A Flash on the Contemporary Poetic Horizon
I read three or four books of poetry a week.It is a serious habit.Recently, I was invited to read poetry at a Jazz Brunch.In search of "food" poetry, I stumbled across this thin volume.I cannot over-recommend it.The poems achieve their effect through simplicity of language -- both in Spanish and in English -- and an almost naively simple device: political outrage stated through what are presented as recipes.I deeply admire most World Poetry because, unlike popular or academic American poetry, it is fundamentally political and manages to still be truly great.This is one of the most breathtaking examples I've read in a long time.Consider: 100 pages, 30 of them introductory material, the rest, facing-page translations.And I was still bowled over.

Nicomedes Santa Cruz (1925-1992) is the most significant writer in the field of Afro-Peruvian literature. This is the first book to study his entire poetical output in the socio-historical and political context of Peruvian culture in general and Afro-Peruvian culture in particular. It comprises four chapters analysing his work of compiling and writing of décimas, his collections of markedly political poems in the 60s and 70s and his revalidation of the African contribution. The book concludes by analysing satire, humour and irony, the principal literary techniques used in his poetry.This study shows that Nicomedes Santa Cruz had a leading role in the salvaging and restoration of the African legacy in Peru; he questioned the concept of 'Peruvian-ness' officially offered as it excluded the impact of this African legacy on Peruvian culture. Amazing
I found this book after a stay in the Ecuadorian Amazon, I find it, to risk sounding redundant, absolutely amazing. It has filled my heart with wonder and awe. It screams YES! this is it! It's words contain the mystical air of the indigenous peoples and the darkness of their past and nightfall under the canopy. Within can be found the inexplicable intricacies in the Amazon between man and nature. However, to quote the great healer Ino Moxo, "The miracle is in the eyes that see, not what is seen" and you must read it yourself to discover these things ... Read more
