Product Description
Florence Nightingale is considered the founder of modern nursing. What is not widely known is that she also had well-developed ideas about the spiritual aspects of nursing care. Her views draw from both eastern and western spiritual traditions and have a startling relevance to today's nursing practice.Janet Macrae, both a Nightingale scholar and a nationally recognized expert on therapeutic touch, outlines Nightingale's ideas on spirituality in this book and discusses how a variety of techniques can be used to implement a more spiritual and humane form of nursing care. The techniques can be used by both nurses and patients and include yoga, meditation, and relaxation exercises ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not about nursing
This book was a disappointment as I had hoped it would shed light on the nursing
profession that might encourage a student nurse. The book is about a woman's
life who happens to be a nurse. Not especially enlightening about the nursing profession, but much more of the personal life of a woman who happens to be a
nurse. There is a lot of drinking and adventure seeking that does not enhance
understanding of what it is like to be a nurse.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not great
This book is rather deceiving. It is supposed to be a book about nursing, but mostly it is about the exploits of the author living in small towns and drinking a lot then about nursing at all.If I wanted to read a book about shenanigans of small town alcoholics, I'm sure I can find one that is better written and with better jokes.I wasn't looking for a serious book about the challenges that healthcare faces, but was at least expecting some insight and stories about the life of a nurse. The writing style is choppy, she skips around from point to point in her life and the only way you know that the time period has shifted is by the age of one of her sons or what husband she is on.Also, the author's nursing experience is not as diverse as she seems to think, nor is her life at all unique. In two years of nursing experience, I have better stories then hers, but I wouldn't sit down and write a book about it.The author also seems to fit every sterotype the public has of nurses; heavy drinkers, bad at school, multiple husbands, catty, can't get along with other women, etc.I guess this is the danger that you face with Kindle books, you don't have as much opportunity to browse them as you would one in a bookstore.Look on nursing discussion boards or blogs before this book if you want to hear any good nursing stories.

1-0 out of 5 stars Outdated, Poorly Told
Nothing original here and the stories are from the 70's - the jokes are lame too. Sorry I greatly admire nuurses but there is very little "reality" shared here, it is basically a story then some jokes then another story.I get that it is intended to be funny but sometimes what comes through is prejudice and judgement toward the patients that I find offensive. And yes I have worked in nursing homes so I can relate to the feelings. However, in these days of medical reform, I jut didn't find much to learn, laugh about or relate to in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, informative book
I purchased this book for my daughter, who is in nursing school, for Christmas last year.Florence was such a fascinating individual.I had a difficult time getting it wrapped as I kept wanting to "read just one more chapter"!

5-0 out of 5 stars I hope every nurse reads this
I was inspired to become a nurse by stories of the "lady with the lamp" but it took more than 30 years before I found this book and learned just why Florence Nightingale deserved to be my inspiration. The pictures alone are worth the price of this book, and the story too is well told.

5-0 out of 5 stars Profound and inspiring
Dr. Barbara Dossey, founder of the American Holistic Nursing Association, has written an inspiring and insightful biography of Florence Nightingale that has much to teach us about being bold, tough minded, task oriented, creative, passionate andcompassionate.Nightingale conscientiously developed the strongly focused conceptual, organizational and networking skills that contributed to her formidable accomplishments in the fields of nursing, housing, sanitation and statistics and did it all despite chronic illness, criticism, sexism and other major life challenges. Most of all, we learn that Nightingale was a visionary and mystic, whose life story challenges all of us to know, accept and realize our God-given purpose in this world.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Most Inspiring Book
I knew of Florence Nightingale's nursing activities before reading this book but had no idea of the extent of her self-discipline, dedication and accomplishments. She was a systems analyst, administrator, networker and mystic who devoted her life to doing God's work. She was also a prolific writer of books, lay reports, pamphlets and thousands of letters. The author provides a wealth of background material describing the historic times and placesassociated with Florence Nightingale. One of the things I appreciated about this book were the many maps and photographs appropriately placed near the text about the person or places.

5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding biography
This is unquestionably the best biography of Nightingale ever written. The author reminds us that Nightingale was one of the first statisticians -- one of the first members of the statistical society in the U.K. and for many years the only woman member.Nightingale collected and published voluminous statistics about health care (she proved that the rate of childbirth fever was lower among women cared for by midwives vs those cared for by physicians and surmised correctly that the difference was that the midwives washed their hands and established hygiene in the birth chamber. The physicians came to the birth room covered with blood from dissections.) The germ theory of disease had not been developed -- but she was able to reduce the death rate in the hospitals in Crimea by ensuring cleanliness, safe water and good food for the patients.) She was also a suffragist and one of the first signers of a petition in support of suffrage put forward by her
friends, the philosopher John Stuart Mill and his wife Harriet Taylor, who were prominent proponents of women's suffrage. Mill asked Nightingale to dedicate herself to the cause of female suffrage and she replied that there were others as qualified as she; she was needed to reform the British military, hospital and medical systems. Nightingale shook up the British military, hospital and medical establishments. She had many enemies because of her work -- and they became even more virulent when she was proved right. Unfortunately their calumnies persist to this day. While doing the work which first brought her to public attention she contracted Crimean Fever -- a common complaint of those who served in the Crimea War.Dossey points out that recent research indicates that Crimean Fever was probably brucellosis which was and is epidemic and endemic in the Crimea. (It occurs now, too, in the U.S. among persons who work with infected cattle.) Nightingale was a very devout Christian. At 17 she sought a direction for her life. She came to feel that she was called to serve the sick and took a vow of chastity when she was 17.Barbara Dossey is an R.N. with a Master's degree in nursing. She has written texts on intensive care nursing and on wholistic health. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing -- which signfies the high respect of her research peers for her work. This is the finest contribution she has made and that says a lot. ... "Nightingale" Notes on Nursing What it is What it is Not" is a classic by Florence Nightingale, the first "modern" nurse. Nightingale's methods were revolutionary in her time, and they form the basis for the techniques of patient management that have been taught ever since. "Nightingale" Notes on Nursing What it is What it is Not" is a great overview, in her own words, of Florence Nightingale'sideas on care, cleanliness, and the nursing process in general. Her directives are widely applicable today. Anyone interested in the healthcare process, nursing, or notable women in history would do well to read "Nightingale" Notes on Nursing What it is What it is Not." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nightingale: Notes on Nursing
I recommend this book. Nightingale was the first woman nurse who was really well known, and she did a lot of good things to help others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nightingale: Notes on Nursing
This is a great book on Nursing, I bought it for my sister who is a nurse, and although I have not read it, let's just say she enjoyed it thoroughly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nightinggale: Notes on Nursing
"Notes on Nursing" by Florence Nightingale is nursing classic that was first published in 1859 to give to other nurses, especially beginners just starting out. Nightingale herself said that the book was not meant to be a comprehensive guide to Nursing but rather a set of guidelines to follow when taking care of others.

Joan Quixley wrote that "Notes on Nursing astonishes one with its relevance to modern attitudes and skills in nursing, whether this be practiced at home by the 'ordinary woman', in hospital or in the community."

Despite being dated, the guidelines taught in this book are just as relevant today. Nurses still need to be compassionate and sensitive in their care.

There were many different things discussed in Notes on Nursing including excess noise, health in houses, ventilation, warming, bedding, light, cleanliness, babbling, and how to observe the sick.

I strongly recommend "Notes on Nursing" for anybody who has to take care of an older person. There are many needs that are easy to overlook, and this book goes over the basics of nursing quite well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A unique and highly recommended biography
Florence Nightingale: The Making Of A Radical Theologian by theologist and biographer Val Webb is a fascinating study of the little-known yet fiery and passionate religious beliefs held and shared by the world-famous nursing and hospital reformer, feminist, and social activist. In the Victorian times when Nightingale lived, the inequalities of the stratified British "class" society worried her, and she came to espouse a vigorous liberation theology and followed a deeply spiritual and intimately personal quest for Truth. Amazingly informative, meticulously researched and openly candid, Florence Nightingale: The Making Of A Radical Theologian is a unique and highly recommended biography of an influential and devout historical figure. ... Product Description
This biography was published in 1931.

From the book's acknowledgement:

This book could not have been written without
constant reference to, and some quotation from, the
letters and papers published in Sir Edward Cook's
excellent two-volume biography of Florence Nightin-
gale. (Macmillan & Co., Ltd., 1913.)I am deeply
indebted to Messrs. Macmillan for their kind permis-
sion to make these references and quotations.

I should add that since the publication of my book
in America and while the proofs of this English edition
were in the press, Miss L B. O'Malley's biography of
Florence Nightingale, written with the assistance of
members of the Nightingale family, has been published.
Miss O'Malley's book (which does not go beyond the
Crimean War) contains much interesting and hitherto
unknown detail but, after reading it with great enjoy-
ment, I do not find that I need alter anything that I
have written here.Indeed, the new official biography
strengthens my previous impressions and, in particular,
emphasizes what a very real struggle it was, at the
outset, for Florence Nightingale to free herself from
dependence upon ordinary human longings such as to
please and be loved by her family and her friends.

.............................................................................

Excerpt from the book:

Florence Nightingale was a deeply religious woman.
Doing what she did, when she did it, she could not
have been otherwise.Without a sense of the direction
and support of the highest authority — God — she could
never have brought herself to insist on becoming a
nurse (an occupation in those days carried on by
unskilled and in some cases quite disreputable per-
sons), thereby shocking all the proprieties of people
of her own class and standing in society. She was
born and bred in a time when self-assertion, if it urged
action in unwomanly spheres, had very little chance
of being listened to, even by the woman in whom
it was ramping, unless by its vehemence it could
contrive to make her believe that it was acting under
Heavenly orders. The more powerful the ego — the
more successful, of course, were these subconscious
tactics. Florence Nightingale's religion was as strong
as her personality.
...............................................................................

The world was only just beginning to have a con-
ception of its social responsibilities. There was no
tradition of a civil conscience as distinct from a
religious one.Charity had always ministered to poverty
and wretchedness, but Charity had not been connected
with any ideal of social progress.People were chari-
table because it was good for their souls to be so;
not because they regarded the welfare of the poor
and needy as an end in itself.
...............................................................................

The old style of hospital had been built with little
regard to drainage, ventilation or proper space for
the beds.Equipment, furniture and utensils were
hopelessly unsanitary and there were recognized
"hospital" diseases, "hospital" gangrene, "hospital"
fever, etc., which were looked upon as inseparable
from hospitals and made going into these institutions
a risky business, and one to be avoided if possible.
Improvement was beginning to make way and
Florence was by no means the only pioneer in institu-
tion hygiene. But her book with its insistence on
health principles, now taken for granted, but then
regarded by many people as revolutionary, had far-
reaching influence because of its author's Crimean
reputation, and she was consulted about hospital
plans and appointments by a number of progressive
individuals and local authorities all over the country.

Product Description

The world knows Florence Nightingale as "the lady with the lamp"-the revered founder of nursing as a respectable profession for women. But few people are aware that Nightingale's career began only after years of struggle to free herself from her suffocating Victorian family. In this surprisingly passionate feminist essay (a "brilliant polemic," states Martha Vicinus), Nightingale denounces the lives of idleness she and other women of her class were forced to lead.

This writing is excellent and a highly recommended one for new nurses or any nurse who has not read Nightingale's writings.Came in excellent condition and soon after it was ordered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nightingale's Cassandra Deserves To Be Heard
If you are interested in Victorian gender roles especially, but also nursing history or the Crimean War, Nightingale's Cassandra is a nice text to own.Be aware that it is not a fancy publication, but it is worth the price. It's a slim stapled paperback volume at 64 pages: pp. 1-23 is an interesting intro by Myra Stark, p. 24 is a short chronology of Nightingale's life, pp. 25-55 is the actual essay, and pp. 56-8 is a poem Epilogue by Cynthia Macdonald.

Cassandra is an interesting primary source that gets inside the head of an amazing and overlooked woman. Most people have heard of her as the nurse from a war, but not as many know how outspoken, intelligent, and independent she was.It also gets inside the heads of Victorian women who thought like Nightingale on Victorian gender roles. She is very quotable; I just turned to a random page and came across, "Marriage is the only chance (and it is but a chance) offered to women for escape from this death; and how eagerly and ignorantly it is embraced!" (38).

(Not terribly important, but I purchased this text used and my copy is a bright orange-red rather than blue.I wasn't sure what it was when I opened the package!) ... Read more

Florence Nightingale is the cornerstone of modern medicine and hospital care. She is one of the greatest heroes in the history of the world, and yet, when her name is mentioned it seems to be used in a somewhat disparaging way as to refer to someone who idealistically wants to martyr herself to save the world. Too bad. She was no martyr. She was tough and forceful and got things done by doing, not by sacrificing. ... Read more

Product Description
Florence Nightingale remains an inspiration to nurses around the world for her pioneering work treating wounded British soldiers during the Crimean War; authorship of Notes on Nursing, the foundational text for nursing practice; establishing the worlds first nursing school; and advocacy for the hygienic treatment of patients and sanitary design of hospitals. In Notes on Nightingale, nursing historians and scholars offer their valuable reflections on Nightingale and analysis of her role in the profession a century after her death on 13 August 1910 and 150 years since the Nightingale School of Nursing (now the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery at Kings College, London) opened its doors to probationers at St Thomas Hospital. There is a great deal of controversy about Nightingaleopinions about her life and work range from blind worship to blanket denunciation. The question of Nightingale and her place in nursing history and in contemporary nursing discourse is a topic of continuing interest for nursing students, teachers, and professional associations. This book offers new scholarship on Nightingales work in the Crimea and the British colonies and her connection to the emerging science of statistics, as well as valuable reevaluations of her evolving legacy and the surrounding myths, symbolism, and misconceptions. ...
