1-0 out of 5 stars a really poor attempt
poorly written.i'm talking about the author's use of English; extremely confusing. and that's before we even get to the jargon.

1-0 out of 5 stars A very ordinary effort
This book does not take you through quantum computing in any logical way.The author does not explain where he is going with his lengthy examples in each section. Instead he tends to launch into hard to follow, artificially concocted examples with little rationale and then move to the next topic without a conclusion or a reason for why he put the reader through such boring experience. The discussion of the Bohr - Einstein debate told me nothing of what the debate was about and there are many references to the EPR without any real explanation of what was in it. There must be a better way to understand this subject else I will have to conclude that Einstein was right and God really does play dice. Give this book a miss... it is simply not worth the effort. Even my one star is generous.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very confusing
Mathematics was invented for a reason, and the avoidance of even simple mathematics makes this book near unintelligible. Further, the habit of versing quantum theory in terms of genetics, real and imagined, further separates the subject mater from the reader; and giving Feynman credit for how probability amplitudes add would probably not please him at all. Give this one a wide berth and read instead 'The quest for the quantum computer' by Julian Brown which is everything this book is not.

1-0 out of 5 stars skip it
One of the most glib and inaccessible treatments of the subject I've encountered. You're much better off with something like Julian Brown's "Minds, Machines, and the Multiverse" or Feynman's own lectures on computation.

2-0 out of 5 stars Some good material badly written, with a lot of junk
This book is clearly written by a physics professor who doesn't spend much time talking to people who haven't studied physics.I would guess his editor falls into this category as well. The back cover praises its accessibility, a marketing gimmick as obviously deceptive as the sensationalistic chapter names. For example, one chapter, "Teleportation for Gamblers" is named after an obscure quantum phenomenon that has been dubbed teleportation for no apparent reason, has nothing to do with gambling, and is only referred to in passing.

The first four chapters try to give an overview of quantum mechanics to those who haven't studied physics.Even after spending 4 years earning a Bachelor's in Physics, I was only barely able to follow the discussion. If I did not already understand the principles he was explaining, I would never have been able to fill in the holes of explanation.

But my biggest complaint about this section is that he bases the entire discussion on calculating probabilities in a quantum environment. But in trying to avoid complex math, he leaves out essential details. The much more intuitive explanation of superposition of states (whereby an object is in two places or states at the same time) he barely mentions in this section. If the material was presented in this way, all the math would be unnecessary, and the interesting second part of the book would make much more sense.

Beyond that, the book contains numerous factual mistakes. His Turing machine for multiplying on page 99 just doesn't work.On page 109, he says that if you have N objects, and for each object you need to store N pieces of information that have a total of N^N pieces of information. The correct answer, N^2, makes his point much less dramatic.

The last two chapters are interesting indeed. They discuss what is possible with a quantum computer, and the state of research in 1998.I recommend that if you do buy this book, only read the last two chapters. If you can't follow it, look anywhere else for an explanation. The first four chapters will not help. ... "Perseus" is one of four Greek Hero retellings from Geraldine McCaughrean, with cover illustrations by Jason Cockcroft. Geraldine McCaughrean is one of the most highly acclaimed living children's writers, and is particularly renowned for her masterly retellings of traditional tales. 4-0 out of 5 stars "I Won't Forbid the Old Sea-Shaker His Revenge..."
This, the forth and final book in Geraldine McCaughrean's stories of Greek heroes, (preceded by Perseus, Hercules (Heroes) and Theseus (Heroes)) is the only one based on actual literature: Homer's Odyssey. As such, McCaughrean does not have to pick and choose aspects of convoluted and often contradictory myths; her source material has already been written, providing a fairly linear sequence of events. As such, the stories concerning Odysseus have always been more straightforward than those of his peers.

The retelling begins well after the Trojan War, with Odysseus sailing home with his fleet of ships to his small kingdom of Ithaca, where his wife Penelope and son Telemachus await him. He has not seen them in ten long years, and the voyage home is a dangerous one. Meawhile, interspersed with Odysseus's journey there are "updates" as to what is happening in Ithaca with his wife and child: Penelope has been bombarded with unwelcome suitors who fight for her hand in marriage, leading mother and son to make secrets plans of their own to keep them at bay.

McCaughrean keeps the most famous encounters of Odysseus's adventure (those that even those who have little knowledge of Greek myth are probably familiar with) such as the blinding of Polyphemus the Cyclops, the enchantress Circe turning men into swine, the twin terrors of Scylla and Charybdis. Along with these are slightly less-known experiences, such as his sojourn into the Underworld to speak with the blind seer Tiresias, hospitality in the household of the god of the winds, and the blissful stupor of the Lotus Eaters. All of this is more or less a condescened version of Homer's original text, but there is an amusing variation on the nymph Calypso who holds Odysseus "captive" on her paradiscal island. Turns out that living the life of luxury with an adoring female isn't quite as appealing as it sounds...

McCaughrean even manages to sneak in minor episodes, such as the unheroic death of Elpenor (poor guy fell off a roof) and Odysseus's actions to secure his peaceful rest in the Underworld. Come to think of it, its amazing just what is packed into a relatively slender book. The pace is rapid (getting slightly sluggish during the Scylla/Charybdis episode) and told in clear but beautiful prose; see here, a description of Circe's island:

"Beyond the herb garden were olive groves and orchards of lemons, apples and limes. Vines entwined the marble colonnades, and hives shimmered with the early morning movement of bees. Tall, dark cypresses swayed like dancers, and the soft green of pine forests was sprinkled with asphodels and orchids."

Odysseus himself closely resembles Homer's portrayal of the man: a typical "hero" as the Greeks would have considered one. By contemporary standards he is undoubtedly egocentric as well, yet (as with all her retellings) McCaughrean uses this to her advantage by illustrating the human foibles of such heroes. In any case, Odyssey's renowed cunning is at the forefront of his personality, what with his plan to avoid the Cyclops and the secret infiltration of his own house at the book's conclusion - he is even given several moments of self-inspiration that were originally passed onto him from the gods; such as chewing the moli flower to avert Circe's spells.

Customs such as the emphasis on hospitality and various death rites are interwoven into the story's flow (their importance clear without the need to stop and explain them) as is Odysseus's opposing feelings of both wanderlust and weariness. Like all the retellings (collected together in an omnibus edition: Greek Heroes), this series can serve as either an introduction to or a deeper look at the heroes of antiquity. "Odysseus" is perhaps not as memorable as her other retellings, simply because it is a straightforward adaptation of with little in the way of personal innovation, but still, this is a comprehensive, researched, well-told version of what is arguably one of the most famous stories of Ancient Greece.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a fantastic book for your shelf
Odysseus: A Retelling of the Odyssey Cricket books 2005 148 pp 8.50$

As one wave arrived, another was always drawing back again out to sea, out to the open sea that is always traveling, always traveling. Page 148

The Odyssey is the second part to Homer's classical Iliad and Odyssey. Ithaca's honorable king, Odysseus has started his voyage home from the ten-year siege of Troy. Everything goes wrong when a storm carries his fleet off course into a flood of dangers and enemies. Problems plague Odysseus and his men, from giants to mutiny, the most dangerous of which is the wrath of the sun and sea gods.Worse still, suitors are swarming into Ithaca to seek the hand of Odysseus' lovely queen, Penelope. Will Odysseus make it home in time or will he be replaced as Ithaca's king?
Odysseus loves his family, Penelope his wife and his son Telemachus and The Odyssey describes his ten year voyage to get home to them. Odysseus left home when Telemachus was only a baby but Telemachus knows a tremendous amount about his father from heroic tales and descriptions from his mother. Penelope is the radiant queen of Ithaca. She misses Odysseus more every passing moment. Despite constant propaganda by her suitors Penelope continues to believe that her husband is still drawing breath.
I think that the story of the Odyssey is one of the most incredible pieces of literature in history. Odysseus is the second version of the Odyssey I have read. I enjoyed that it was more detailed in some areas than the first version I read, however, I felt that some parts of the story could have been more descriptive. For example, when Ido the sea nymph rescues Odysseus, Geraldine McCaughrean more fully describes why the nymph rescues Odysseus, which makes the story more interesting. At another point, when Odysseus tricks Circe into transforming his men from pigs back into men, I thought the author could have provided much more detail to this very intriguing part of the story. The book focuses on ethics and courtesy and more so the lack there of. Examples of the lack of courtesy include the Cyclops eating Odysseus' men and also when Circe transformed Odysseus' men into pigs. The giants and the Cyclops are incredibly despicable with a blatant disregard for any common courtesy. The kings in this story, however, are much more kind and helpful. One king gives Odysseus the bag of winds, a magical bag containing the wind currants of the world; the other king gives him a ship and protection from the furious Poseidon. With this help Odysseus finally returns home.
This is a fantastic book that is perfect for fans of adventure and fantasy between the ages of nine and fourteen that are looking for a quick read. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys mythology.

Product Description

This controversial book challenges the accepted theories on the genetic mechanism of evolution. The story these three biologists have to tell may very well upset the whole field of biology. The traditional view of evolution—which grew out of the work of Gregor Mendel and Charles Darwin and is strongly supported by present-day scientists like Richard Dawkins and Stephen Jay Gould—assumes we are at the mercy of our genes, which we inherit largely unchanged from our parents, except for rare random mutations which accumulated and lead to change over evolutionary time. Those genes are coded in the chromosomes of the sperm and egg cells of the parents, and so only changes to those two types of cell have any chance of being passed down to the parents'’ offspring. Any changes, accidents, or surgery to the rest of the parent’s bodies are not transmitted to the newborn. The theory of inheritance of acquired characteristics—if you build up your muscles your kids will be born with a propensity toward great strength—on the other hand, favored by Jean Lamarck in the nineteenth-century, was brought down by nineteenth-century science. But now, as this challenging and thrilling book shows, it looks as though, at least for certain structures in the body’s immune system, Lamarck may have been right after all.Based on their own ground-breaking work over the past two decades, as well as that of other molecular biologists, Steele, Lindley, and Blanden argue that for one adaptive body system there is strong molecular genetic evidence that aspects of acquired immunities developed by parents in their own lifetime can be passed on to their offspring. Certain to stimulate lively debate, Lamarck’s Signature gives new life and scientific credibility to the Lamarckian heresy—the notion of the inheritance of acquired characteristics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid foundation, shaky building
The first 162 pages of this book are great. Steele could spin them off into a short textbook. The explanations of antibody diversity, gene rearrangement and hypermutation are really very good. The rest is a little hard to believe, and where the immune system is concerned doesn't even make sense. Adaptability and variability, not hard-coding, are key to the immune response, so it seems that what he proposes--that learned responses could be passed back into germ-line DNA--wouldn't even be benficial if it were to turn out to be true considering the rate at which most pathogens mutate. But, let the experts address that question. For an overview of antibody production, this is done well.

4-0 out of 5 stars yet another surprise from nature
A book requiring remarckable courage in the orthodox scientific climate of today, given that Darwinian evolution is generally accepted and most viewscontrary are considered virtual heresy. The possibility of the passing onof acquired characteristics from a parent to an offspring was firstproposed by Lamarck some 200 years ago. This new book suggests fromexperimental evidence gathered over decades that it is possible for immunefunctions to be passed from parent to offspring this prceeds viaretroviruses being able to infect sex cells such as sperm and ovum.Certainly not an unreasonable possibility and given the strong evidenceshown in the book not to be passed over lightly. Although the technicaldetails of the biochemistry involved are at times heavy going the authorsattempt to alleviate this through a useful glossary and explanations whennecessary. Not easy to follow but worth the effort. The book certainly askssome major questions of accepted dogma.

Once again this book highlightsthat just when the accepted authorities are fixed and comfortable in theirdomain along comes something to surprise them and everyone, nature justcan't stop being creative and interesting can it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Daring and instructive
A book based on new scientific knowledge, not vague old ideas. The authors put forward precise statements and hypotheses about inheritance of acquired immunity. I find it very instructive for its vulgarization of moleculargenetics and of the functioning of the immune system, which is not easy tofind elsewhere. I also like its openness and its boldness, which willcertainly be attractive for all inquisitive minds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting new biology
While the hard science which constitues the heart of this book may not be easy going for most readers, the payoff is worth it.Dr. Steele's "unorthodox" ideas have been met with some hostility since the1970s.The evidence for a Lamarckian mechanism at work in the immunesystem now seems very convincing, contradicting one of the main dogmas ofDarwinian biology. This book presents the experimental evidence to date asto how adaptive immune responses may be incorporated into the DNA of theorganism, thus making them heritable material. If the retrogene mechanismis at work in the immune system what other roles might it be playing inevolution? A huge question for our current understanding of evolution. ... Read more

Teenager by day, mythological hero by night. It all happens in aflash. PJ Allen, a typical, modern-day 17-year-old, is thrust into anadventure beyond his wildest imagination when he is summoned by Zeus, king of the gods, to recreate a lost moment in time that threatens towipe out humanity.

Fraught with giants and dragons, witches and beasts, "The Hero Perseus" chronicles PJ’s fantastic quest through the ancient world to obtain the helmet of invisibility, winged shoes, and leather bag necessary to defeat the most dangerous of foes - the deadly gorgon Medusa. And just when it seems the battle is over, PJ must contend with an even larger conflict – a rematch of the war between the Titans and Olympians.

Of course, these battles pale in comparison to the conflict being waged on the homefront between two fiery blondes who occupy far too many of PJ’s thoughts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Hero Perseus: Mad Myth Mystery Series
Percy John Allen (PJ), a seventeen year old high school student, has just moved to Athenia with his mother Dana. PJ and Dana had left New Jersey to build a new life for themselves after the tragic death of PJ's firefighter father, Zack. Though completely homesick, PJ is attempting to make the best of the situation. He even starts making some new friends.

Just as PJ's life is starting to look a little brighter, something strange happens. A man calling himself Hermes (messenger of the Gods) suddenly appears in PJ's dreams. Hermes tells PJ that the boy is actually the descendent of Perseus, a heroic character in Greek mythology. Moreover, Hermes demands that PJ travel back in time to slay Medusa, a gorgon so deadly that one glimpse of her would turn PJ into stone. How is PJ suppose to juggle traveling back in time to slay some gorgon while hanging out with his friends, studying for tests, playing football, and figuring out a way to impress Jana Langley?

The Hero Perseus: A Mad Myth Mystery is a new twist on an old story that will be enjoyed by all aged. This story will be equally enjoyed by those who have no knowledge of Greek myths and those who know these stories by heart. As with the original Greek myths of Perseus, there is a lot of action and adventure. However, this updated version adds a great deal of humour into the mix. Moreover, the characters are shown as just average people caught up in extraordinary situations. In this way, readers of this book will not only gain understanding of Greek mythology but also come to the realization that ordinary people can be heroes too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reviewed by Amy Ryder
When his parents divorce, PJ and his mom move to the tiny country town of Athenia.PJ finds an old art set in his room, and he draws a roly-poly old man who comes to life as Hermes. He convinces PJ (actually Percy, or Perseus) to help him behead Medusa and save civilization from a drought.PJ becomes much too close to people in his past and present who are actually characters from Greek myth as he accompanies Hermes on wild adventures based on the mythical Greek stories.

Thefast-paced action and element of mystery in these books would appeal to the modern adventure fantasy reader. They do teach as well as entertain, since they are based in mythology. The main character is a fantastic athlete, and each book also contains great sports action sequences.

The myths are woven naturally into the story, but at times they were hard to follow, with many characters and situations thrown at the reader simultaneously. For the young adult unfamiliar with Greek myth, this series would be overwhelming at first. The second book in the series has a smoother flow between the myth and the story. Some of the characters are cliché, like the tomboy neighbor with a secret crush on PJ, the "big man on campus" who is jealous of PJ's new popularity, and the crazy roommate who eats cold pizza and calls everyone "dude."Overall, these are satisfying reads that will appeal to readers who enjoy fast-paced fantasy and action stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
This is perhaps one of the most outstanding young adult books that I have reviewed in a very long time.
Concerned by the recent popularity of works teaching our children about witchcraft and wizardry; the authors set out to write a work that would show young people that they could overcome problems wihout the use of magic. That is exactly what they did in a way that will make young and old stand up and cheer.

PJ Allen has a lot to deal with in his young life.He has lost his father, has been moved to a new town and is thrust into a quest to save the world.
This work is packed full of adventure, suspense and even humor as PJ meets new friends, fights unbelievable enemies and travels on a journey to discover the life of his ancestor Perseus and the realization of what his destiny is.
Young and old alike will be drawn into this story and enjoy reading a work that combines Greek mythology with a modern day background.
This is a great read and I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book I've read
This book, The Hero Perseus was the best book I have read. The librarian brought it to my class to see who wanted to read it and I took it and I read it in only 4 days. That is how great it was. If your kids are into witches and mythology like I am they'll love this book. The ending will surprise you but of course i can't spoil it for you. You're just going to have to read it yourself. Just remember best book I've ever read that I've gotten from school.

"Could there be a business intelligence -- a set of abilities that dismantle those truly outstanding in the world of commerce? Could business intelligence be the mark of outstanding individual performers, as well as the building block of the best-performing companies?"
--From the Introduction by Daniel Goleman

Business: The Ultimate Resource offers unique access to the expertise and ideas that will drive global commerce and the art of management in the twenty-first century. Unmatched in scope and depth, and guided by a team of eminent advisors and editors, Business will become the "operating system" for any organization or anyone in business -- the infrastructure that drives ideas and action. Business illuminates the state of the art in business thinking and practice today, and will serve as the essential guide for seasoned executives, up-and-coming managers, entrepreneurs, consultants, administrators, educators, and students alike.

Much more than a reference, Business provides fascinating perspectives on the culture of business, which is arguably becoming the most potent force in society around the globe. The centerpiece of Business is a collection of over 150 original essays and thought pieces, commissioned especially for this volume from among the world's most dynamic business authors. From Warren Bennis on the four critical aspects of leadership to Charles Handy on the future of business to Peter Bernstein on the case against the long run, readers will learn what's on the minds of today's thought leaders. Business also includes colorful, and often surprising, biographies of the pioneers who have left their indelible marks on the business landscape: from the larger-than-life "robber barons," such as financier J.P. Morgan and oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller, to today's high-tech and media titans, Bill Gates and Martha Stewart; from the groundbreaking research of W. Edwards Deming on quality and Abraham Maslow on psychological needs to today's high-profile strategy gurus, Gary Hamel and Rosabeth Moss Kanter.

Every page of Business is filled with information, inspiration, and application. For example, the management library section illuminates the most influential business books of all time, including Sun Tzu's timeless The Art of War, Alfred P. Sloan's My Years with General Motors, and James Champy and Michael Hammer's controversial bestseller, Reengineering the Corporation. Over 300 checklists, covering every aspect of management, offer a wealth of practical guidance for anyone who works: essential strategies for tackling virtually every challenge, from managing stress on the job to reading a balance sheet to making the most out of performance appraisals. With detailed industry overviews, an extensive dictionary of business terms, and a world-class almanac of facts and figures, Business has something for everyone.

Let the collective wisdom of generations of trailblazers be your guide to achieving business literacy -- a working knowledge of the key thinking, writing, people, and trends that define business today -- and ultimately the business intelligence to thrive in a world of complexity and possibility. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book Just For Looking Things Up
There is no other book like Business: The Ultimate Resource.Daniel Goleman did an incredible amount of work to put this together. It's physically by far the biggest book I own.The business resources accumulated in this book are beyond belief unless you see it for yourself.

This is not a book to read like most books. It's just too big for one.The index alone is enormous. This is a reference book, and it just seems that everything in the category of business, a large category indeed, is there. All the names of major thinker, doers and authors are referenced.Lists of all manner for everything from human resources management to accounts payable are provided.

Considering the price used, this is a great purchase providing you have space for it.It will not fit in a lot of places where one normally puts books.Nothing else has so much information on the subject either.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful world of business!
This book may be immense in size and weight, but it is all worth it! It is all you'll ever need to help with entreprenuership, leadership, general business matters, marketing, sales, strategy, etc, etc. It is a one-stop shop for all u need 2 know! I has the readings and articles that matter most and make impact because the writers are validated, reliable and proven. The book is categorized and sorted in different user friendly ways that puts busy to rest. Informative, thoroughly effective...hope they make a CD ROM version so that we can put efficiency into its reviews. Apart from its cumbersome composition, it does look great on a bookshelf and is smaller that what maybe 10 books would accomplish. BUY IT, KEEP IT, LOVE IT...a BUSINESS person must HAVE.

3-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete Geography

1-0 out of 5 stars Unless You Can Program Yourself: STAY AWAY
Kreutzer's review was very helpful. unfortunately, I bought the stupid cd anyway. it's worthless. I only bought it for the quick morphological analysis. the software displays SGreek, but it won't use it for morphological analysis (yes, I was using the proper accents - I noticed the chicago and german mirror PP sites were fussy about that as well). why is this a problem for me? well...because I don't know the keystrokes for Athenian, the default font. it's not a complete loss. I can still cut 'n' paste Greek words from any text that is in the collection, and the morphological analysis tool works properly then. but $160 is a heck of a lot of money to waste on such user-unfriendly software. I'm using the "platform independent" version. I'm sure there's a map for that stupid Athenian font somewhere. I just have to find the stupid thing and hope it works w/o the programming tricks Kreutzer mentions (that're beyond my computing skills).

5-0 out of 5 stars Multimedia as serious reserch tool
Perseus is represents a major innovation in how to access information about the classical world. A collaborative effort developed by specialists who have taken pains to present vast stores of information usually only available in major museums or research libraries is now are accessible to any enterprising novice student. The heart of the Comprehensive Edition is the huge picture archive especially of sculpture and illustrated pottery that makes close study of visual and textual sources. The Concise Edition provides the full textual and interactive resources but only provides thumbnails of the picture library this can inhibit serious study of the visual record. This work is an indispensable tool for any serious study of Classic Greek culture and history. The variety of approaches to linking the content makes Perseus an effective interactive teaching tool. And research resource that exhibits the fuller potential of multimedia. ... Read more
