers they have in Common
* New Technologies being developed to Enable the Use of Unstructured Data
* Obtaining Data from Social Networking sites
* Companies from emerging Markets Competing for their Share of Consumer spending

Companies who are responding to the changing trends are rapidly revising how they make decisions and are automating much of the process. Industries that seem to be ahead in this move to improve are: Retail Banking, Credit Cards, Health care, Insurance, Telecom. Many companies will find they have to update their IT infrastructure as well as manage the change in decision making with their employees.

The authors use Fair Isaac's Decision Methodology to demonstrate how a fully integrated IT assisted might evolve. The method is a "circular, continuous improvement process" which might be thought of as seven stages - Stage 1) Set Decision Strategy: Identify, assess, and link business objectives to decision improvements. Stage 2) Identify Decision Yield: Determine critical decisions and potential decision yield. Stage 3) Design Decision Architecture: Design the architecture for your decision environment. Stage 4) Build Data Environment: Develop and/or integrate the data environment required to inform decisions. Stage 5) Build Mathematical Models: Develop and implement mathematical models to improve decisions. Stage 6) Build Operational Environment: Develop, implement, and modify the operational environment to enable decision execution. Stage 7) Continually Improve Decisions: Operate, monitor and improve the decision environment. (Back to Stage 1, closing the circle).

Each of these stages is then explained in detail. For example, in Stage 1), the key questions for the organization to ask about the Decision Strategy are outlined: What are the Possibilities? What are the important opportunities in alignment with company strategy or problems to be solved? What are the most important decisions related to these opportunities? How should opportunities be pursued based on priorities?

I believe the case is made that the continuing productivity improvements from our IT investments will come from using Analytics to help make rational, data driven decisions to better serve customers and clients. The Deciding Factor provides a clear understanding and methodology to move your company to the next level of productivity. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description

Richard Beau Nash was the original "It boy," the self-invented, style-over-substance ruling impresario of Bath who came from humble beginnings. He is a living illustration of what can be achieved with self-confidence and self-possession, as he became the ever-present match maker, gambler, and businessman at the whirl of balls and games at Bath in the 18th century. John Eglin’s brilliant and rewarding book is concerned as much with Nash’s invention of himself as it is with the invention of Bath. He looks in rich and fascinating detail at the amusement culture of the city, the rapid physical expansion of the spa in the first part of the century, at developers, architects, and landlords, at the role which religion and medicine played in that expansion, and at Bath’s successful adaptation to rapid change. Wide-ranging, stylishly written, and peopled by remarkable characters, this book gives a wonderful insight into how people of the 18nth century lived and let their wigs down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
An authentic and well written experience of eighteenth century Bath. An absolute treasure to own. A triumph.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent work of scholarship
Eglin's book is an excellent addition to eighteenth-century scholarship, especially on the ever fascinating topic of Bath. He sets the record straight on a number of issues regarding Nash, whose self-manufactured celebrity has helped to obscure the historical record. Previous biographers have relied on dubious sources--namely, earlier biographers--who have frequently simply rehashed old anecdotes and stories without proper scholarly attention. Eglin corrects this trend by delving deep into archival material such as collections of letters and period newspapers. Although written with rigorous scholarship, Eglin's style is not studded with difficult jargon or stuffed with ten-cent words. A fun read for the armchair historian as well as a valuable addition to period scholarship, Eglin's work presents true value for money--if a university press had published this work it would be twice the cost. This book is well worth the purchase. ... Read more

Product Description
This second edition of Compact Numerical Methods for Computers presents reliable yet compact algorithms for computational problems. As in the previous edition, the author considers specific mathematical problems of wide applicability, develops approaches to a solution and the consequent algorithm, and provides the program steps. He emphasizes useful applicable methods from various scientific research fields, ranging from mathematical physics to commodity production modeling. While the ubiquitous personal computer is the particular focus, the methods have been implemented on computers as small as a programmable pocket calculator and as large as a highly parallel supercomputer.

New to the Second Edition

  • Presents program steps as Turbo Pascal code
  • Includes more algorithmic examples
  • Contains an extended bibliography

The accompanying software (available by coupon at no charge) includes not only the algorithm source codes, but also driver programs, example data, and several utility codes to help in the software engineering of end-user programs. The codes are designed for rapid implementation and reliable use in a wide variety of computing environments. Scientists, statisticians, engineers, and economists who prepare/modify programs for use in their work will find this resource invaluable. Moreover, since little previous training in numerical analysis is required, the book can also be used as a supplementary text for courses on numerical methods and mathematical software.
